Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse takes place in Paris in 1499, twenty-three years after Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. Rose Belmont, Trevor Belmont’s daughter and the next playable hero of the Belmont family, fights through a city consumed by monsters and into Dracula’s castle. The outbreak is only the visible part of the story: Rose is pulled into a hidden conspiracy while learning to use the Vampire Killer, other weapons and boss-derived Arcana powers.
Where Belmont’s Curse fits in the Castlevania timeline
The clearest chronology anchor is the year 1499. Konami’s product material places Belmont’s Curse twenty-three years after Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. The preceding game is commonly dated to 1476, so the practical reading order is Castlevania III first and Belmont’s Curse second.

Konami’s introduction opens with Paris engulfed in flames as monstrous creatures emerge from the shadows. The attack is sudden and widespread, turning an ordinary city into the first battlefield. Trevor, the hero who defeated Dracula, goes into the burning streets with his daughter Rose. They carry the legendary Vampire Killer and head toward the source of the danger: the looming castle associated with Dracula.

The immediate objective is therefore straightforward—defeat the creatures and save the people of Paris from eternal darkness. The narrative quickly adds a second layer. Rose discovers that the outbreak is connected to a dark conspiracy beneath the visible disaster. The castle is not merely a final location to clear; it is the central threat and the place where the larger mystery comes into focus.
Rose Belmont and Trevor’s legacy
Rose is Trevor’s daughter
Rose Belmont is explicitly identified as Trevor Belmont’s daughter. That relationship explains why the Vampire Killer is in her hands and why her growth is the story’s central concern. She is not a stranger recruited for one isolated mission. She begins as the next member of a family whose name is already associated with defeating Dracula.
Rose is the new playable Belmont hero
The PlayStation Blog describes Rose as Trevor Belmont’s successor. In practical terms, that means the adventure follows Rose’s abilities and decisions rather than giving Trevor another starring campaign. Trevor’s presence matters as the preceding hero and as Rose’s family connection, but the game’s arc belongs to Rose as she explores, fights and uncovers the conspiracy.

Growth is part of the premise
Konami describes the game as a 2D action-exploration title depicting Rose’s growth. Her development is represented through the weapons, relics and skills she acquires, as well as through the Arcana system created from defeated bosses. The story and progression are linked: every major confrontation can expand what Rose is capable of doing in the world.
What happens during the known story
1. Paris is overwhelmed
The opening crisis is a monster invasion in 1499 Paris. Streets are burning, creatures are appearing from hidden places, and civilians face the prospect of eternal darkness. This establishes the human stakes before Rose reaches the castle. Her mission is not simply to retrieve an object or settle a family dispute; it begins as an attempt to save a city.
2. Rose enters the fight with the Vampire Killer
Rose and Trevor take the family’s holy whip into the streets. The weapon is both a practical tool for fighting monsters and a symbol of continuity with the Belmont tradition. Rose’s use of it shows that she has inherited the family’s responsibility, while the game’s additional weapons and skills give her a fighting style that is not limited to repeating Trevor’s exact adventure.

3. Exploration leads from Paris to Dracula’s castle
The campaign covers the burning streets of Paris and Dracula’s castle. Exploration is a core part of the structure: the official descriptions call out secret chambers and hidden items alongside combat. That means progress depends on more than moving from one boss arena to the next. Players are expected to search for routes, rooms and resources while the threat expands around them.

The monsters are the visible symptom, not the whole explanation. Rose becomes involved in a dark conspiracy underlying the attack. The available official summaries establish that mystery as a major story thread, but they do not publish a complete scene-by-scene chronology. It is accurate to say that Rose investigates a hidden plot connected to the castle; it is not accurate to claim a specific culprit, final betrayal or twist without a spoiler-complete primary source or direct playthrough verification.
Bosses, tarot cards and Arcana
Boss encounters have a story function as well as a combat function. Konami names Death, Medusa, Carmilla and Joan of Arc among Rose’s opponents. When Rose defeats bosses, they are sealed into tarot cards. Those cards become Arcana, which let her cast spells and perform special actions.

The tarot-card idea gives the adventure a distinct identity. Rose does not merely collect an abstract experience-point upgrade after each victory. A defeated boss is represented as an Arcana card, and that card can be used for spells or special actions. The system therefore ties the plot’s supernatural opponents directly to the tools Rose uses to advance.

The Vampire Killer is the Belmont family’s legendary holy whip. In Belmont’s Curse, it performs three jobs at once:
- Primary weapon: It is Rose’s central answer to the creatures overrunning Paris and the castle.
- Family inheritance: Carrying it connects Rose to Trevor and to the Belmont victories that came before her.
- Story marker: Its presence confirms that Rose’s mission is a full Belmont campaign, not a side story detached from the family chronology.
The official descriptions also mention additional weapons, relics and skills. Those tools broaden Rose’s options while preserving the Vampire Killer as the defining symbol of her role. Secret chambers and hidden items make the equipment meaningful beyond boss fights: searching thoroughly can affect how prepared Rose is for later challenges.

Is Belmont’s Curse connected to Castlevania III?
Yes. The connection is direct and chronological. Belmont’s Curse is set twenty-three years after Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, and Rose is Trevor’s daughter. The new game follows the next generation of the same Belmont line rather than revisiting the earlier game’s plot.
For a first-time reader, the useful context from Castlevania III is Trevor’s status as the Dracula-slaying hero. You do not need a full scene-by-scene recap to understand the 1499 premise: Trevor’s past victory explains why Rose inherits the Vampire Killer and why her succession carries weight. The newer story then shifts attention to Rose, Paris and the conspiracy surrounding the monster attack.
What is confirmed—and what remains unknown
Official launch and product pages establish the setting, the twenty-three-year interval, Rose’s identity, Trevor’s involvement, the Paris outbreak, Dracula’s castle, the conspiracy, the Vampire Killer, exploration features and the boss-to-Arcana system. They also identify Death, Medusa, Carmilla and Joan of Arc as bosses.
Those pages do not publish the complete ending, the final twist or every event in chronological order. Consequently, a responsible spoiler-free explanation should stop at the point where Rose investigates the conspiracy and confronts the castle’s threat. Any article or video claiming to reveal the definitive finale needs to rely on a spoiler-complete primary source or verified direct gameplay, not on the introductory material alone.
A spoiler-safe reading order
- Start with Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. Treat it as the Trevor-era foundation and the commonly used 1476 entry in the chronology.
- Move to Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. The story jumps to Paris in 1499, twenty-three years later.
- Track Rose’s inheritance. Note how the Vampire Killer, Trevor’s legacy and Rose’s status as successor shape the opening conflict.
- Follow the exploration thread. Paris and Dracula’s castle contain secret chambers and hidden items, so the setting is part of the investigation.
- Read boss victories as progression. Death, Medusa, Carmilla and Joan of Arc are not only obstacles; their tarot-card Arcana expand Rose’s available spells and special actions.
This order preserves the timeline while keeping the unresolved conspiracy intact. It also explains why the game feels like a new chapter: the history begins with Trevor, but the playable and narrative focus belongs to Rose.
