There is no single best weapon type in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. The practical choice depends on the situation: Greatsword controls crowds, Longsword is the safest all-purpose pick, Cestus and Dual Swords convert close-range openings into fast damage, Spear/Lance and Whip keep enemies at distance, and Sword and Shield protects against frontal attacks.
Guides describe seven weapon families, with four weapons in each family, but the available evidence does not establish a complete frame-tested ranking for the final release. Treat the comparisons below as role-based guidance rather than a definitive damage-per-second leaderboard.
How many weapon types are in Belmont’s Curse?
Two 2026 guides, from AllThingsHow and GamesRadar+, describe seven weapon families with four weapons per family, for 28 weapons in total. The useful distinction is not simply a higher or lower stat line. Each family changes how you approach enemies through its reach, attack commitment, hit coverage, defensive options, or special effects.

That distinction matters because the published material does not provide a complete official roster with frame data, tested hitboxes, or final-release balance notes. A weapon that appears slower can still outperform a faster one when its arc catches several enemies, when its effect adds damage, or when its range lets you attack without trading hits.

What each weapon family is designed to do
Longsword: the dependable all-rounder
Longsword is the balanced starting option. It offers medium reach, moderate handling, and no major weakness in ordinary exploration. Its notable damage behavior is tied to movement: a slide or backdash can trigger extra damage, and its dash-through finisher lets you pass an enemy while attacking.
That movement link makes Longsword a good teaching weapon. You can attack normally when space is limited, then use a slide or backdash when an enemy commits to a swing. The benefit is not a permanently higher damage number; it is the ability to turn defensive movement into an offensive opportunity. Valmanway, a named longsword, adds delayed wind damage, so its value includes damage that arrives after the initial strike.
Greatsword: the crowd-control specialist
Greatsword trades speed for impact and coverage. Its broad swings can hit several targets, and its spinning grapple attack covers a full 360-degree area. That makes it the most natural choice when enemies surround you or when a large hitbox allows one swing to connect repeatedly.
The cost is commitment. The swings are slow, and the charge-oriented handling requires you to anticipate enemy movement rather than react at the last instant. The AllThingsHow comparison says charging grants hyper armor, allowing the attack to continue through certain incoming pressure. Use that property to start a charge before a crowd reaches you, not as permission to ignore every attack: the guide material does not establish universal invulnerability or frame-tested interruption rules.
Cestus: fast strings that must stay connected
Cestus is the close-range damage-ramping family. Its punches come out quickly, but the short reach means you must remain beside the target. The uppercut can launch an enemy, and the launching grapple gives the moveset vertical utility as well as damage.

Belmont’s Curse Atlas reports charge multipliers of 1× at one charge point, 1.2× at four points, and 2× at nine points. Those are guide-reported in-game values, not independent laboratory measurements. They describe why Cestus rewards a sustained combo: the payoff grows as charge accumulates, while disengaging or missing can cost the positioning needed to maintain that pressure.
Choose Cestus when you are comfortable reading attack patterns at close range. It can outperform a safer weapon during a long opening, but its short reach gives you less room to recover from a missed string.

Dual Swords emphasize fast, high-damage strings at short to medium range. The comparison guide recommends them for boss damage windows, where the objective is to land as many attacks as possible before the boss becomes dangerous again.
Because the family is built around speed rather than broad defensive coverage, it is less forgiving when an opening closes early. Start the string only when the boss is committed to a recoverable animation, then stop repositioning as soon as the window ends. The available sources support the burst-damage role, but they do not provide frame-tested startup, recovery, or exact per-hit values for every Dual Sword.
Sword and Shield: frontal defense first
Sword and Shield is the defensive option. Its attacks remain close range, and the weapon tier affects its damage, but its defining feature is the ability to hold attack and guard incoming frontal strikes.

This family suits rooms in which threats approach from one direction or a boss repeatedly uses a readable frontal attack. Guarding is directional: the guide describes protection against frontal strikes, not all-around immunity. Enemies attacking from behind, above, or an uncovered angle still require movement or a change in facing.
Spear and Lance: reach, pokes, and thrown attacks
Spear/Lance provides long reach and a safer way to test an enemy’s space. Its attacks commit more slowly than quick close-range strings, but the distance lets you deal poke damage without standing directly on top of a target.
The defining input is the throw: hold to aim, then release to launch the weapon. That gives the family a second range band instead of only a long thrust. Named spear effects can add pursuit or piercing behavior, according to the guide material, so the exact weapon within the family can change how reliably a thrown attack follows or penetrates targets.
Spear is the better choice when you want measured, repeatable contact rather than a sustained melee combo. Keep enough distance to see the enemy’s response; throwing removes the weapon from the immediate attack pattern, so do not assume every release is safe simply because it starts at range.
Whip: maximum spacing and precision at the tip
Whip has the longest room-scale reach among the listed families and can be aimed diagonally. Its damage is not uniform along the attack: hitting with the tip deals more damage, so spacing is part of the weapon’s execution requirement.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The grapple helps maintain that spacing, letting you reposition rather than retreat in a straight line. The TechRadar review described the whip as a go-to because distance was rewarded with better damage output, with spear as a close second. That observation is consistent with the guide-supported tip-hit behavior, but it is not a controlled damage benchmark.
Vampire Killer, a named whip, adds burning tip hits and fiery explosions when it kills an enemy. Those effects can change the value of attacking a group: a precise tip hit may both damage the target and create a secondary threat-clearing effect. The evidence does not establish the explosion’s exact radius or damage, so treat the effect as a qualitative advantage rather than a fixed area-of-effect number.
Which weapon type is best for each situation?
For crowds and wide hitboxes: Greatsword
Pick Greatsword when several enemies overlap or when a boss presents a large body that can be struck by a broad arc. Its wide swing and spinning grapple cover more space than the short-range families. The trade-off is a slow wind-up, so begin charging before the group closes and avoid relying on it for last-second reactions.
For general exploration: Longsword
Longsword is the strongest default when you do not know what the next room contains. Its balanced reach and handling work against ordinary targets, while slide and backdash bonuses give movement a damage purpose. It does not demand the tight spacing of Cestus, the directional discipline of Whip, or the charge timing of Greatsword.

Dual Swords are the simpler burst choice: enter during a clear opening, deliver a fast string, and leave. Cestus can produce stronger sustained pressure when its charge is built, but it asks you to remain close and preserve the combo. Use Dual Swords if the opening is brief or unpredictable; use Cestus when the boss is locked into a longer, readable pattern.

For safe ranged play: Whip or Spear/Lance
Whip is best when you can maintain exact spacing and consistently reach the tip. Spear/Lance is more deliberate: poke from distance, then use the aimed throw when a target moves outside thrust range. Choose Whip for diagonal access and grapple-assisted repositioning; choose Spear/Lance when a straight-line throw or piercing/pursuit effect is more useful.
For frontal defense: Sword and Shield
Use Sword and Shield when blocking a predictable frontal attack is more valuable than maximizing damage. Hold attack to guard the front, keep your facing aligned with the threat, and move when attacks come from another angle. Its defensive identity is more important than any generic damage ranking.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret damage, range, and speed claims
“Highest DPS” is not an established answer for this game. Belmont’s Curse Atlas explicitly says its listed DPS is the game’s display value, not a measured damage-per-second result. The available guides provide qualitative behavior and selected displayed values, but not a complete, independently frame-tested table covering every weapon in the final release.
That limitation changes how to compare families:
- Read damage together with hit coverage. A broad Greatsword swing may connect with multiple enemies even if its single-target cycle is slow.
- Read range together with accuracy. Whip’s tip bonus is valuable only when the tip actually reaches the target; Spear/Lance’s long thrust still requires a correct line.
- Read speed together with commitment. Dual Swords and Cestus attack quickly, but Cestus loses its advantage if short range prevents a sustained combo.
- Read effects as part of damage. Valmanway’s delayed wind, Vampire Killer’s burn and kill explosion, and named spear pursuit or piercing can matter more than a displayed base number.
Until official data or controlled in-game testing establishes startup, recovery, hitbox size, and final balance values, exact rankings should be treated as provisional.
A practical selection method
- Identify the room’s main threat. Several small targets favor coverage; one target with a predictable opening favors burst or sustained close-range damage.
- Choose your safe distance. If you want to stay outside melee range, start with Whip or Spear/Lance. If you can stand beside the target, Cestus or Dual Swords becomes viable.
- Check the attack commitment. Select Greatsword only when you can anticipate the enemy long enough to charge. Select Longsword when you need a medium-commitment answer.
- Account for direction. Sword and Shield protects the front, Whip rewards a precise tip line, and Spear/Lance throws follow an aimed trajectory.
- Value the effect you will actually trigger. A delayed wind strike, burn, explosion, pursuit effect, or piercing effect is useful only if your spacing and target selection let it activate consistently.
- Reassess by encounter, not by a universal tier list. The guides support role-based recommendations, not one ranking that remains correct for every room and boss.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Calling Greatsword the strongest because it has heavy hits. Heavy damage does not remove its slow wind-up. Use its arc and grapple against groups, and switch tactics when enemies punish long commitments.
- Using Cestus outside its intended distance. Its charge multipliers matter only while you can keep the combo connected. Close the gap deliberately instead of chasing a target with missed punches.
- Standing at the wrong Whip distance. The family rewards tip hits, so attacking from too close can give up the weapon’s principal damage advantage.
- Assuming a guard covers every direction. Sword and Shield’s described guard is frontal. Turn toward the threat and move against attacks that bypass the front.
- Treating displayed DPS as a laboratory result. Use the number as an in-game reference, not proof that one family wins every encounter.
- Ignoring named-weapon effects. Valmanway, Vampire Killer, and special spear effects can change practical performance even when their base category looks similar to another weapon.
Bottom line: choose a role, not a universal winner
Greatsword is the crowd-control choice; Longsword is the reliable explorer; Cestus and Dual Swords are close-range damage tools with different commitment demands; Spear/Lance and Whip provide reach; and Sword and Shield is built around frontal defense. The best weapon type is the one whose range, timing, and effect match the encounter you are about to play.
