Casio’s stated reason for resisting a redesign is that the F-91W’s appeal rests on its familiar shape, straightforward operation and useful everyday functions. The company says it has improved how the watch is made without changing the experience people recognize. That distinction matters: preserving the design does not mean freezing every part of production.
What Casio means by refusing to “fix” the F-91W
In an interview published by T3 on 30 August 2026, Casio Senior Marketing Campaign Manager Warren Halliwell described the pressure to add features or modernize a product—and the consequences those changes can bring. His test for a proposed change was not simply whether it could be added, but whether people would still value the watch for the same reasons.
That is a product-design argument, not a claim that the F-91W is flawless or that no part of it can ever change. Casio’s official series history says the watch’s form has remained unchanged since its launch in 1989. Halliwell told T3 that manufacturing methods, production efficiency, testing procedures and quality-control systems have evolved behind the scenes while the wearing experience has been preserved.
The timeline is worth correcting: from the 1989 launch to T3’s 30 August 2026 article is 37 years, not 35. The familiar “35 years” framing is therefore out of date for a piece published in 2026.

Which parts of the F-91W make the case for restraint?
A compact set of everyday functions
The current Casio F-91W-1 listing describes a digital watch with time and date, a stopwatch, an alarm, an hourly time signal, an LED light and an auto-calendar. Its stopwatch measures to 1/100 of a second, with a stated capacity of 59 minutes, 59.99 seconds; the display can use 12- or 24-hour time.
That list is intentionally different from the feature set of a connected watch. The F-91W-1 listing does not describe apps, notifications or connectivity. For someone who wants those capabilities, this watch is not a substitute; for someone who wants timekeeping and a handful of familiar functions without managing a broader feature set, adding them may solve a problem the watch was not designed to address.

Simple construction as a design choice
Casio’s series page describes choices including urethane resin, a reduced number of module components and pins rather than standard spring bars to connect the band and watch. These details help explain how the design pursues simplicity and affordability. They do not, by themselves, establish comparative durability or reveal Casio’s production costs.

What the watch offers—and what its specifications do not promise
Casio’s current F-91W-1 listing gives an accuracy rating of ±30 seconds per month and estimates approximately seven years of battery life from a CR2016 battery. The battery figure is an estimate, not a guarantee of how long any individual watch will run.
The listing calls the watch water resistant but does not state a depth rating. That wording alone is not a basis for assuming it is suitable for swimming or diving. If you are considering a replacement band, check the exact band’s fit and attachment: the listed compatible band size is 145–200 mm, but that figure does not verify a particular third-party strap.

Why changing the watch could cost more than it adds
Halliwell’s remarks point to a trade-off rather than a blanket rule against innovation. A new feature or specification can bring extra complexity and alter a product’s feel or operation. On a watch whose appeal depends partly on a narrow, familiar set of functions, each proposed change has to earn its place without undermining the reasons people choose the existing design.

Casio’s position also separates visible continuity from production stagnation. The company can revise processes for manufacturing, testing and quality control without making the front-facing product feel like a different watch. That is the core of the “don’t fix it” approach: preserve the defining experience while allowing less visible work to evolve.
Who the F-91W is—and is not—aimed at
Halliwell told T3 that the audience extends beyond people looking for a low-cost everyday watch, naming fashion-conscious buyers, design enthusiasts, collectors and younger consumers. That is a company representative’s qualitative assessment, not the result of a published audience survey.
The practical choice is straightforward: the F-91W-1 suits someone who values a lightweight, familiar digital watch and its listed everyday functions. Someone who needs connected features, a stated water-depth rating, or capabilities beyond those Casio lists should look for a product whose specifications explicitly cover those needs. Casio’s current listed specifications and Halliwell’s explanation support preserving the F-91W’s identity; they do not establish that it is categorically more reliable or durable than other watches.
