To beat Carmilla, reach the Observatory above the Library’s Planetarium, solve the Star Chart and astrolabe puzzle, and use the opened grapple route to reach the save room and boss door. In the arena, Carmilla places an unavoidable eight-hit blood curse on Rose. Every successful blood attack lowers that counter; at zero, Carmilla uses a killing grab. Break both rotating skull shields, dodge the blood waves and marked pillars, and attack only during Carmilla’s brief surfacing windows. The reported rewards are The Occultist Arcana card with Blood Spikes, Aerial Rush, and Brauner’s Paintbrush.
Where to find Carmilla in the Library
Carmilla is the seventh listed boss encounter and appears in the Observatory above the Library’s Planetarium. You cannot simply walk to the arena from the first Library rooms. The route requires an observation-room puzzle, a newly opened grapple path, and a save room immediately before the boss door.
Reach the Lecture Room
- Explore the Library until you reach the Lecture Room connected to the Planetarium section.
- Inspect the Star Chart. The constellation pattern displayed there is the visual key for the large astrolabe in the Planetarium.
- Record the positions and shape of the constellation before leaving the room. The puzzle is alignment-based, not a combat challenge, so there is no benefit to rushing through it.
Align the Planetarium astrolabe
Use the star pattern from the Lecture Room to rotate the giant astrolabe until its openings and markers match the chart. The correct alignment activates the mechanism and opens a grapple route. If the route does not appear, return to the chart and compare the constellation’s relative positions rather than trying random rotations.
Use the grapple route and save
Follow the newly available grapple points upward through the Observation Tower. A save room sits on the approach to the Observatory. Save there before entering the boss door; it is the safest place to establish a repeatable retry point while you learn the curse timing.

What makes Carmilla’s fight different
Carmilla’s defining mechanic is a second survival resource that sits alongside Rose’s ordinary health. The 2026 Castlevania Belmont’s Curse Wiki guide describes the opening plainly: “Carmilla starts the fight by placing an unavoidable blood curse on Rose.” The counter begins at eight. Each connecting blood attack removes one count, and reaching zero triggers a killing grab.
The curse counter is not normal health
- It is applied automatically when the fight begins; you cannot prevent the initial curse.
- A hit from a blood wave, blood pillar or another blood-based attack can reduce the count.
- Healing ordinary damage does not restore lost curse counts, according to the detailed guide.
- A nearly empty Carmilla health bar does not switch the curse off. Continue treating the counter as lethal until the victory state appears.
Watch the counter before choosing an attack. When several counts remain, you can take a calculated hit to maintain pressure. When it is low, survival takes priority over one more strike, even if Carmilla is close to defeat.

Understand the arena cycle
Rotating skull shields
Carmilla is protected by two rotating skull shields. The practical priority reported by the guide is to break both shields before committing to a damage race against Carmilla herself. The shields make attacks less efficient and force you to stay in the arena longer, increasing the chance that a blood attack will consume another curse count.
Keep your position flexible while striking the shields. Do not stand directly beneath the boss pool waiting for a perfect combo; the next surfacing pattern can place a wave or pillar where you are about to land.
Surfacing and relocation
Carmilla repeatedly surfaces from the blood pool to throw skulls and create blood columns, then relocates beneath the pool. Her exposed state is the reliable damage opportunity. When she disappears, stop chasing the pool and prepare for the next hazard pattern. Attacks made during relocation tend to trade Rose’s safety for little or no useful damage.

How to answer every attack
| Attack or situation | Correct response | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Blood wave | Jump over the crest, then prepare for the return pattern before committing to an attack. | Landing immediately and assuming the hazard has ended; the follow-up wave can catch a fixed position. |
| Marked blood pillars | Move to an unmarked gap before the pillars rise. Favor a clear landing zone over a closer position to Carmilla. | Waiting for the pillar animation to finish while standing on a marked spot. |
| Pillars combined with waves | Identify a safe gap first, then time the jump so Rose clears the wave and lands away from the rising column. | Jumping as soon as the wave appears without checking where the landing space is. |
| Low curse counter | Stop risky extra swings and use the next opening only if the route in and out is clear. | Trading damage because Carmilla’s health bar looks favorable. |
| Nearly empty boss health | Continue dodging and preserve the counter until the fight ends. | Assuming the curse mechanic is disabled during the final hit sequence. |
A reliable step-by-step strategy
Phase 1: Stabilize after the opening curse
- As soon as the fight starts, note the eight-count curse display and Carmilla’s position.
- Do not spend the first seconds searching for a damage combo. Learn where the blood pool and the nearest safe floor space are.
- Let the first wave or pillar pattern pass. Your objective is to avoid losing a count before you understand the arena rhythm.
Phase 2: Break the shields
- When Carmilla surfaces, target one rotating skull shield and use a short, controllable attack string.
- Disengage before the next marked pillar or wave reaches your position. A completed long combo is less valuable than keeping the curse counter intact.
- Repeat on the second shield. If both shields are moving around the pool, prioritize the one that can be reached without crossing a marked hazard.
Phase 3: Punish safe surfacing windows
- After both shields are broken, wait for Carmilla to surface rather than attacking the blood pool.
- Approach from a side with a visible retreat path. Attack during the exposure, then leave before the next hazard pattern closes that path.
- Use the counter as your decision threshold: with several counts available, one controlled exchange may be acceptable; with only one or two, take no discretionary hit.
Phase 4: Close the fight without rushing
When Carmilla’s health is low, maintain exactly the same discipline. The guide specifically warns that a nearly empty health bar does not remove the killing-grab condition. Wait for one final clean surfacing, land the damage, and keep moving until the victory confirmation appears.

The available material does not establish a single best loadout, elemental weakness or exact damage value for Carmilla. Build advice should therefore focus on execution rather than an alleged mandatory weapon or spell.
- Save in the room immediately before the boss door so failed attempts do not repeat the Planetarium route.
- Enter with enough healing to recover ordinary health damage, but remember that healing does not refill the curse counter.
- Choose attacks you can stop quickly. A shorter string that lets you react to a marked pillar is safer than a slow animation with higher theoretical damage.
- Practice the jump distance needed to clear a wave while landing in an unmarked gap. The combined wave-and-pillar pattern is the most demanding movement check reported for the encounter.
- Keep the camera and Rose’s position readable. The fight rewards seeing the next hazard more than maximizing attacks per second.
Why attempts fail and how to correct them
“I reach zero curse counts even though my health is high.”
That is expected when blood attacks connect. Treat the curse as a separate life meter. Reduce optional attacks, especially after the counter falls below half, and spend more time observing the pattern before committing.

“My attacks seem to do almost nothing.”
Check whether both rotating skull shields are still active. The recommended order is shield destruction first, then direct damage during Carmilla’s surfacing windows.
“The wave jump works, but the pillar kills me on landing.”
The problem is usually the landing position, not the jump itself. Move toward a visible gap before the pillar rises, then jump the wave so Rose lands in that gap. When waves and pillars overlap, choose the landing zone first and adjust the jump timing around it.

“Carmilla vanished and I cannot hit her.”
She relocates beneath the blood pool after surfacing. Stop pursuing the pool, read the next marked areas, and wait for the next exposure. Chasing her underground only increases hazard contact without creating a confirmed damage opportunity.

“The boss has almost no health left, but the grab still kills me.”
The curse remains active until the encounter ends. A low boss bar is not a permission to trade hits; preserve the remaining count and finish during a clean surfacing.

AllThingsHow’s 2026 boss-order reference lists Carmilla as encounter seven in the Observatory. Its reported rewards are:
| Reward | Reported function or significance |
|---|---|
| The Occultist Arcana card | Listed with the Blood Spikes ability. |
| Aerial Rush | Granted as a separate progression reward in the same Carmilla entry. |
| Brauner’s Paintbrush | Listed among Carmilla’s encounter rewards. |
The same reference counts 14 bosses and 18 encounters, a total that includes returning fights. Carmilla is also named among the returning Castlevania foes in Konami character materials and in GamesRadar’s 2026 PS5 review, which used publisher-provided code.
What is and is not confirmed about the fight
Reliable guidance establishes the route, the eight-hit curse, the shield priority, the surfacing windows, and the wave-and-pillar responses. It does not establish exact damage values, a universal elemental weakness or one optimal loadout. Any guide claiming a precise number or mandatory build should identify its own test conditions; those details are not confirmed by the available encounter guide.
For that reason, compare strategies by measurable execution criteria rather than unsupported damage claims:
Quick Recap
- How consistently the player preserves curse counts.
- How quickly both shields are removed without crossing marked hazards.
- Whether the player can handle waves, pillars and their combination.
- Whether the route puzzle and save-room preparation are completed before repeated attempts.
- How useful the resulting Blood Spikes and Aerial Rush rewards are for the player’s planned progression.
Quick checklist for a successful attempt
- Star Chart inspected in the Lecture Room.
- Astrolabe aligned to the constellation pattern.
- Grapple route to the Observation Tower opened.
- Save made immediately before the Observatory door.
- Eight-count curse monitored independently from health.
- Both rotating skull shields broken before a damage race.
- Blood-wave crest jumped with a safe return landing.
- Marked pillar gaps chosen before the pillars rise.
- Attacks limited to Carmilla’s surfacing windows.
- No final-hit gamble while the curse counter is low.
