The Carrera Subway-E 2 is the more convincing choice for riders who want wider tyres, a larger battery and a reported lower purchase price; the Boardman HYB 8.9e is the better fit if low weight, a carbon fork and a road-oriented hybrid setup matter more. The practical difference is portability: T3 lists the Carrera at 21.4 kg with its battery, while Halfords Ireland lists the Boardman at approximately 15.5 kg. Those weights may not have been measured on the same frame size or by the same method, but the gap is still worth investigating if you regularly carry a bike.

There is no matched test of the two bikes, and a current Boardman price was not established. Treat advertised range as estimates rather than a direct contest, check the exact model and size on the listing, and try the fit before choosing.

The weights come from different published sources and are not confirmed as directly comparable measurements. Likewise, range figures are manufacturer or retailer claims, not results from a shared route or controlled test. Use the table to identify what to check for your needs, not as proof that one bike is universally faster, more efficient or better value.

Which one is better for your commute?

Choose the Carrera for wider tyres and rougher routes

The Subway-E 2 is the more natural match for a commute that includes broken pavement, towpaths or maintained gravel, especially if you want a planted feel and do not often need to lift the bike. T3’s reviewer described it as stable and confidence-inspiring in town and on uneven ground. The reviewer also reported useful assistance on a climb averaging about 10%, particularly in Boost mode. That is one rider’s account, not a controlled comparison or a guarantee for every rider, hill or load.

Its 27.5-inch wheels and 1.95-inch tyres are wider than the Boardman’s 35 mm tyres. That setup points toward comfort and composure on rougher surfaces, while the rigid fork avoids suspension complexity. It is not a promise of off-road capability: surface quality, tyre pressure, rider skill and the bike’s intended use still matter. If your route is mostly smooth tarmac, the wider tyres may be less important than the Boardman’s lower listed weight and road-oriented specification.

Wider rubber can also make a loaded bike feel more secure over pothole edges and loose sections, but it usually occupies more space in a rack or hallway. Check the clearances of your existing storage and confirm that any mudguards you buy are designed for the 27.5 x 1.95-inch format. The rigid high-tensile fork means there is no suspension setup to maintain, but your hands and wrists still depend on sensible tyre pressure and a suitable riding position.

Choose the Boardman if carrying and lifting are routine

The HYB 8.9e’s strongest practical case is its lower listed weight. If your daily routine includes stairs, a narrow hallway, a train connection, a car rack or lifting the bike into storage, the weight difference may matter more than a small difference in advertised range. Try lifting the actual frame size you intend to buy: published weights may not be measured consistently, and even a lighter e-bike can be awkward to handle depending on its balance and where you grip it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A removable battery can reduce the weight for a lift, but do not assume removing it makes either bicycle easy to carry. Ask the seller for the bike-only and battery weights if that distinction affects your routine, and practise carrying it by the frame rather than by cables, controls or a wheel. A six-kilogram-plus difference is meaningful on repeated stairs, yet balance, handlebar width and the location of the motor can change how tiring a lift feels.

Its 700c wheels, narrower puncture-protected tyres and carbon fork suit a road-oriented hybrid setup. Boardman describes it as “a fast and practical flat-bar hybrid style e-bike”; that is the manufacturer’s characterization, not independent test evidence. The carbon fork and 10-speed gearing are useful specification distinctions, but they do not alone establish which bike feels faster or more comfortable for you.

Do not pick by motor torque alone

The Carrera uses a rear-hub motor; the Boardman uses a Fazua mid-drive. Their quoted torque ratings differ, but the layout and number do not settle how either will feel on your route. Assistance also depends on the system’s tuning, selected mode, cadence, rider effort, gradient and load. No same-rider, same-route comparison is available here, so test both if motor feel is a deciding factor.

A hub motor can feel different when starting from a junction because the motor is in the wheel, while a mid-drive applies assistance through the bicycle’s gearing. That general distinction is a reason to test starts, corners and hills rather than a verdict about either model. Use the gear range on a climb, notice how quickly assistance responds and check whether the system feels predictable when you ease off the pedals.

The Carrera has a torque sensor and five named assistance modes: Eco, Tour, Sport, Sport+ and Boost. Boardman specifies three assistance levels. These are not directly equivalent mode scales. Consider whether you want finer assistance choices, and ask the retailer how the system behaves at low speed, on hills and when restarting in traffic.

Range: why the advertised figures do not settle it

The Carrera has the larger stated battery capacity, but that does not by itself prove it will travel farther in every real commute. The published figures use different descriptions and conditions: the Carrera’s 25–40 miles is reported by T3, Boardman claims up to 56 miles in Breeze mode, and Halfords Ireland gives a 25–30-mile average and up to 60 miles under ideal conditions for the HYB 8.9E. These are not controlled, comparable tests.

For planning, use the more conservative estimate relevant to your route, then leave a margin rather than budgeting to arrive with an almost empty battery. Halfords says range varies with terrain, assistance level, rider weight and weather. Hills, frequent stops, headwinds, cold or wet conditions, and carrying work gear can all make a quoted maximum a poor guide to a particular journey. A smaller battery may be sufficient for a short commute with charging at home; a longer or hillier round trip calls for more caution.

Write down your full round-trip distance, not just the outward leg. Decide which assistance setting you are likely to use, whether you can recharge at work, and whether you need the battery indoors for charging or storage. The Boardman listing gives a three-hour charge time; a Carrera charge time is not stated in T3’s cited specification, so do not assume the two recharge at the same rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery capacity is expressed in watt-hours, not miles. The Carrera’s 378 Wh figure is higher than the Boardman’s 250 Wh figure, but motor efficiency, rider input, speed, tyre pressure, gradients and stop-start traffic all affect energy use. If you regularly ride in a high assistance mode, plan around the lower end of the stated range. If you can charge at work, confirm that the battery can be removed conveniently and that your employer permits charging and storage.

Braking, gearing and everyday control

Both bicycles use hydraulic disc brakes, which is useful for predictable control in wet commuting conditions, but the named systems differ. The Carrera uses Tektro HD-M275 brakes with Shimano CUES nine-speed gearing. The Boardman uses hydraulic discs and a ten-speed Shimano Deore drivetrain. More ratios do not automatically mean faster travel; the useful question is whether the lowest gear lets you spin comfortably on your steepest regular hill and whether the shifts remain reliable when the bike is loaded.

During a test ride, shift under moderate pedal pressure, check that the chain does not hesitate and apply each brake progressively. Listen for rubbing, inspect lever reach and make sure you can operate the controls while wearing the gloves you expect to use. Ask about the service schedule, replacement pad availability and who will handle warranty work for the motor, battery and charger.

Specs and equipment to check before buying

Confirm the exact Boardman model

Boardman model names are easy to mix up. This comparison concerns the electric HYB 8.9e, also styled HYB 8.9E in a retailer listing. It is not the MTX-E 8.9, which has a different Shimano EP6 motor and 504 Wh battery, and it is not the non-electric HYB 8.9. Do not carry over specifications between those bikes. Check the listing, model year, frame size and product photographs before paying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask for the complete specification sheet when a listing uses only “HYB 8.9” in the headline. Confirm the motor name, battery capacity, wheel size and whether the item is electric. A marketplace photograph can show a different year or trim, and a familiar model name is not enough evidence that every component matches the figures above.

Check what is included for work-ready commuting

Halfords Ireland says the Boardman has mudguard and pannier mounts, but its listing does not include a pannier rack as standard. A mount is not an accessory: budget separately for any rack, panniers or mudguards you need, and verify that the parts fit the exact model. Do not assume these items—or a lock—are supplied with either bike unless the current listing says so.

T3 notes that the Carrera has no GPS tracking. That is not the same as saying it cannot be secured, but it makes a separate, appropriately rated lock a sensible part of the ownership budget. The sources cited here do not establish a particular lock or whether lights, a rack or mudguards are included on a current sale listing.

Make a work-ready checklist: lock, front and rear lights if they are not included, weather protection, a rack or panniers, and a way to carry a charged battery safely indoors. Add the cost of professional assembly or a fit adjustment if you are not comfortable setting up the bicycle yourself. These extras can materially narrow a headline price difference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check fit, size and ownership terms

T3 lists the Carrera in S, M and L. Confirm that the available frame size suits your height and riding position rather than choosing from wheel size or motor specifications alone. Confirm the Boardman’s available size range with the seller for the exact model year; the cited specifications do not establish it. A test ride can reveal reach, saddle comfort, handling and assistance feel that a product page cannot.

Before ordering, check the live listing for price, stock, delivery or assembly arrangements, warranty terms and included equipment. Halfords says test rides can be booked at participating stores; contact the store to confirm whether it has the relevant size and model available to try. Compare the total cost you will actually pay, including any fit adjustment and commuting accessories.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Also check the 120 kg maximum rider-weight specification, remembering that luggage contributes to the load. Add the weight of panniers, a laptop, clothing and locks when deciding whether the limit suits your use. Confirm whether the stated limit refers only to the rider or to rider and luggage together on the current listing, and ask the retailer if the wording is unclear.

Cost: compare the complete commuting setup

T3 reported £1,299 for the Carrera Subway-E 2 in its review published 9 October 2026. That is a useful reference point, not a guaranteed current selling price. A current UK price and stock position for the Boardman HYB 8.9e were not established, so it would be misleading to call either bike the cheaper purchase without checking live listings on the day you buy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a simple all-in total for each option. Include the bicycle, delivery or assembly, a quality lock, lights if needed, mudguards, a rack and panniers, and any immediate fit changes such as a different saddle or stem. If you need a train-friendly storage solution or a car-rack adapter, include that too. The bike with the lower ticket price may not be cheaper once it is equipped for five days of commuting.

Warranty coverage, local servicing and replacement-part access are also part of value. Confirm who handles electrical faults, how the removable battery is supported and whether the retailer can diagnose the motor system. Keep the invoice, charger and model details, and verify the exact warranty period and exclusions before payment rather than relying on a general brand promise.

How to make the final choice

  1. Map the real route. Include both directions, hills, rough sections, traffic stops and any train or car connections. The Carrera’s wider tyres and the Boardman’s road-oriented setup will matter differently on each route.
  2. Test the carrying problem. If you must use stairs or lift the bike onto a rack, handle the intended frame size in person. Published weights are useful clues, but the figures here may not share a measurement method.
  3. Set a realistic range requirement. Compare the round trip with conservative expectations, not the largest advertised number. Consider charging access, assistance mode and conditions.
  4. Test ride and check fit. If possible, ride both over representative surfaces and a hill. Test how each starts, climbs, brakes, turns and feels at your normal pace.
  5. Compare complete prices. Check current bike price, availability, required equipment, assembly and any fitting changes. The Carrera’s reported review price is not a guarantee of its current price, and no current Boardman UK price is established here.
  6. Verify the listing. Match the model name, motor, battery, frame size and included accessories against the seller’s current specification and photographs.

Verdict

For a rider who values rough-surface confidence, wider tyres and a larger battery, and can live with a heavier bike, the Carrera Subway-E 2 is the stronger use-case match. For a rider who prioritizes lifting and storage, prefers a road-focused hybrid setup and can find an acceptable current price, the Boardman HYB 8.9e makes more sense. Because there is no head-to-head ride test and the Boardman’s current UK price is unconfirmed, fit, carrying needs and a test ride should decide close calls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which bike is lighter?

Halfords Ireland lists the Boardman HYB 8.9E at approximately 15.5 kg, while T3 lists the Carrera Subway-E 2 at 21.4 kg including its battery. The measurements may use different frame sizes or methods, so confirm the weight of the exact bike you will buy. The Boardman is nevertheless the clear candidate for riders who regularly use stairs, trains or a car rack.

Which has the longer range?

There is no controlled answer. T3 reports a 25–40-mile stated range for the Carrera. Boardman claims up to 56 miles in Breeze mode, while Halfords Ireland lists 25–30 miles average and up to 60 miles in ideal conditions for the HYB 8.9E. Terrain, assistance level, rider weight and weather can change the result, so plan from a conservative figure and your full round trip.

Can the Carrera handle gravel or rough paths?

T3’s reviewer found the Carrera stable and confidence-inspiring on uneven ground, and its 27.5 x 1.95-inch tyres are wider than the Boardman’s 35 mm tyres. That makes it the more natural mixed-surface choice, but it is not a blanket off-road guarantee. Surface condition, tyre pressure, speed and rider skill still matter.

Is the Boardman better for hills because it has more torque?

The Boardman’s Fazua Evation system is specified at 60 Nm, compared with 45 Nm for the Carrera’s BAFANG G020 hub motor. Torque figures alone do not predict the complete riding experience. Motor tuning, gearing, cadence, assistance mode, rider effort and load all matter. Test both on a representative hill if climbing feel is important.

Can I carry either bike upstairs with the battery removed?

Both batteries are removable, but the published figures here do not give a like-for-like bike-only weight. Removing the battery may help, yet the frame, wheels and balance still determine how manageable the lift feels. Handle the exact frame size before buying and ask the retailer for separate bike and battery weights if stairs are part of your routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do they include a pannier rack and mudguards?

Halfords Ireland says the Boardman has mudguard and pannier mounts, but no pannier rack is supplied as standard on that listing. Do not assume a rack, mudguards, lights or lock are included with either model. Check the current product page and budget for compatible accessories separately.

What is the current price of each bike?

T3 reported £1,299 for the Carrera in a review published 9 October 2026. That may not be today’s price. A current UK price and stock position for the Boardman were not established, so check live retailer listings before making a value comparison.

Which model should I test ride?

Ideally, test both in the frame size you would buy. Ride smooth pavement, a rough section and a hill; practise starts, braking, shifting and low-speed turns. Halfords says test rides can be booked at participating stores, but confirm that the relevant model and size are available.

The Bottom Line

Choose the Carrera Subway-E 2 for wider tyres, a 378 Wh battery and a mixed-surface commute where carrying weight is not a daily issue. Choose the Boardman HYB 8.9e for its approximately 15.5 kg listed weight, carbon fork and road-oriented hybrid specification. Check live prices, exact model year, equipment and fit, then test ride before deciding.
