Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse has no separate Easy, Normal, or Hard selector. Instead, its optional Gameplay > Custom Mode lets you change specific parts of the challenge, from boss-door respawns and potion capacity to damage, experience, and even preventing death. Motion, readability, audio, subtitle, and control options are separate accessibility settings, so you can improve comfort without necessarily reducing enemy difficulty. Enable Custom Mode carefully: the settings warning says some achievements become unobtainable while it is active.
How difficulty works in Belmont’s Curse
There is no traditional difficulty menu
The game does not offer an Easy/Normal/Hard choice when you start a save. The first-launch sequence instead asks for text and voice language, your confirm-button preference, and brightness calibration. It also offers Deactivate tutorials, which is off by default. None of those choices changes enemy strength or player damage.
Difficulty is adjusted after you open Settings and use the Gameplay tab’s optional Custom Mode. You can leave it disabled for the intended baseline balance, or enable individual modifiers that target the particular obstacle you want to remove. This makes the system more granular than a three-position difficulty selector.

These controls let you choose between preserving combat challenge and removing friction. Boss-door respawns and extra potions mainly cut repetition. Damage, experience, altered incoming damage, and Prevent Death change survival or execution more directly. You can combine only the relief you need instead of turning every assist on.

Custom Mode’s achievement trade-off
The Settings screen warns that changing the listed options affects game balance and may negatively affect the experience. It also gives a more concrete warning: some achievements become unobtainable when Custom Mode is enabled. Treat that as a save-planning decision, not a cosmetic toggle.
- If achievement completion matters, begin and continue the relevant save with Custom Mode off.
- If finishing the story, learning bosses, or reducing physical strain matters more, enable only the modifiers that solve your problem.
- Do not assume that turning on a single mild option is exempt; the warning applies to Custom Mode being enabled, not just to the most powerful modifiers.
Because the game does not document a universal achievement-safe subset, the safest approach is to regard every Custom Mode session as potentially ineligible for affected achievements. Keep a separate unmodified save if you want both a comfortable playthrough and an achievement-focused run.
How to open and change the settings
From the main menu
- Choose SETTINGS on the main menu.
- Open GAMEPLAY.
- Enable Custom Mode if you want to edit its modifiers.
- Change the individual options, then use the on-screen apply command.
During an active run
- Press Esc to open the pause interface on PC.
- Select the SYSTEM tab.
- Choose SETTINGS.
- Open the tab you need, change the setting, and apply it.
The settings interface is divided into six tabs: CONTROLS, ACCESSIBILITY, GAMEPLAY, VIDEO, AUDIO, and LANGUAGE. The documented PC keyboard shortcuts are Q and E to switch tabs, Space to apply changes, and Backspace to close. The footer also provides commands to restore the selected tab’s defaults or restore all defaults. On console, follow the button prompts shown in the interface.
You can make these changes before starting a save or while a run is in progress. There is no separate difficulty screen attached to New Game, so do not look for an Easy option in the opening setup.

Visual comfort and readability options
Screen shake and vibration
The PC Accessibility tab has a Screen shake intensity control. Its documented default is 1.0; lower it if impacts or environmental effects cause discomfort. Vibrations are documented as on by default and can be switched off. The PlayStation listing separately confirms that the game can be played without controller vibration, motion controls, touch controls, or adaptive-trigger effects.
These changes affect sensory feedback, not the underlying enemy statistics. Turning off shake or vibration therefore preserves the normal combat rules unless you also enable a Gameplay modifier.
High Readability outlines
High Readability is off by default. Enable it before editing the outline controls; the player and enemy outline rows remain unavailable until the mode is on. Once enabled, you can tune the two outline groups independently:

- Enemy outline colour, brightness, and thickness for opponents.
The documented defaults are black outlines, brightness 1.0, and thickness 0.5. Increase brightness or thickness when Rose or enemies blend into busy scenery. Colour changes can provide a stronger separation for your display or visual needs, while leaving combat damage and timing untouched.

Audio, subtitles, and dialogue control
The PC Audio tab provides separate sliders for Master, Music, Sound effects, Dialogues, and Onomatopoeia. Each is documented at a default value of 1.0. Onomatopoeia can be reduced without lowering spoken dialogue, which is useful if impact words or other sound-effect text is distracting but you still need character speech.
The PlayStation product listing also identifies individual volume controls and subtitles for the main story and main characters. If you need dialogue clarity, lower music or effects independently rather than reducing the master volume. Subtitles and dialogue controls are separate from Custom Mode and do not, by themselves, alter achievements or enemy difficulty.

The Controls tab separates controller layouts from keyboard-and-mouse layouts, so adjust the active device rather than assuming a change applies to both. The PlayStation listing includes basic controller remapping, control reminders, tutorial reminders, and offline pausing. Those features help with memory, motor access, and interruption management without modifying the game’s combat balance.

Keep the intended challenge while removing runback fatigue
Enable only Allow Respawn In Front Of Boss Doors and, if needed, a modest increase to the maximum number of potions. This approach targets repetition and resource friction while leaving damage values and enemy behavior alone. It still enables Custom Mode, so the achievement warning remains relevant.

Make practice safer without removing every decision
Lower Damage Received From Enemies and Damage Received From Traps, or raise Rose’s damage modestly. You can leave Prevent Death off so positioning and healing still matter. If progression is the main barrier, increase Experience Gained rather than stacking every combat assist.
Prioritize access over challenge preservation
For a run where dying from damage is not a workable failure condition, use Prevent Death and pair it with the visual, audio, subtitle, and control adjustments you need. This is the most substantial change to the normal survival rules, and it should be chosen with the achievement warning in mind.
Create a deliberately harder run
Custom Mode is not only an assist menu. Lower Damage Dealt, increase enemy or trap damage received, or leave healing capacity restricted to create a tougher self-imposed ruleset. Because the options are independent, you can make one aspect harder without changing everything else.

Troubleshooting common settings problems
The difficulty option is missing
That is expected. Return to SETTINGS > GAMEPLAY and look for Custom Mode; there is no Easy/Normal/Hard selector beside New Game.
Outline controls are unavailable
Turn on High Readability first. The player and enemy outline colour, brightness, and thickness controls are gated behind that switch.
A change did not stick
Use the interface’s apply command. On the documented PC layout, press Space; closing with Backspace before applying can discard the edit. If several settings are misconfigured, use the footer’s restore-selected-default or restore-all-defaults command, then reapply only the changes you need.
You want achievements after using assists
Do not assume that disabling Custom Mode later restores eligibility for achievements already affected by it. The warning is presented when Custom Mode is enabled, so keep an unmodified save for achievement attempts and use a separate save for accessibility-focused play.
Bottom line for choosing settings
Belmont’s Curse replaces preset difficulty levels with a set of individually adjustable Gameplay modifiers. Use boss-door respawns or extra potions when repetition is the problem; adjust damage or experience when execution or progression is the barrier; and choose Prevent Death only when removing the normal failure condition is necessary. Screen shake, outlines, vibration, audio, subtitles, remapping, and reminder options address comfort and access independently. The one universal caution is achievement eligibility: enabling Custom Mode can make some achievements unobtainable, regardless of which modifier you select.
