If changing the WordPress Address or Site Address locked you out, go directly to /wp-login.php, clear the site’s cookies, and then make home and siteurl agree on the complete intended URL. If you cannot reach the login form or it keeps redirecting, temporarily define WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL in wp-config.php, or correct the two rows in the WordPress options table. Those fixes address URL redirects; a separate PHP fatal error requires WordPress Recovery Mode.
Start with the direct login address
Being sent away from /wp-admin/ does not by itself mean the dashboard is broken. WordPress says that visiting /wp-admin/ while logged out redirects to the login page automatically. Open the authentication endpoint directly instead:
https://your-domain.example/wp-login.php
Replace the example with the exact scheme, host, port and path that the site should use. If WordPress is installed in a subdirectory, retain that path, for example https://example.com/blog/wp-login.php.
If the form appears but reloads after you submit it, or you are returned to the login screen without an error, delete cookies for that domain and try again in a private browser window. A cookie created for the old host, HTTP scheme or path can keep an otherwise-correct login from sticking. Do not delete every browser cookie unless necessary; remove the affected site’s cookies first.

Understand what changed: siteurl versus home
WordPress stores two canonical URLs. They often match, but they have different jobs. A mismatch, an old host name, an HTTP/HTTPS disagreement or an incorrect subdirectory can create a redirect loop or send the login form to the wrong place.

Both values should include https:// when HTTPS is the intended scheme, and neither should have a trailing slash. For example, use https://example.com, not example.com/ or https://example.com/. If the site is deliberately served from a subdirectory, include that directory in both values where appropriate and still omit the final slash.
Choose the recovery method that matches your access
Use the least invasive method that fits the symptom. A single-row correction is different from replacing old URLs throughout a database, and neither fixes a plugin that is producing a fatal PHP error.

Step 1: Test the login endpoint and clear stale cookies
- Open the intended URL followed by
/wp-login.php. Use the final HTTPS host and any required installation path. - Submit a known administrator login. If the form returns to itself, clear cookies and site data for that host.
- Retry in a private window. This distinguishes a browser cookie problem from a server-side redirect.
- After signing in, open
/wp-admin/from the same host and scheme. If it immediately changes to another domain, continue with the configuration or database steps below.
Do not diagnose a normal logged-out redirect from /wp-admin/ as a failure: WordPress intentionally sends unauthenticated requests to the login form. The problem is the destination being wrong, looping, or refusing to preserve the authenticated session.
Step 2: Temporarily force the intended URLs in wp-config.php
When you can edit the site’s files but cannot yet repair the database, add these definitions above the line that says to stop editing:

If the public address and the core-file address are intentionally different, set WP_HOME to the public address and WP_SITEURL to the core installation address rather than blindly making them identical.
Save the file, then revisit /wp-login.php. These constants override the values read from the database for WordPress requests, so they can restore a usable login while the stored rows still contain the old URL. They do not rewrite those rows. Removing the constants later can therefore make WordPress revert to the old database values and appear to “break again.” Treat this as a recovery override, not the final data migration.
Keep the PHP syntax exactly as shown: quotes around the URL, a semicolon at the end of each definition, and no trailing slash in the URL. Make a copy of the original file before editing. If a syntax mistake produces a blank page or PHP error, restore that copy or correct the malformed line through the same file-access method.
Look for an old RELOCATE definition while you are in the file. WordPress documentation warns that leaving RELOCATE in wp-config.php is insecure because, in some configurations, an attacker could change the site URL. Remove that temporary setting once it is no longer needed.
Step 3: Correct the database’s home and siteurl rows
Once you can reach a database tool, make the database authoritative. Back up the database before changing anything; a mistaken host, path or table can affect every request.

- Open the database used by this WordPress installation in phpMyAdmin, Adminer or the equivalent tool supplied by your host.
- Find the WordPress options table. Its name is often
wp_options, but the prefix can be different, such asabc_options. Use the prefix shown inwp-config.php; do not assume it iswp_. - Filter the
option_namecolumn for exactlysiteurlandhome. - Edit each row’s
option_valueto the intended full URL, includinghttps://when HTTPS is canonical and excluding the trailing slash. - Save both rows, then clear browser, plugin and CDN caches before testing a fresh private-browser session.
A typical pair for a root installation is:

For a subdirectory installation, the value might instead be https://example.com/blog. The correct value depends on where the site is actually served; do not add or remove a path merely to make the two strings look alike.
If you added WP_HOME or WP_SITEURL earlier, leave them in place while testing the database correction. Once the database contains the correct values and login works, remove those temporary definitions and test again. This confirms that the stored settings, rather than the override, are now supplying the address.
Step 4: Replace old URLs across the site with WP-CLI
Changing two options fixes the canonical addresses, but it does not automatically rewrite URLs stored in posts, menus, widgets, serialized settings or plugin data. For a broader migration, use the WordPress-aware WP-CLI command rather than a blind SQL replacement so serialized values can be handled correctly.
From the WordPress installation directory, run a dry run first:
wp search-replace 'https://old.example' 'https://example.com' --dry-runReview the reported tables and replacement counts. Check that the old and new values include the right scheme, host and path. If the preview is correct and you have a current database backup, run the same command without --dry-run:

wp search-replace 'https://old.example' 'https://example.com'Use this broader operation only when old URLs genuinely remain beyond home and siteurl. A single-row edit is safer for a simple login redirect. A replacement across every stored record can alter content or plugin settings that intentionally reference another domain, so inspect the dry-run output instead of accepting a large change blindly.
After the replacement, clear caches and test links, media, forms and administrator screens. If the site uses a different old path, include that path in the search string and choose the replacement path deliberately; changing only the host while leaving an obsolete directory can produce another round of redirects.
Step 5: Use Recovery Mode only for a fatal PHP error
WordPress Recovery Mode is a separate recovery path from correcting URL values. It was introduced in WordPress 5.2 and can provide a safe login session when a plugin, theme or custom code causes a fatal PHP error, without requiring FTP or direct code editing in some cases.

Once inside the protected session, deactivate or repair the named plugin, theme or custom code, then test the site normally. Recovery Mode will not fix a redirect to the wrong domain, an incorrect home value or a cookie loop. If the visible symptom is a PHP fatal error, solve that component first; if it is a redirect, follow the URL recovery steps instead.
Verify the repair after login returns
Do not stop at a successful password submission. Confirm that the address is correct throughout the request chain.

- Remove temporary
WP_HOMEandWP_SITEURLdefinitions after the database holds the intended values. - Open the front end and
/wp-admin/in a fresh private-browser session. - Confirm that links, forms, media and dashboard assets use the intended host, path and HTTPS scheme.
- Clear browser data for the site, then purge WordPress plugin caches and any CDN or reverse-proxy cache.
- Test a normal administrator login after the private-window test succeeds.
- Check the browser’s final URL after each redirect. A change from HTTPS to HTTP, a second hostname or an added directory identifies the layer still supplying the wrong value.
Troubleshoot the remaining symptoms
The login keeps redirecting to the old domain
Recheck both options-table rows and any WP_HOME or WP_SITEURL definitions. A temporary constant wins over the database, so an old constant can make a correct database edit appear ineffective. Also inspect host-level redirects in Nginx or Apache, CDN rules and reverse-proxy configuration. WordPress can be correct while the web server sends every request to the former host.
The form reloads and never keeps the login session
Clear cookies for the affected host and retry privately. Then compare the scheme and host in the login page, the submitted form and the final dashboard URL. Mixed HTTP/HTTPS values, a proxy that does not pass the original HTTPS state, or a redirect between two hostnames can invalidate the authentication cookie even when the password is correct.

The site or dashboard returns a 404 after the URL edit
Verify the installation path in siteurl and the public path in home. A root installation should not acquire a directory merely because the old site used one, and a subdirectory installation should not lose its directory. Once the values are correct, clear caches and test the direct /wp-login.php path that matches the installation.
The front end works but dashboard links point elsewhere
That pattern usually means the public address and core-file address are not aligned with the intended deployment. Compare home, siteurl, WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL as a set, including scheme and path. Correct the database rows, remove stale overrides, and then test both the front end and administrator links from a new session.
Old links remain after correcting the two rows
The two canonical options do not cover every URL stored in content or plugin data. Use WP-CLI’s dry-run search-and-replace workflow for a deliberate site-wide migration, and review the affected tables before committing it. Do not use a broad replacement when the only problem is a single wrong canonical option.
The change works briefly, then reverts
Check whether a deployment script, environment configuration, hosting panel or persistent wp-config.php override writes the old value back. Remove obsolete recovery constants only after confirming the database values, and inspect caching layers that may continue serving redirects generated before the repair.
Prevent the next URL lockout
- Back up both files and the database before changing a production URL.
- Perform the change on a staging copy first, including the final HTTPS certificate, host and subdirectory path.
- Record the old and new values for
home,siteurl,WP_HOMEandWP_SITEURLso you can reverse the change accurately. - Use a dry run before any WP-CLI replacement that touches many tables.
- Plan cache purges and a private-window verification as part of the change, not as an afterthought.
- Remove temporary recovery constants and any
RELOCATEsetting when the repair is complete.
The durable fix is consistency: the database, configuration file, web server, proxy and caches must all agree on one intended scheme, host and path. When they do, /wp-login.php authenticates normally and /wp-admin/ performs its expected redirect for logged-out visitors.
