A CarPlay entitlement is Apple’s permission for an app to use a specific CarPlay category. Developers must request that managed capability, accept Apple’s CarPlay Entitlement Addendum, pass Apple’s review, and build a separate CarPlay scene with the templates and APIs allowed for that category. Installing an iPhone app, connecting a cable, or pairing wirelessly does not give it permission to display its normal interface on the vehicle screen.
What a CarPlay entitlement actually is
An entitlement is a capability recorded in Apple’s developer system and applied to an app’s signing and provisioning configuration. For CarPlay, it is not a switch that an iPhone owner can turn on. Apple grants the capability to an approved developer account for a defined app purpose.
The entitlement controls both policy and technology. Policy determines whether the app is appropriate for a CarPlay category. Technology determines which CarPlay APIs, templates, windows, and interaction patterns the signed app can use. Without the entitlement, the app cannot legitimately ship those CarPlay features, even if its phone version is installed and the iPhone is connected to a compatible vehicle.
Apple’s documented process requires a developer to request the appropriate entitlement through CarPlay Contact Us, agree to the CarPlay Entitlement Addendum, and submit to Apple’s review. Apple says it reviews each application using predefined criteria. If approved, Apple adds the capability as a managed capability on the developer account; the developer then updates the App ID and provisioning profile and enables the entitlement in the project.

Which CarPlay categories have entitlements?
CarPlay is organized around specific driving-related activities rather than a general “show my iPhone app” permission. Apple’s entitlement table identifies these categories and entitlement keys:
| CarPlay category | Entitlement key | Typical CarPlay surface | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audio | com.apple.developer.carplay-audio |
Apple-approved audio templates controlled through the CarPlay interface controller | Audio templates are restricted to apps with the audio entitlement. |
| Communication | com.apple.developer.carplay-communication |
Communication-oriented templates and supported calling or messaging integrations | The app must fit the communication use case and use the permitted interaction model. |
| EV charging | com.apple.developer.carplay-charging |
Point-of-interest and information templates for charging locations and related details | Those information templates are limited to approved charging, parking, or quick-ordering apps as applicable. |
| Maps and navigation | com.apple.developer.carplay-maps |
A CarPlay-managed map window plus navigation templates and controls | Navigation apps are the only category allowed to use the CarPlay map window for drawing map content. |
| Parking | com.apple.developer.carplay-parking |
Point-of-interest and information templates for parking services | It is not a general location-search permission for unrelated apps. |
| Quick food ordering | com.apple.developer.carplay-quick-ordering |
Constrained ordering and information templates | The app must implement the approved quick-ordering experience rather than its ordinary phone storefront. |
The category names describe the intended function, not marketing labels. An app cannot select a category simply because one of its features resembles it. Apple’s review determines whether the app’s primary CarPlay use fits the entitlement requested.
Why an ordinary iPhone app cannot appear automatically
CarPlay is not a second, unrestricted iPhone display
When an iPhone connects to CarPlay, the vehicle receives a controlled app experience. It does not receive a mirrored copy of every phone screen. Apple defines the kinds of information, controls, and navigation patterns that can be presented while driving. A normal iPhone app therefore has no supported way to project its existing UIKit or SwiftUI screens onto the dashboard merely because the phone is connected.

Tested for vibration resistance to support stable performance on bumpy roads.
Approval is enforced by signing and provisioning
CarPlay capabilities are code-signing entitlements. The developer must have Apple’s managed capability on the account, include the matching entitlement in the app configuration, and use provisioning that authorizes it. An app compiled without that authorization cannot claim the protected CarPlay APIs as though they were ordinary phone APIs.
The vehicle interface is a separate scene
A CarPlay app declares a CarPlay scene in Info.plist and supplies a scene delegate, normally by implementing CPTemplateApplicationSceneDelegate. That scene starts when CarPlay connects and communicates with the CarPlay interface controller. The phone scene and the CarPlay scene can share application data and services, but they are different UI surfaces with different lifecycle and interaction rules.
Templates limit interaction by design
Most categories build their interface from Apple’s approved templates rather than arbitrary view hierarchies. The templates constrain layout, text density, navigation depth, selection controls, and available actions. Apple also marks particular templates as exclusive: audio templates require the audio entitlement; navigation symbols are reserved for navigation apps; and point-of-interest or information templates are limited to parking, EV-charging, or quick-food-ordering apps. These technical gates stop an unrelated app from repurposing a convenient template.

Apple’s documentation does not publish a numeric safety threshold or an acceptance percentage. It is reasonable to infer that the constrained templates and category review support safer, less distracting interactions, but that inference should not be presented as an Apple-published formula.
How developers obtain CarPlay access
- Define the qualifying purpose. Decide whether the proposed experience is audio, communication, EV charging, maps/navigation, parking, or quick food ordering. The requested category must describe the actual CarPlay function, not a secondary feature added to an unrelated app.
- Request the entitlement. Use Apple’s CarPlay Contact Us process, identify the app and category, and agree to the CarPlay Entitlement Addendum. This request is separate from simply enabling a capability in Xcode.
- Pass Apple’s review. Apple evaluates the application against predefined criteria. Approval gives the developer account the managed capability; it does not automatically redesign the app or make every phone screen available in the car.
- Update signing records. Add the approved capability to the App ID and regenerate or update the provisioning profile. If the profile does not contain the capability, a locally enabled entitlement will not produce a valid distributable build.
- Enable the entitlement in Xcode. Add the category entitlement to the project’s
Entitlements.plistand verify that the target signs with the intended App ID and profile. The entitlement key must match the approved category. - Declare the CarPlay scene. Add the CarPlay scene configuration to
Info.plist, including the scene role and delegate class required by the app’s architecture. - Implement the scene delegate. Implement
CPTemplateApplicationSceneDelegateto receive the CarPlay connection, obtain the interface controller, and present the first approved template. Handle connection and disconnection so the app can release or restore CarPlay-specific state cleanly. - Build only with permitted surfaces. Use the templates and APIs available to the entitlement. A navigation app follows the special map-window path; other categories generally present approved templates through the interface controller.
- Add related frameworks where they fit. Apple identifies SiriKit for messaging, CallKit (often together with SiriKit) for VoIP calling, and MapKit for navigation. These frameworks extend an approved CarPlay experience; they do not replace the entitlement request.
- Submit with the additional review requirements. CarPlay-enabled apps are subject to extra CarPlay App Store Review Guidelines in addition to the normal App Store review.
How the CarPlay interface differs by category
Audio apps
Audio apps use CarPlay’s approved audio templates and playback controls. The audio entitlement is the gate for those templates. A podcast, radio, or music app can expose browse and playback actions that fit the permitted design, but it cannot use the entitlement to show arbitrary account-management screens or unrelated content.
Communication apps
Communication apps present the interactions Apple allows for messaging or calling. SiriKit can support messaging workflows, while CallKit can integrate VoIP calls, often alongside SiriKit. The entitlement and the framework integration address different layers: the entitlement authorizes the CarPlay category, and the frameworks provide system-level communication behavior where applicable.

Navigation apps
Navigation is the distinctive category because it can receive a CarPlay-managed window for map drawing. Apple states that navigation apps are the only app category with access to this window. The app still uses approved templates and controls around the map, but the map itself is rendered through this specialized path rather than as a generic phone view.
EV charging and parking apps
These apps use approved point-of-interest and information templates to help a driver find and evaluate relevant locations. The templates are deliberately scoped to the service: a charging app can present charging information, and a parking app can present parking information, but neither entitlement is a general-purpose location or directory capability.

Quick food-ordering apps
Quick ordering is designed for a constrained, vehicle-appropriate ordering flow. The app must use the category’s permitted templates and actions instead of attempting to reproduce its full phone checkout, account, promotion, or discovery interface.

CarPlay app versus normal iPhone app
| Aspect | Normal iPhone app | CarPlay-enabled app |
|---|---|---|
| Permission | Uses ordinary iOS capabilities approved for the app. | Requires an Apple-managed CarPlay entitlement for a defined category. |
| User interface | Can present the app’s normal phone screens. | Uses CarPlay templates; navigation additionally receives the managed map window. |
| Connection behavior | Runs on the iPhone whether or not a vehicle is connected. | Declares and launches a separate CarPlay scene when the vehicle connection is available. |
| Interaction frameworks | May use iOS frameworks according to its ordinary feature set. | May combine CarPlay APIs with SiriKit, CallKit, or MapKit where the category supports them. |
| Review | Subject to standard App Store review. | Subject to standard review plus additional CarPlay App Store Review Guidelines. |
This distinction explains why an app can be excellent on an iPhone yet absent from the CarPlay app launcher. Phone functionality is not evidence that the developer has requested, received, or implemented a CarPlay entitlement.
What to check when an app does not show in CarPlay
- Check the category. Confirm that the app’s purpose fits one of Apple’s supported CarPlay categories. A general utility, game, social feed, video service, or other unsupported purpose cannot be made compatible by changing a setting.
- Check entitlement approval. The developer must have Apple’s managed capability. Adding a key locally without approval does not grant access.
- Check signing and provisioning. The App ID, provisioning profile, and signed build must all carry the approved capability. A stale profile can leave a correctly edited project without a usable entitlement.
- Check the CarPlay scene declaration. The app needs the correct
Info.plistscene configuration and a workingCPTemplateApplicationSceneDelegate. Without that separate scene, the phone app may run normally while offering no CarPlay surface. - Check the permitted UI path. A non-navigation app should not expect a map window, and an app outside audio should not expect audio-only templates. The entitlement determines which APIs are available.
- Check review status and release contents. Approval of a developer account capability and approval of a particular app release are related but distinct steps. The submitted build still has to meet the additional CarPlay review requirements.
For an end user, there is no supported workaround that forces an unapproved app into CarPlay. A cable, wireless connection, reinstall, or iPhone setting cannot create an entitlement or convert a phone interface into a compliant CarPlay scene.
Why Apple keeps the system category-based
CarPlay must work across many vehicle displays and input systems while the driver’s attention is divided. Apple therefore combines a policy gate, signed capabilities, category-specific APIs, constrained templates, and additional review. Together, those layers let Apple decide which app purposes are appropriate and give developers a predictable, limited interface for delivering them.
The result is intentionally narrower than iOS. The restriction is not that iPhones lack the power to display another app; it is that CarPlay is a managed vehicle environment with a separate contract between Apple, the developer, and the car system. Only an app that satisfies all parts of that contract—category approval, entitlement, provisioning, scene architecture, permitted templates or map window, and CarPlay review—can appear as a supported CarPlay app.
The practical answer for users and developers
If your iPhone app does not appear in CarPlay, the most likely explanation is not a broken cable or a hidden iOS toggle. The app either does not belong to a supported category, has not received Apple’s managed entitlement, or has not implemented and shipped the required CarPlay scene and approved interface. Users can only use the CarPlay support the developer and Apple have provided.
For developers, CarPlay access is a product and compliance decision, not a cosmetic port of the phone UI. Start with the qualifying category, obtain Apple’s entitlement, configure signing and the CarPlay scene, implement the category’s templates or navigation window, integrate supporting frameworks where appropriate, and satisfy the additional review rules.
