If you can’t uninstall an unfamiliar app in Windows 11, first try removing it from Start, Settings, or Control Panel. If uninstalling fails, restart Windows and use Repair or Reset if the app offers those options. An unfamiliar name alone does not prove an app is malware; scan it with Windows Security if it seems suspicious.
Check where the app appears
Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for the app’s displayed name. You can also open Start and look through All apps. If you do not find it in Settings, check Start and try Control Panel before assuming it has been removed or that Windows is broken. Microsoft’s instructions for checking whether an app is installed describe these places to look.
Do not delete a folder or registry entry just because the name is unfamiliar. An app’s identity and whether it can be uninstalled are separate questions; if you suspect it is unsafe, use the security steps below.

Try another Windows uninstall route
Uninstall from Start
- Select Start > All apps.
- Find the app, right-click it, and select Uninstall if that option appears.
Uninstall from Settings
- Select Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the app, select More (the three-dot menu), and choose Uninstall.
- Follow any prompts Windows displays.
Uninstall from Control Panel
- Search for and open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the program and choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change, then follow the prompts.
Microsoft lists these options in its guide to uninstalling or removing apps and programs. Some apps are built into Windows and cannot be uninstalled. If Windows does not offer an Uninstall option, that alone does not mean the installation is broken.

If uninstalling fails or shows an error
- Restart the PC. Then try uninstalling again.
- Try Repair first, then Reset if needed. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s three-dot menu, and open Advanced options if available. Choose Repair; if the problem remains, try Reset. These options are not available for every app. Repair and Reset can affect an app differently, so read any confirmation prompt before proceeding. - Try uninstalling from Settings if you were using another route, and follow any Windows troubleshooting recommendation shown after a failure.
Microsoft’s guidance for programs that will not install or uninstall recommends restarting, trying Repair or Reset where available, and uninstalling through Settings.
If the app may be unwanted or malicious
Use Windows Security rather than treating the problem only as an uninstall error. Microsoft recommends getting the latest security intelligence and running a full Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan. A scan is appropriate when the app seems suspicious; an unfamiliar name by itself does not establish that it is malicious. Microsoft also advises downloading apps from trusted sources and keeping Windows, browsers, and apps up to date.

Know which troubleshooter applies to Windows 11
Microsoft’s page about installation and removal problems includes Windows 11 advice for restarting, repairing or resetting an app, and uninstalling from Settings. However, the downloadable Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter instructions on that page are in a section specifically for Windows 10. The page describes issues that tool can address, including corrupted registry keys and incomplete uninstall data, but does not document it there as a Windows 11 remedy. Do not assume those Windows 10 instructions apply to Windows 11.

Escalate only if the usual steps do not work
If the app still will not uninstall, Microsoft suggests contacting its publisher or considering Reset this PC (keep your files). Resetting Windows is a broader recovery measure, not a routine first fix for one app. Recovery options can result in data loss, so back up important files before proceeding; consult Microsoft’s Windows recovery options guidance before choosing one.
