Yes—some cars can gain features, refinements, and fixes after delivery through over-the-air (OTA) software updates. But it is not a blanket promise: what can change, which vehicles qualify, whether an update costs extra, and how it installs all depend on the automaker and the exact vehicle.
What can a car update change?
An OTA update sends software to a vehicle without requiring a visit to a service department for that update. Automakers describe updates that add features, refine existing functions, or address quality and connectivity issues. The scope varies by company and eligible vehicle.
- Tesla says its vehicles regularly receive updates that add features and enhance existing ones. Tesla software update guidance
- Ford has described OTA updates as a way to improve quality, capability, and convenience. Its corporate article’s rollout statements are historical, not a current eligibility list. Ford’s account of OTA updates
- GMC lists examples for eligible vehicles including app improvements, connectivity refinements, and expansion of Super Cruise roads. GMC software updates
These are automakers’ descriptions of their own capabilities, not independent evaluations of how much better a vehicle becomes. A software change can affect functions supported by hardware already in the car; it cannot guarantee a feature that requires hardware the vehicle lacks.

Eligibility is specific to make, model year, trim, equipment, and market. A brand’s general OTA capability does not mean every vehicle it sells can receive every type of update. Tesla says update timing is rolling—not simultaneous—and availability depends on vehicle configuration and region. GMC likewise limits its guidance to eligible vehicles. Neither source establishes a universal guarantee that every car will receive every future feature.

Ford’s 2019 announcement said OTA capability was planned for most redesigned U.S. vehicles beginning in 2020. That historical plan should not be treated as a present-day eligibility list. General Motors has reported that more than 4.5 million vehicles could receive OTA vehicle-system updates and that 1.6 million received coordinated updates in the prior year; those are company-reported figures, not a guarantee for a particular vehicle. GM also described a centralized architecture planned to begin with Cadillac ESCALADE IQ in 2028. Its statements about future bandwidth and feature capacity are forward-looking company claims. Before choosing a car, ask the automaker or dealer to confirm in writing which systems on the exact model, year, trim, and market can be updated remotely, and which require a service visit.

Can an update add features or fix a recall?
New or improved features
Some updates add features or refine existing ones, but an update does not necessarily mean a new physical capability. Check whether a feature is supported by the vehicle’s installed hardware, whether the exact vehicle is eligible, and whether access is complimentary or paid. GMC says eligible owners can receive complimentary enhancements and purchase upgrades; that distinction means not every change or feature should be assumed free.

OTA can also be used for some recall remedies. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2025 annual report records vehicles in recalls partially or fully remedied with OTA updates. For recall year 2025, it counts 2,365,332 Ford vehicles and 679,242 Tesla vehicles. These are recall-remedy vehicle counts—not totals of all OTA updates, new features, or proof that every affected vehicle received a benefit. NHTSA annual recall reports

An available general software update is not proof that an open safety recall is complete for your vehicle. Check recall status by VIN and follow the remedy instructions. In one specific Ford/Lincoln recall notice hosted by NHTSA, owners could install the specified software update themselves or have a dealer perform it; that instruction does not describe every recall. What installation involves
Download and installation requirements vary by vehicle. For Tesla, a stable Wi-Fi connection is needed to download an update; the vehicle must be parked during installation and cannot be driven. Some installations can take several hours, and Tesla says a previous software version cannot be restored. GMC says eligible owners can use Wi-Fi or built-in data, then start an update after an in-vehicle notification or schedule it. Follow the vehicle’s own display and manual for the procedure.

How to compare update support before buying
Ask the seller or automaker for specific answers about the vehicle you are considering, rather than relying on a general promise that the brand supports OTA updates.
- Which systems can be updated remotely, and which require dealer service?
- What update types are offered for this model, trim, and market—such as infotainment, connectivity, driver assistance, powertrain, or safety?
- Does the feature require hardware or equipment not included on this vehicle?
- How are updates delivered, and what connection, scheduling, and downtime are required?
- Are the updates or optional features complimentary or paid?
- How long is software support expected to continue, and is any cadence or availability guaranteed?
- For a used car, are there open recalls for its VIN, and has the official remedy been completed?
The available manufacturer and regulator materials do not establish one independent ranking across brands, a universal software-support period, or a predictable update cadence across the industry. They also do not prove that OTA updates extend vehicle life, improve resale value or reliability, or create a financial saving.
