In the UK, repairer choice depends on the wording of your specific motor policy; it is not safe to assume that every insurer lets you use any garage it will pay for. The Financial Ombudsman Service says insurers usually arrange and pay for repairs under most comprehensive policies. One verified example, Aviva, allows a customer-chosen repairer only if it is closer than Aviva’s nearest approved repairer, and that route has conditions.
Which insurers offer a choice of repairer?
The available evidence does not support a reliable, current list of UK insurers that offer unrestricted or optional repairer choice. Policy terms can vary by product, policy year and schedule, so check the documents for your own cover rather than relying on a brand-wide claim.
Aviva’s cited Motor Insurance Policy booklet provides a specific, conditional route: “We can arrange for your vehicle to be taken to a repairer of your choice if it is closer than our nearest approved repairer.” The wording also warns that repairs may be delayed, no courtesy vehicle will be provided in this circumstance, and the excess will increase. The repairer must submit an itemised estimate for approval before work starts. If Aviva and the repairer cannot agree on the cost, Aviva reserves the right to ask for the vehicle to be moved to an approved repairer or to obtain another estimate. Read the cited Aviva Motor Insurance Policy booklet and confirm that its terms match your policy version and schedule.

This is not an unrestricted choice and should not be treated as a term that applies to every Aviva policy. A Financial Ombudsman Service decision records one customer’s dispute about a higher excess for choosing a non-approved repairer; it concerns the wording and circumstances of that individual policy, not a general ruling on every Aviva policy or insurer. What “choice of repairer” can mean in practice
A policy may let you nominate a garage outright, allow it only if a condition is met, or require insurer approval before repairs begin. Under most comprehensive motor policies, insurers usually arrange and pay for repairs, according to the Financial Ombudsman Service’s vehicle-repairs guidance. That general description does not establish that you can use any repairer without conditions.

- Excess: whether choosing a non-approved repairer adds to the excess, and the exact amount for your policy.
- Courtesy vehicle: whether one is included in this situation, and whether eligibility depends on the repairer or policy tier.
- Approval and cost disputes: whether the insurer must approve an itemised estimate before work starts, and what happens if it and the garage cannot agree on the price.
- Timing and logistics: whether repairs may take longer, and who handles vehicle collection and return.
- Repair guarantee: what guarantee applies to work completed by your chosen garage compared with an approved repairer.
- Policy conditions: whether the option changes by product, cover level or the details in your schedule.
How to check your policy before authorising repairs
- Find the right documents. Use the current policy booklet and schedule for your exact insurer product and policy year.
- Search the wording. Look for “repairer of your choice,” “approved repairer,” “non-approved repairer,” “additional excess” and “courtesy car.”
- Identify the condition. Confirm whether you can choose any repairer, must meet a condition such as proximity, or need the insurer to approve an estimate first.
- Ask about the specific claim. Get the insurer to confirm the excess, courtesy-car eligibility, repair guarantee, collection and return, estimate approval and process if repair costs cannot be agreed.
- Keep a record. Save the insurer’s response and the policy documents, and do not authorise work until you understand the applicable terms.
What if you disagree with the insurer about repairs?
If a dispute arises over repair quality or how the claim was handled, the Financial Ombudsman Service says it considers evidence from the consumer, the financial business and relevant third parties. Depending on the circumstances, possible remedies can include further repairs or paying for a repairer chosen by the customer. The outcome is assessed against the evidence and the applicable policy; this is not a blanket right to choose any garage and have the insurer pay. The guidance concerns motor-insurance repair disputes, so do not assume it establishes the same terms for a claim handled by another driver’s insurer.
