Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse does not have separate Easy, Normal, and Hard buttons. Its default challenge is adjusted through an optional Custom Mode in Settings. Open Settings → Gameplay from the main menu, or pause the game and choose System → Settings → Gameplay, then change only the modifier that addresses your problem. Boss-door respawns and extra potions reduce repetition, damage and experience modifiers change progression, and Prevent Death removes the normal failure condition. Custom Mode also warns that some achievements become unobtainable, so keep an unmodified save if achievements matter to you.
How difficulty works in Belmont’s Curse
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, released on Steam on 14 October 2026, uses a granular assist system rather than a conventional difficulty selector. You begin with the game’s intended challenge and can opt into individual gameplay modifiers. This design lets you solve one specific obstacle—such as a long run back to a boss or a shortage of healing—without automatically changing every combat value.
The approach reflects the developers’ stated goals. Director Yukiko Hokao said, “We didn’t want it to be a simple or easy game. That isn’t Castlevania.” Producer Tsutomu Taniguchi also noted that players who struggle with a battle have “numerous alternatives,” including the series’ level-up system. Creative director Emmanuel Nouaille described the gameplay as deliberately “fair.” Custom Mode is therefore an assist menu, not a hidden replacement for a missing Easy mode.

- From the title screen, open Settings. You can also enter the game’s pause menu.
- When paused, select System, then Settings.
- Open the Gameplay tab. The settings menu also contains Controls, Accessibility, Video, Audio, and Language tabs.
- Enable Custom Mode to reveal the gameplay modifiers.
- Adjust one setting, return to play, and test the result before changing another. This makes it clear which assist solved the problem.
Custom Mode is optional. Leaving it disabled preserves the standard rules and is the appropriate choice for a first run if you want the challenge as designed or intend to pursue achievements.

What each Custom Mode modifier changes
The modifiers affect different parts of the game. They are not equivalent, and selecting one does not automatically select the others.

Only the maximum damage-dealt and experience multipliers are reported as specific caps: five times for Damage Dealt and three times for Experience Gained. The published descriptions do not establish exact numeric ranges for potion capacity, incoming enemy damage, trap damage, or the boss-door option, so those values should be read from the in-game menu rather than assumed.
Which setting should you choose?
For a first playthrough or a series-purist run
Leave Custom Mode off. You will experience the baseline combat, level-up curve, checkpoints, and failure rules. This is also the safest configuration for achievements because the game’s warning says, “Some achievements will be unobtainable if ‘Custom Mode’ is enabled.” If you later decide the challenge is blocking progress, you can enable a targeted assist on a separate save.

For exhausting boss runbacks
Enable Allow Respawn In Front Of Boss Doors and leave the combat modifiers untouched. This is the narrowest solution when the boss itself feels fair but the walk back makes practice tedious. You still need to learn the fight and survive it; only the repeated approach is removed.
For a healing shortage
Increase Maximum Number Of Potions. Choose this when you are reaching a boss or difficult room with an empty inventory despite handling attacks reasonably well. It preserves enemy damage, attack patterns, and your own damage output, so the encounter remains recognizable while giving you more room for recovery.
For a combat execution barrier
Use either Damage Dealt or Damage Received From Enemies, not both at first. Raising your damage is useful when the fight’s length is the problem; reducing incoming damage is better when you understand the pattern but cannot avoid every hit. Start with the smallest useful change and reassess. Combining several combat boosts can make it difficult to tell whether you improved through practice or simply removed the encounter’s pressure.

For a progression barrier
Increase Experience Gained when your character is under-leveled for the next area or when normal grinding is the obstacle. Because the modifier can go as high as three times normal experience, it can shorten a deliberate leveling session without directly altering attack damage. Once your character reaches the needed level, you can decide whether to keep the setting or return to the baseline rules.

For traps and environmental hazards
Adjust Damage Received From Traps if hazards are the reason attempts end. This is distinct from enemy damage: lowering one does not lower the other. Keep enemy damage unchanged if combat is still teaching you useful timing and positioning.
For a no-failure practice run
Prevent Death is appropriate when the goal is exploration, route learning, or practicing a sequence without restarting. It is not a mild convenience setting. Because death normally creates the game’s largest consequence, preventing it changes how you evaluate risk, healing, and resource use. Treat it as a deliberate alternate ruleset rather than a routine first step.

Accessibility settings are separate from difficulty
Not every setting that makes the game more comfortable makes it easier. The Accessibility tab contains options such as screen-shake controls, character or object outlines, subtitle display, audio adjustments, vibration controls, and button remapping. These can improve visibility, reduce sensory overload, or make controls usable with different hardware and motor needs without changing enemy health or attack damage.
For example, disabling screen shake can make telegraphs easier to read, but it does not reduce the hit points of a boss. An outline can improve visual separation in a busy room, while remapping can move an essential action to a more comfortable button. Use these options freely when comfort or clarity is the barrier; do not assume that enabling them has the same achievement consequences as Custom Mode gameplay modifiers. The explicit achievement warning applies to Custom Mode, so check the current in-game notice before combining modes during an achievement attempt.

The Settings screen warns that some achievements become unobtainable when Custom Mode is enabled. The notice does not identify every affected achievement or specify whether disabling Custom Mode later restores eligibility for an existing save. Consequently, the reliable approach for achievement hunting is to keep Custom Mode disabled from the start of that run.

- Maintain a separate unmodified save for achievement attempts.
- Use a second save for experimentation with respawns, damage, potions, experience, or Prevent Death.
- Do not assume that turning a modifier off later will retroactively make an achievement obtainable.
- If an achievement matters, read the warning shown by your current game build before enabling any Custom Mode option.
A practical decision checklist
Match the symptom to the narrowest modifier instead of selecting every assist:
- “The boss is fine, but I hate the walk back.” Enable boss-door respawn.
- “I reach the fight with no healing.” Raise maximum potions.
- “I know the pattern, but one or two hits end the attempt.” Reduce enemy damage received.
- “The fight lasts so long that mistakes become inevitable.” Increase damage dealt.
- “I need levels, not different combat rules.” Increase experience gained.
- “Traps are the only thing killing me.” Reduce trap damage received.
- “I am testing routes and do not want a game-over.” Enable Prevent Death, understanding that it removes the normal failure condition.
- “The screen, audio, or controls are difficult to use.” Adjust Accessibility options rather than enemy-balance modifiers.
Change one variable at a time, play long enough to verify the result, and record which save has Custom Mode enabled. This keeps the game’s feedback useful and prevents accidental use of a restricted configuration in an achievement run.
Why there is no traditional Easy mode
The absence of Easy, Normal, and Hard labels is intentional. Belmont’s Curse expects players to use movement, attack timing, exploration, and leveling together rather than relying on a single global multiplier. Taniguchi described the level-up system as a way for newcomers and players who are less comfortable with action games to continue playing, while Hokao emphasized that the game should not become simply easy. Custom Mode extends that philosophy by letting you address a specific obstacle without flattening every encounter.
That also explains why “the easiest setup” is not one universal preset. A player troubled by runbacks needs a different change from a player who cannot see hazards, and both need something different from a player who is under-leveled. The most faithful assist is the smallest one that removes your actual blocker.
Release and edition context
Steam lists Konami as publisher and Evil Empire as developer, with a 14 October 2026 release date. The listing includes a digital sound and art gallery edition containing more than 100 pieces of artwork. Those edition details do not create additional difficulty modes; Custom Mode remains the relevant in-game method for adjusting challenge. Steam’s listing reports 82% positive English-language user reviews from 2,122 reviews as of 18 October 2026, while a GamesRadar+ review reported 23 hours played and two of three endings unlocked. Neither figure changes the settings rules, but they indicate that the game’s challenge is being discussed in the context of a substantial, replayable campaign rather than a short tutorial experience.
Bottom line
There is no Easy, Normal, or Hard selector in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. Start with Custom Mode off for the intended challenge and achievement-safe play. If a specific problem appears, target it: boss-door respawn for repetition, potions for healing pressure, damage modifiers for execution, experience for progression, trap damage for hazards, and Accessibility controls for comfort. Reserve Prevent Death for runs where removing failure is the point, and keep an unmodified save whenever achievements matter.
