Belmont’s Curse uses four different secret-opening mechanics: visually or audibly hidden passages, walls that collapse under a normal attack, doors opened by concealed levers, and floors or objects destroyed with Rose’s Smash ability. A reliable sweep therefore combines observation, attack-testing, careful listening, ability checks, and map notes rather than treating every secret as a cracked wall. The checklist below separates those mechanics, records every documented district total, and clearly labels the community estimate instead of presenting it as an official completion requirement.
The four ways a secret can open
Before marking a room complete, identify which opening rule applies. Confusing these rules is the main reason a seemingly empty room remains unresolved.
Hidden passages
Some secret areas have no obvious break point. The in-game tutorial tells you: “Some secret areas are hidden behind walls. Look out for the visual and audio clues.” In practice, inspect wall sections that look slightly inconsistent with their surroundings, especially at dead ends, behind furniture-like scenery, or along an alcove that appears just too shallow. Stand against the boundary and move along it while listening for the game’s secret-area audio cue. A hidden passage does not require a special attack; finding the correct boundary is the unlock condition.
Breakable walls
These walls respond to Rose’s ordinary attack. Swing repeatedly at cracked or otherwise suspicious masonry until the surface collapses. Do not reserve attacks only for obvious cracks: a section can differ subtly in texture, alignment, or sound. The barrel-room wall in Paris Streets and the cracked block on the Roof of the Tower are documented examples of this category. Record the room and landmark immediately after opening it, because a later return to a visually similar wall can otherwise be mistaken for the same find.

Lever doors
A lever secret has no wall to destroy. Search around dead ends, isolated platforms, and the back side of architectural features for a concealed lever. Activate it with INTERACT: E on PC or R1 on PlayStation, according to the guide controls. If a door remains closed after you have attacked nearby walls, stop testing attacks and inspect the surrounding room for the switch instead. A lever may be positioned away from the door it controls, so note both the lever room and the opened destination in your checklist.
Smash floors and blocks
Golden cracks identify destructible objects for Rose’s Smash skill. While Rose is airborne, press Down + Jump to drive her into the floor or object. The tutorial describes the move this way: “Pressing Down + Jump while Rose is in the air will now send her crashing to the ground. The impact can break destructible objects, recognisable by their golden cracks, and can also damage enemies.”
Thicker targets require more height. The Heavy Stomp tutorial explains: “The Stomp has several power levels that activate depending on the distance travelled during the fall. If Rose jumps high enough, she can break thicker destructible objects!” A normal Smash can therefore fail against a thick floor without the target being a bug. Gain a higher launch point, make a longer fall, and repeat the Down + Jump input over the golden-crack surface.

AllThingsHow’s 2026 community documentation counts 257 Secret Areas: 172 hidden passages, 59 breakable walls, 20 lever gates, and six Smash floors. It classifies 126 areas as containing a pickup and 131 as containing nothing. These figures are a working checklist target assembled by players, not a completion specification published by Konami. Maps can be revised as rooms are reclassified or newly documented, so use the count to find omissions rather than to dispute an in-game completion state.

No authoritative coordinate list for all 257 areas is established here. For that reason, the practical record should identify each room by district and landmark, state the opening type, and describe the clue you used. An entry that says only “wall near the stairs” is difficult to verify after a long break; “Catacombs of Paris — Chamber of Whispers — breakable wall — faint crack on west side — Wise Heart Fragment” is actionable.
Build a checklist that survives backtracking
Use one row per secret
Capture these fields for every discovery or unresolved lead:
- District: the named area on the map.
- Room or landmark: a chamber name, tower level, gallery, corridor, or other stable description.
- Opening type: hidden passage, breakable wall, lever gate, or Smash floor/block.
- Visual or audio clue: crack, inconsistent texture, golden fissure, lever shape, sound cue, or “no visible clue.”
- Required ability: normal attack, INTERACT, Smash, Heavy Stomp height, or a later progression item.
- Reward: item, clue, stat increase, or “none observed.”
- Status: open, empty, or unavailable until a gate, Smash skill, or progression item is obtained.
Mark blocked entries instead of forgetting them
When a wall, floor, or door is clearly gated by an ability you do not have, leave the row in place and mark it unavailable. Add the required ability and the nearest map landmark. This prevents repeated blind searches and makes a later backtrack deliberate. A blank row suggests an unexamined room; a blocked row explains why the room is not complete.
Use Gloomstone and map markers
The Gloomstone relic gives a hint when Rose is close to a secret. Once available, use its proximity information to narrow the search, then test the four opening types in a logical order. The map supports markers for secrets and unreachable locations, with up to 50 markers active at once. Reserve markers for discoveries you cannot yet open, not for every ordinary doorway, so the cap remains useful during a long route.

Recommended sweep order
- Enter the room and inspect dead ends, alcoves, cracked masonry, and golden-crack surfaces.
- Listen while tracing suspicious wall boundaries; hidden passages can lack a visible break.
- Attack inconsistent wall sections with Rose’s normal attack.
- Search for a lever and activate it with INTERACT (E on PC, R1 on PlayStation).
- Test golden-crack floors or blocks with Down + Jump while airborne; increase fall height for thick targets.
- Write the room, opening type, ability, and reward immediately, including “empty” when no pickup is present.
- Mark any ability-gated lead on the map and return only after the required progression is available.
District-by-district targets
The table uses the community’s district breakdown. “Not stated” means the available documentation does not establish a value; it is not evidence that the district has zero of that secret type.

High-value breakable-wall and block entries
Paris Streets: Upper Tower and the barrel room
When sweeping Paris Streets, put the Upper Tower DEF UP book on its own row rather than recording it as a generic wall item. The barrel-room wall is useful as a recognition reference: a wall that appears ordinary can still collapse under repeated normal attacks. If your attack test produces no result, check adjacent panels for the actual inconsistent section before concluding that the room is empty.
Roof of the Tower: cracked block recognition
The Roof of the Tower example demonstrates why “cracked” and “golden-cracked” must remain separate checklist terms. A regular cracked block belongs to the normal-attack category; a golden-crack target belongs to Smash. Recording the color and the required move prevents an unnecessary ability backtrack.

Catacombs of Paris: named rewards behind walls
Use the Chamber of Whispers Wise Heart Fragment and the Charnel Galleries “Death Mark” clue as anchor entries when checking the Catacombs. Their named rewards make it easier to confirm that the correct wall opened. A wall that collapses into an empty chamber should still be recorded, because empty secrets count toward the community’s target.

Notre-Dame and Hall of Mirrors: thick-target technique
Notre-Dame’s East Gallery Eldritch Talisman is associated with a golden-crack Smash floor. The Sealed Scriptorium melody clue is a stricter test: its thick Smash floor needs a high fall. Hall of Mirrors has one thick Smash floor as well. If Down + Jump triggers but the surface remains intact, increase the distance Rose travels before impact rather than abandoning the clue.
How to tell an empty secret from an unfinished search
An empty area is a confirmed secret room with no pickup, not a room that has merely resisted one attempt. Use this decision sequence:
- If a wall has a crack or unusual seam, attack every adjacent panel with the normal attack.
- If the surface has golden cracks, switch to airborne Down + Jump and test both ordinary and high-fall Smash distances.
- If there is no break point, trace the wall boundary while listening for the hidden-passage cue.
- If the room contains a suspicious dead end but no opening, search for a lever and use INTERACT.
- If the clue is near a locked route or missing ability, record it as unavailable and place a map marker.
Only after these checks should the status become empty. Write what was tested, not just the conclusion; that note lets you distinguish a genuinely rewardless secret from a mechanic you misidentified.
A compact notebook format
Paper, a spreadsheet, or a notes app all work if every row uses the same vocabulary. This plain-text layout is sufficient:

A route that minimizes wasted returns
Early exploration
On the first pass through a district, open ordinary breakable walls and levers that are reachable. Record every golden-crack target even if Smash is not yet available. Do not spend time repeatedly attacking a golden-crack floor; its visual language already identifies the correct mechanic.
Ability-gated cleanup
After obtaining Smash, revisit districts with documented Smash floors, prioritizing Notre-Dame, Library, and Hall of Mirrors. Use a higher fall for thick targets in Notre-Dame’s Sealed Scriptorium and the thick Hall of Mirrors floor. Keep the map markers until the room is entered and its reward or empty status is written down.

Compare your rows with the district totals, then investigate only the deficit. If your count is short, start with districts that have a high number of breakable walls—Catacombs of Paris has 15, Notre-Dame has nine, and Paris Streets has eight—before rechecking hidden passages. Treat any mismatch as a lead: the community totals can change with map revisions, and the Master’s Quarters split specifically requires verification against the current map.
Why written notes are practical, not excessive
GamesRadar reviewer Serena Cherry described encountering “so many cryptic clues, so many patterns to remember, so many intriguing characters or key items hidden away” that she resorted to writing notes, and observed that finding bosses can be harder than fighting them. A structured checklist addresses exactly that memory burden. It preserves the clue, room, required ability, and reward in one place, so a later route is based on evidence from your own run rather than a vague recollection that “there was something behind a wall.”
Completion standard to use
For a practical 100-percent-style sweep, aim to account for every row in your district checklist, including entries marked empty, and resolve every unavailable marker after the relevant ability is obtained. Use the community’s 257-area breakdown as a comparison target, not as an official Konami certification. If a later map revision changes a district total, update the affected rows and preserve the room-level evidence that led you there.
