Carbon nanotubes can adsorb hydrogen, but pure carbon nanotubes are not a demonstrated room-temperature onboard storage solution. The best-established pure single-walled nanotube results are strongly temperature-dependent: cryogenic tests show useful adsorption, while room-temperature uptake is much lower. A U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) program review concluded that pure, undoped single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) did not meet its 6 wt% ambient-temperature materials goal.
Modified nanotubes remain an active research direction. For example, a 2023 study modeled lithium-doped SWNT bundles and reported that a gravimetric target could be exceeded under specified simulated conditions, while modeled volumetric performance remained insufficient for light-duty vehicle storage. That is computational evidence, not a validated storage tank or commercial product.
What hydrogen storage in carbon nanotubes actually means
Most CNT hydrogen-storage proposals use the nanotube as a sorbent: hydrogen molecules attach to accessible outer surfaces, inner channels, spaces between bundled tubes, or pores created during processing. The material does not normally contain a separate liquid hydrogen reservoir. Instead, hydrogen is held at a surface and released when pressure, temperature, or chemical conditions change.

Reported capacity is usually expressed as weight percent (wt%), the mass of stored hydrogen relative to the mass basis used for the measurement. That basis matters. A number measured for a purified powder is not automatically the capacity of a packed bed, pressure vessel, thermal-management hardware, valves, insulation, or complete vehicle system.

Hydrogen can remain molecular or, in some engineered materials, dissociate and interact more strongly with the carbon or an added metal. Those two cases lead to different advantages and drawbacks:
Physisorption: reversible but weak at warm temperatures
Physisorption is attraction between intact hydrogen molecules and a surface through relatively weak intermolecular forces. It is attractive for storage because pressure reduction or warming can release the gas with comparatively little chemical change, and repeated cycling can in principle be straightforward. The weakness of the interaction is also the central problem: at room temperature, thermal motion makes it difficult for enough hydrogen to remain adsorbed unless pressure is high and the surface has exceptionally favorable sites.
Chemisorption: stronger binding, harder release
Chemisorption involves a stronger chemical interaction, often after hydrogen dissociates into atoms. Stronger binding can improve retention at higher temperatures, but it can also make desorption slow or energy-intensive. A material that holds hydrogen tightly is not automatically useful if a vehicle cannot release the gas at the required rate and temperature.

Reviews of carbonaceous storage materials discuss approaches intended to sit between these extremes, including metal decoration and Kubas-type interactions. The objective is to increase binding energy without making release impractical. These are material-engineering strategies for modified CNTs, not evidence that unmodified CNTs already satisfy an onboard target.
What the strongest pure-CNT measurements show
The DOE Hydrogen Sorption Center of Excellence (HSCoE) reviewed systematic testing and literature claims for nanotubes. Its final report, published in 2010 and summarizing the program’s October 2006 decision, identified reproducible results for pure carbon SWNTs under specific conditions:

| Material and result | Temperature | Pressure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approximately 3 wt% hydrogen uptake | Approximately 77 K | Approximately 20 bar | Reproducibly achieved for pure SWNTs in the HSCoE review; cryogenic, materials-level result |
| Approximately 0.5 wt% hydrogen uptake | Room temperature | Approximately 70 bar | Reproducibly achieved for pure SWNTs in the same review; much lower than the cryogenic result |
These figures answer “how much” only when their conditions travel with them. They do not describe a single CNT material performing equally across temperatures, and they do not represent the deliverable hydrogen of a complete storage system.
The HSCoE assessment found no verified pure-SWNT result at the 6 wt% ambient-temperature benchmark discussed by the program, including tests at pressures up to 100 bar. The conclusion was a historical program decision about pure, undoped SWNTs; it does not establish that every doped, functionalized, porous, or composite CNT formulation is impossible.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy CNT capacity numbers differ so widely
Early carbon-nanotube and carbon-nanofiber papers reported a wide spread of capacities. A 2003 review by Hirscher and Becher documented how results changed with measurement method and carbon structure, and why some spectacular room-temperature claims were difficult to reconcile with classical physisorption calculations. It also described high carbon-nanofiber measurements that did not survive cross-checking between laboratories. That history is important because a capacity number without a measurement context can be misleading.
DOE materials guidance identifies several variables that can change an apparent storage value:
- Nanotube identity: single-walled and multi-walled tubes have different surfaces, diameters, interiors, and packing behavior.
- Composition and purity: residual catalyst, amorphous carbon, oxidation, moisture, and other impurities alter both the active surface and the sample mass used in a wt% calculation.
- Accessible structure: hydrogen may reach external walls, open tube ends, interstitial spaces in bundles, or engineered pores. A nominal surface area does not prove that all of it is accessible under operating conditions.
- Temperature and pressure path: adsorption and desorption conditions, equilibration time, pressure ramp, and thermal gradients can affect the measured amount.
- Measurement method and sample size: gravimetric and volumetric instruments have different error sources, and small samples magnify balance, buoyancy, leakage, and calibration effects.
- Reporting basis: a value may be total uptake, excess adsorption, calculated capacity, or a modeled result. Those quantities cannot be compared as though they were identical.
DOE’s sorbent-storage overview emphasizes that the experimentally determined quantity is the Gibbs surface excess. In its wording: “Unlike chemical hydrogen or metal hydrides, the quantity that is measured either gravimetrically or volumetrically is the Gibbs surface excess.” Surface excess is an empirical adsorption quantity; it should not be casually treated as the usable hydrogen delivered by an onboard system.

What the 6 wt% ambient-temperature benchmark means
The 6 wt% figure is often repeated without its scope. In the HSCoE decision, it was a materials-basis goal for ambient-temperature storage, not a guarantee that a vehicle carrying a 6 wt% adsorbent would deliver 6 wt% usable hydrogen after adding a vessel and balance of system. The report also assessed whether the binding strength needed for high uptake was physically plausible at practical temperatures.
The report estimated that more than 6 wt% dihydrogen uptake at room temperature and moderate pressure would require binding energies in the approximate range of 15–20 kJ/mol. That is the report’s assessment for the target under discussion, not a universal specification for every future sorbent. Raising binding energy can help retention, but excessive binding can increase the heat and time needed to refill or empty a tank.
“Based on systematic development and testing within the HSCoE and a thorough review of the literature, it was concluded that pure undoped carbon SWNTs did not, and probably cannot, meet the 6 wt % hydrogen-storage goal (on a materials basis) at RT, even at moderate pressures (<100 bar).”
Hydrogen Sorption Center of Excellence, DOE final report, ambient-temperature nanotube go/no-go section, report dated 2010.
The statement should be quoted with its qualifiers: pure, undoped SWNTs; room temperature; a materials-basis goal; and the historical DOE program assessment. Applying it to every modified CNT would overstate what the report said.

Can doping or functionalization change the answer?
Yes, modification can change adsorption behavior, but it also changes the material being evaluated. Researchers have examined metal decoration, heteroatom incorporation, chemical functionalization, composites, and changes to bundle geometry or pore structure. These methods seek more adsorption sites, stronger but reversible interactions, or improved packing density.
The comparison must remain honest. A doped CNT is not a counterexample to a result obtained with pure CNTs unless the material identity, operating conditions, and reporting basis are clearly separated. Added metal also contributes mass, can block pores, may migrate or react during cycling, and can complicate manufacturing and thermal management.
What the 2023 lithium-doped study demonstrates
Erruboyana and Zollo’s 2023 paper in Carbon modeled bundles of SWNTs doped with lithium. Its abstract reports that a modeled bundle with 20% lithium doping exceeded an ultimate DOE gravimetric target at 10 MPa. The same study found that the modeled volumetric improvement remained insufficient for light-duty vehicle onboard storage over the ranges it explored.
That result is computational. It indicates a design direction worth testing, not a measured tank capacity. A simulation does not by itself establish synthesis yield, dopant stability, impurity tolerance, adsorption kinetics, heat rejection, pressure-vessel compatibility, cycle life, or usable hydrogen after system mass is included.

Material capacity versus storage-system capacity
For a practical vehicle or stationary installation, the relevant question is not simply how many grams of hydrogen attach to a gram of CNT powder. Engineers also need to know how much hydrogen can be delivered, how densely the sorbent can be packed, and how much hardware is required to control pressure and heat.

- Usable or deliverable hydrogen: hydrogen available between the minimum and maximum operating pressures, rather than the total adsorbed at a single equilibrium point.
- Volumetric density: hydrogen per unit of tank volume. A lightweight powder with low packing density can perform poorly by volume.
- Thermal management: adsorption releases heat and desorption absorbs it. The vessel needs a way to move that heat without unacceptable temperature swings.
- Refueling and discharge rate: equilibrium capacity is different from how quickly a system can fill or supply a fuel cell.
- Cycle durability: repeated pressure and temperature changes can alter bundles, dopants, pore accessibility, or seals.
- Balance-of-system mass: tanks, liners, insulation, heat exchangers, regulators, sensors, and safety equipment reduce system-level gravimetric performance.
- Safety and containment: hydrogen compatibility, leak control, pressure relief, and crash or fire behavior must be demonstrated for the complete assembly.
The DOE HSCoE decision noted that no known material then met all DOE on-vehicle targets. The reviewed CNT figures therefore belong in the category of materials research results, not as evidence of a commercially ready vehicle tank.
How to compare two CNT hydrogen-storage studies
When two papers appear to disagree, compare them on every axis below before deciding that one has disproved the other:
- Identify the material exactly. Record single-walled or multi-walled tubes, diameter and bundle form when given, purity, catalyst residue, dopants, functional groups, and any composite or support.
- Check the temperature and pressure. Note both adsorption and desorption conditions, equilibration time, pressure range, and whether the measurement is cryogenic, near ambient, or elevated temperature.
- Separate measured from calculated. Mark experimental measurements, first-principles calculations, molecular simulations, and extrapolations as different evidence classes.
- Read the reporting basis. Determine whether the value is gravimetric or volumetric, total uptake or surface excess, and whether the denominator includes only active material or the whole sample.
- Inspect sample quality and accessible area. Surface area, pore volume, open ends, bundle packing, moisture, and impurities can dominate the result.
- Ask what the system would deliver. Look for usable capacity, packing density, thermal control, cycling, vessel mass, and refueling rate rather than stopping at the headline wt%.
DOE’s materials and sorbent guidance treats reliable measurement as a separate technical challenge from designing a high-capacity material. A fair comparison therefore reports enough detail for another laboratory to reproduce the test.
What would have to improve before CNT storage became practical?
A credible CNT storage system would need simultaneous progress rather than one record capacity. The material would need stronger adsorption at useful temperatures without making release impractical, high accessible surface area and pore volume, stable composition during cycling, and enough bulk density to avoid losing performance when powder is packed into a tank.
Manufacturing consistency is equally important. A laboratory sample with an unusually favorable structure is not automatically scalable. Producers would need control over nanotube diameter, length, purity, bundle size, dopant distribution, and residual catalyst. They would also need validated methods for measuring small changes in hydrogen uptake while correcting for buoyancy, leaks, thermal gradients, and instrument drift.
Finally, a system demonstration would have to report the complete operating envelope: fill and discharge rates, heat flow, pressure limits, usable hydrogen, cycle count, safety tests, and the mass and volume of every component. Until those data are available, CNTs should be described as a research candidate rather than a proven replacement for established hydrogen-storage approaches.
Can you buy a proven CNT hydrogen-storage system?
No source reviewed here establishes a consumer CNT hydrogen-storage product or a commercially validated onboard system. CNT powders, dopants, catalysts, and adsorption-measurement equipment may exist as laboratory supplies, but buying a research sample is not the same as buying a certified hydrogen tank. Treat claims that present a single CNT wt% figure as a complete storage solution with caution unless they provide independent measurements and full system-level specifications.

Carbon nanotubes do store some hydrogen by adsorption, especially at cryogenic temperatures. Pure SWNTs, however, show much lower uptake near room temperature and were judged by the DOE HSCoE program unlikely to meet its 6 wt% ambient-temperature materials goal. Doped and functionalized CNTs remain promising research avenues, but simulated or materials-level capacities are not yet proof of a practical, validated storage system.
