Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse makes its Vampire Killer whip both a weapon and a way to move through the world. Rose Belmont can use it to swing across spaces, reach hidden or previously inaccessible areas, and attack enemies from unexpected positions. Official descriptions also confirm multiple weapon categories, Relics, and Arcana abilities connected to defeated bosses. A July hands-on preview adds examples of the controls and map progression, but those details remain preview reporting rather than a guarantee about the final release.
What kind of game is Belmont’s Curse?
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is a 2D action-exploration game set in Paris in 1499. Its protagonist is Rose Belmont, daughter of Trevor Belmont. The central design idea is that combat and exploration are linked: the Vampire Killer whip can damage enemies, but it can also pull Rose through the environment and help her find routes that would otherwise be out of reach. Konami describes it as a traversal tool for swinging across areas, uncovering hidden rooms, and reaching inaccessible places in its February 12, 2026 announcement.
The game is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch on October 15, 2026, according to the PlayStation product listing and Konami’s official game page. That date is still upcoming as of October 13, 2026. Konami lists 60 frames per second generally and 30 frames per second on Nintendo Switch; those are the specifications published on its game page, not independent performance testing.

How does the whip work in combat?
Attack from changing positions
The Vampire Killer is not presented as a weapon Rose simply swings while standing still. Konami’s description emphasizes using it to move into position and attack from unconventional angles. That gives the player a reason to think about where Rose is in relation to an enemy, not only which attack to use. The PlayStation Blog announcement describes free movement “like a trapeze artist” and fast combat in which whip mechanics can be used to pounce on enemies. This is Konami Promotion Planner Moeko Nagaoka’s description of the intended combat, rather than a detailed control guide.

Grapple, swing, and follow up
In Corey Brotherson’s July 17, 2026 PlayStation Blog hands-on report, the grapple could be chained into an immediate attack or used to swing through an area. That distinction matters: the same tool can close distance for a strike or carry Rose past an obstacle. It means traversal can become part of an encounter, while an attack can also change Rose’s position. The report is a preview of specific play, so treat the described chain and timing as observed in that build, not as a confirmed exhaustive list of final moves.
Dodge and slide options in the preview
Brotherson also reported dodge and slide moves, including a backward flip triggered by a quick double tap. The preview does not establish every input option, whether controls can be remapped, or whether those exact timings will be unchanged in the final game. It does indicate that the whip is part of a broader movement-and-evasion toolkit rather than the only way to handle incoming attacks. For players, the practical combat question will be how to combine whip positioning with evasion and weapon choice when enemies crowd the same space.
What weapons and abilities can Rose use?
Seven weapon categories, with different reach and tempo
The official PlayStation listing identifies seven weapon categories and equipment customization. The hands-on report likewise discusses seven types and gives two examples: a balanced longsword and shorter-range cestus gauntlets with faster combos. Those examples suggest a trade-off between reach and attack speed, but they do not reveal the full weapon roster or prove that every category follows that pattern. The published information supports expecting alternatives to the whip, not treating it as Rose’s only combat option.

The official listing does not provide a complete list of weapon names, statistics, upgrade paths, or move sets. The preview’s examples are useful illustrations, not a complete catalog. Until a final in-game list is available, comparisons beyond the reported longsword and cestus would be speculation.
Arcana: abilities tied to defeated bosses
Official product information says bosses Rose defeats are sealed into tarot cards as Arcana. Their skills can then be used for spells and unique special actions, according to both the PlayStation listing and Konami game page. This connects boss encounters to Rose’s later abilities: defeating a boss is not described only as a story or progression milestone, but as a source of powers she can use afterward. The full Arcana roster, each card’s effect, and any limits on equipping or using them have not been specified in the cited official descriptions.
Relics and mana
Relics are equipment that can trigger offensive or defensive effects, according to official descriptions. The hands-on report says Rose can equip up to three Relics and names Crypt Key as one example. The three-Relic loadout and specific example come from the preview, while the broad role of Relics is official. Crypt Key should not be taken as proof that every Relic functions the same way or that all Relics are combat-focused.

The same preview reports that Rose recovers mana by defeating enemies and can spend it on spells or healing. That makes enemy encounters relevant to resource management as well as survival, but the available account does not specify exact mana costs, recovery amounts, or whether other recovery methods exist. Those details should be checked against the final game rather than inferred from the preview.

How does exploration and map progression work?
Use traversal to find routes and secrets
Konami’s announcement promises expansive locations, hidden rooms, secrets, puzzles, and traps. The whip’s movement function is directly tied to this exploration: swinging helps Rose reach areas that are otherwise inaccessible. The PlayStation Blog announcement also points to secret chambers and hidden items, including health-restoring meat behind breakable walls. The official material establishes that searching the environment matters, though it does not describe the complete layout or how many secrets the game contains.
Breakable walls and skill-gated paths
The hands-on report describes a large map, destructible secret walls, and locations visible to Rose that she could not reach until she acquired a particular skill. This is evidence of ability-gated progression in the previewed build: a route may be noticeable before it is usable, giving a reason to remember it and return later. It does not establish that every inaccessible route is skill-gated, that all map regions connect in one specific structure, or that the full game uses a particular map format.

When exploring, it is useful to distinguish four kinds of payoff supported by the public descriptions: optional hidden rooms and items; breakable-wall secrets reported in the preview; paths opened by a new ability; and routes made reachable through whip traversal. These are different clues to watch for, but the sources do not give a complete icon system or map legend. The full ability list, total map size, and exact backtracking requirements remain unspecified.
Expect hazards and puzzles, not just combat rooms
Traps and puzzles are part of the official description, alongside the game’s gothic environments. That means exploration is not simply a sequence of fights connected by corridors: players should expect environmental obstacles and reasons to inspect rooms. The materials do not detail puzzle solutions, trap types, or whether hazards can be bypassed with particular Relics, so avoid assuming a specific puzzle or platforming system before seeing the final game.
Is Belmont’s Curse a roguelike?
The official descriptions call Belmont’s Curse a 2D action-exploration game. Brotherson’s hands-on report says it steers away from roguelite elements such as permadeath and procedurally generated levels. The more useful distinction is therefore not to force a narrow genre label, but to focus on the progression the sources actually describe: hidden areas, traversal, equipment, boss-derived abilities, and routes that may open when Rose gains a skill. The preview’s statement does not by itself establish every final-game rule about death, checkpoints, or whether any replay systems exist.

What is confirmed, and what is still preview-level?
Official sources establish the setting, protagonist, broad genre, whip’s combat and traversal roles, multiple weapons, seven weapon categories, Relics, boss-derived Arcana, and exploration features such as hidden rooms, secrets, puzzles, and traps. The announced launch date is October 15, 2026, for PS5 and Nintendo Switch. These are the broad systems players can plan around based on Konami and PlayStation materials.
The detailed grapple chaining, dodge and slide controls, backward flip, longsword and cestus examples, three-Relic loadout, mana behavior, destructible secret walls, ability-gated paths, and specific preview encounters come from the July 2026 hands-on report. They should be understood as preview observations, not claims of personal testing or guarantees that every detail is unchanged at launch.
