Short answer: Garmin Instinct 3 is the better hiking watch for recording GPS activities, following breadcrumb routes, using Back to Start or TracBack, and planning courses or waypoints with a compatible phone app. A suitably equipped Casio Pro Trek is the better fit if you mainly want a solar-powered outdoor watch with quick compass, altitude, barometric-pressure, and temperature readings. There is no universal winner because Pro Trek is a broad family of models, while Instinct 3 itself comes in different display, size, and battery configurations.

The comparison below uses manufacturer specifications and support information current to October 2026. Those specifications do not establish which watch has greater real-world GPS or compass accuracy, is more comfortable, or lasts longer in an independently controlled hike.

At a glance: which watch fits your hiking style?

Instinct 3 is not a single watch with one battery result. Garmin sells Solar and AMOLED display versions and 45 mm and 50 mm cases. Display technology, case size, satellite mode, enabled sensors, notifications, heart-rate tracking, and connected accessories all affect the experience and runtime.

Pro Trek is a family of ABC-oriented outdoor watches

Casio’s Pro Trek range includes many model generations and regional variants. The PRW-35 collection page lists Triple Sensor functions: a digital compass, barometer/thermometer, and altimeter. It also lists solar power, Multi Band 6 radio-controlled timekeeping, 10-bar water resistance, low-temperature resistance, sunrise and sunset information, world time, alarms, a full-auto LED backlight, and an STN LCD. Casio highlights dedicated buttons for one-push readings.

Those features cannot be assigned automatically to every Pro Trek. Casio’s Pro Trek overview notes that Bluetooth and Multi Band 6 are not available on every model. Check the regional product page for the exact watch you intend to buy.

Navigation and route finding

What Instinct 3 documents

For hikers who need the watch to record where they went, Instinct 3 has the clearer documented feature set. Garmin lists multi-band positioning, breadcrumb trails, Back to Start, TracBack, and reference-point functions. Breadcrumbs show your recorded path; Back to Start and TracBack are intended to help you return using the activity history or route context. Reference points let you mark a location for later orientation.

Garmin’s January 6, 2025 Instinct 3 Series announcement also says compatible watches can pair with Garmin Explore to review more detailed maps and create waypoints and courses. Compatibility depends on the particular watch, phone, app, and account setup, so verify it before relying on a planned course.

What the cited Pro Trek material does not establish

The cited PRW-35 information concentrates on compass, barometric pressure, temperature, and altitude readings. It does not establish GPS route recording or an equivalent breadcrumb and return workflow. A Pro Trek with a different model number may offer different connectivity, but you should not infer GPS navigation from the Pro Trek name alone.

Neither watch replaces a complete navigation plan

A watch screen is only one part of trail navigation. Carry the map, route information, communication method, and emergency equipment appropriate to the terrain and conditions. Even when a watch offers a return function, check your position, battery state, weather, daylight, and exit options rather than treating the feature as a guarantee of safe recovery.

Sensors: altitude, pressure, temperature, and compass

Shared ABC capability

Both product families can supply the basic ABC information hikers commonly want. Instinct 3 lists an altimeter, barometer, and 3-axis electronic compass. The PRW-35 listing specifies a digital compass, barometer/thermometer, and altimeter. That makes either type suitable for checking direction, observing elevation changes, and watching pressure trends when the selected model is configured and calibrated correctly.

How to interpret pressure and weather cues

Casio presents barometric-pressure changes as a possible weather-awareness cue. A changing pressure reading can add context to what you see on the trail, but a watch reading is not a definitive forecast. Treat it as one signal alongside official weather information, visible conditions, terrain, and local warnings.

Model-specific details matter

Sensor count alone does not tell you how a watch displays a reading, how quickly you can reach it, or what calibration options are available. Compare the manual and regional page for the exact model, especially if you need a particular temperature range, altitude workflow, compass layout, or button arrangement.

Battery life: compare modes, not headline maximums

Instinct 3 AMOLED example

On Garmin’s listed 45 mm AMOLED product page, the manufacturer estimates up to 18 days in smartwatch mode, up to 7 days with the always-on display enabled, up to 32 hours in GPS-only mode, and up to 23 hours when using all satellite systems plus multi-band. These are manufacturer estimates for that variant and mode, not independently measured hiking results. Always-on display and higher-power positioning reduce the available time.

Instinct 3 Solar example

Garmin’s Instinct 3 Solar battery information lists the 45 mm Solar model at up to 28 days in smartwatch use, up to 40 hours in GPS-only mode, or up to 130 hours with solar. In all-satellite-plus-multi-band mode, it lists up to 24 hours, or up to 40 hours with solar.

Garmin Instinct® 3 Tactical, Solar, 45mm, Black
  • Lead the mission with this rugged GPS smartwatch, featuring solar charging for unlimited battery life (assumes all-day wear in smartwatch mode with 3 hours per day outside in 50,000 lux conditions)
  • Engineered with a supertough 45 mm fiber-reinforced polymer case and metal-reinforced bezel - Physical size: 45 x 45 x 14.9 mm Fits wrists with a circumference of 137-204 mm

  • Includes a preloaded Applied Ballistics solver (requires one-time purchase via the AB Quantum mobile app)
  • Built-in LED flashlight with variable intensities and strobe modes gives you greater visibility in the outdoors and provides convenient illumination when you need it

Garmin defines the solar assumptions: the solar figures use outdoor exposure at 50,000 lux, and the smartwatch solar estimate assumes all-day wear with three hours per day outside. Actual life changes with activity tracking, heart rate, notifications, GPS settings, sensors, and connected accessories. A bright day on an exposed trail is not the same as shade, forest cover, winter light, or a watch hidden beneath clothing.

Pro Trek battery information

The PRW-35 collection lists solar power, but the cited page does not provide a directly comparable GPS-tracking runtime figure. Because the cited PRW-35 material does not document a GPS route-recording mode, comparing its solar claim directly with Garmin’s GPS-hour estimates would be misleading.

How to plan a multi-day hike

  1. Identify the exact watch variant and the activity mode you will use.
  2. Estimate recording time for each day, including navigation, heart-rate sensing, notifications, and phone connections.
  3. For a Solar Instinct, treat the solar number as conditional on Garmin’s stated light exposure, not as an unlimited-battery promise.
  4. Start with a full charge, carry a charging option when the route demands it, and test your chosen settings before departure.
  5. Keep a separate navigation and emergency plan in case the watch reaches a low-battery state.

Displays and controls

Instinct 3 choices

Instinct 3 gives you a choice between Solar and AMOLED display families and between 45 mm and 50 mm sizes. The choice affects more than appearance: it changes the battery figures, physical footprint, and the type of screen you interact with. Select the size that fits your wrist and the display behavior you prefer, then read the specification page for that exact variant.

PRW-35 controls

Casio describes the PRW-35 as using an STN LCD and large dedicated sensor buttons. That layout is aimed at quick access to compass, barometer/thermometer, and altimeter readings without navigating a smartwatch menu. Other Pro Trek models can differ in display, case, and button design, so inspect the model photographs and specification sheet rather than generalizing from PRW-35.

Choosing an interface

  • Choose the Garmin approach if you want activity recording, navigation functions, and a connected planning workflow on the same device.
  • Choose the Casio approach if direct physical access to instrument readings and conventional watch operation are more important than route software.
  • If you hike with gloves, verify the physical button layout and screen behavior in the exact model; neither family’s generic name establishes glove usability.

Water resistance, size, and weight: use named models

Casio PRW-35

The PRW-35 collection page lists 10-bar water resistance. That is a model-family listing, and you should confirm the exact regional reference before purchase.

Casio PRW-6611Y-1

The PRW-6611Y-1 product page provides a different, specific example: Tough Solar, digital compass, altimeter, barometer, thermometer, 100-meter water resistance, a 51.6 × 51.5 × 14.8 mm case, and a listed weight of 57 g. Those dimensions and weight belong to PRW-6611Y-1; they are not specifications for every Pro Trek.

Connected planning and phone dependence

Garmin explicitly documents a workflow in which compatible Instinct 3 watches pair with Garmin Explore for more detailed map review and for creating waypoints and courses. That can be useful before a hike, when dividing a long route into sections, or when saving a location to revisit.

The cited PRW-35 page documents radio-controlled timekeeping and sensor functions, not the same course-planning workflow. Pro Trek connectivity varies by model, and the overview confirms that Bluetooth is not universal. If phone-free operation is your priority, compare what remains available on the watch itself when the phone is switched off or out of range.

Which watch should you choose?

Choose Garmin Instinct 3 when…

  • You want the watch to record a GPS activity rather than only display compass, altitude, pressure, or temperature.
  • You want breadcrumb, Back to Start, TracBack, or reference-point functions.
  • You value multi-band positioning or SatIQ as part of your selected configuration.
  • You plan courses or waypoints through a compatible Garmin Explore setup.
  • You are willing to select a display and size variant whose battery behavior matches your recording needs.

Choose a Casio Pro Trek when…

  • Your essential trail tools are a compass, altimeter, barometer, and thermometer.
  • You prefer solar-powered timekeeping and, on supported models, Multi Band 6 radio-controlled time.
  • You want large dedicated buttons for quick sensor readings.
  • You do not need the GPS route-recording and return functions documented for Instinct 3.
  • You have identified a specific Pro Trek model whose water resistance, dimensions, connectivity, and display meet your requirements.

Choose neither on specifications alone when…

  • You need independently verified GPS accuracy, compass accuracy, comfort, or endurance figures.
  • You require a full navigation system with map redundancy and emergency communications.
  • You have not yet decided whether you want a Solar or AMOLED Instinct 3, or which Pro Trek reference you mean.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Write down the job. Decide whether your first requirement is route recording, return navigation, sensor readings, solar timekeeping, or connected planning.
  2. Name the exact Garmin variant. Record Solar or AMOLED, 45 mm or 50 mm, and the satellite mode you expect to use.
  3. Name the exact Casio reference. Confirm whether it is PRW-35, PRW-6611Y-1, or another regional model, then check its manual and product page.
  4. Check navigation evidence. Look for documented GPS recording and return functions rather than assuming that an altimeter and compass imply route navigation.
  5. Calculate battery conservatively. Use the relevant GPS mode, screen setting, sensors, and Garmin’s solar-light assumptions where applicable.
  6. Check physical fit. Compare case dimensions, weight, button access, and display type for the named model.
  7. Prepare redundancy. Carry the maps, communication method, power, and emergency equipment appropriate for the route.

Common mistakes to avoid

Treating Pro Trek as one product

Bluetooth, Multi Band 6, case size, display, and water-resistance ratings vary across the family. A feature on one model is not evidence that every Pro Trek has it.

Comparing unlike battery numbers

A smartwatch-mode estimate, an AMOLED always-on estimate, GPS-only hours, and a solar-assisted figure describe different conditions. Put the mode, variant, and solar assumptions next to every number you compare.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a weather trend is a forecast

Pressure changes can be useful context, but they do not replace official forecasts or observation of actual trail conditions.

Confusing manufacturer claims with field proof

The cited sources are official product and support pages. They establish listed functions and estimates, not a controlled head-to-head result for accuracy, comfort, or real-world runtime.

Bottom line

For a hiker choosing between the documented capabilities, Garmin Instinct 3 is the more capable navigation platform: it adds GPS activity recording, multi-band positioning, return and breadcrumb tools, and a documented connected course workflow. Casio Pro Trek is the more focused instrument watch when you want solar timekeeping and immediate compass, altitude, pressure, and temperature information. Pick the exact model first, then judge battery mode, controls, size, and connectivity against the way you actually hike.
