Most Pixelmon connection failures come from one of four mismatches: the Minecraft version, Pixelmon version, mod loader, or required mods. A timeout or refusal is usually a reachability problem instead, while a crash or endless negotiating screen points to Java, memory, or a client-side mod. Read the exact error first, then work through the checks below in that order.
Start with the exact error
Do not delete your instance or reinstall every mod before identifying the failure. The wording on the disconnect screen usually tells you which branch to test first.

Pixelmon’s server guidance states that a client using a different Pixelmon version receives a Mod Rejection error and cannot join. That message is not fixed by changing Wi-Fi settings; it requires a matching game stack.
Match the supported Minecraft and Pixelmon stack
Use a Java Edition profile built for the server’s exact combination. The ranges below are the combinations listed in Pixelmon’s server guide, but a range does not mean that every release in it can join every server. The client must use the precise Pixelmon release selected by that server.

Verify the profile before launching
- Ask the server owner for the Minecraft version, exact Pixelmon version, loader name and build, and the required modpack or mod list.
- In your launcher, select a Java Edition installation that uses that Minecraft version. Do not launch a vanilla profile and then paste the server address into it.
- For Pixelmon 9.3.0 or newer, select NeoForge, not Forge. For the 9.1.x and 9.2.x combinations listed above, use the loader supplied with the server pack.
- Launch once with the correct profile, then confirm the title screen or profile details show the expected loader and game version before connecting.
Other Minecraft editions cannot run Forge. A Bedrock or other non-Java installation therefore cannot be converted into a Pixelmon client simply by copying the server address.
Do not treat a release range as permission to guess
For example, a server running Pixelmon 9.2.7 on Minecraft 1.20.2 does not accept every 9.2.x file. The range identifies releases that the guide supports on that Minecraft version; the server’s actual jar remains authoritative. Ask for the exact file name or pack version, and check the loader build shown in the launcher rather than relying on a profile name such as “Pixelmon 1.20.2.”
Install the complete server mod set
Pixelmon itself is only one part of a modded server. The loader build, required libraries, sidemods, and their versions must also agree. A missing dependency can produce the same sort of rejection as an incorrect Pixelmon file.
Preferred method: use the supplied pack
- Download the server owner’s official modpack, launcher instance, or exported pack.
- Import it as a new instance rather than mixing its files into an older Pixelmon installation.
- Do not add performance, map, cosmetic, or utility mods until you have successfully joined once.
- When the owner updates the pack, replace the instance or update the files exactly as instructed; do not keep old jars merely because their names look similar.
When you must compare files manually
Compare the client and server mod lists, including file versions and the loader build. The server owner can provide the authoritative list; a client cannot discover every required server-side dependency from the address alone. Remove client-only additions that alter networking, registries, or channel negotiation, then test again. Keep a copy of your original instance so that you can restore it if a sidemod was not the cause.
An official or exported pack improves reproducibility because everyone receives the same files. Manual selection offers customization, but every extra file creates another opportunity for a missing dependency, an incompatible version, or a different loader.
A clean-instance comparison
If two installations have drifted apart, create a fresh instance from the owner’s pack and test it before repairing the old one. This separates a bad jar or leftover configuration from a server-side problem. Record the old instance’s mod list first, then add optional files back in small groups only after the clean instance joins successfully. Reintroduce one category at a time—performance, maps, cosmetics, then utilities—so a failure has a narrow list of possible causes.
Do not rename a jar to make it appear compatible, copy only the Pixelmon jar while omitting libraries, or leave two releases of the same mod in the folder. Similar filenames can represent different builds, and duplicate jars can make the loader stop before the connection attempt.

Use the Java version Pixelmon expects
Pixelmon’s server documentation specifies Java by release family. A correct mod list can still fail if the launcher or server starts it with the wrong Java major version.

Check the client
Open the installation or instance settings in your launcher and inspect the Java executable selected for that profile. If it points to an older bundled runtime, choose an installation of the major version required by the Pixelmon release. Restart the launcher after changing it, then launch the same profile again so the log records the new runtime.
Check the server
The server start script or hosting panel must use the same required Java major version. If you do not control the host, ask the administrator to verify it. A client cannot correct a server process that is running under an unsupported runtime.
Memory and crash evidence
Pixelmon’s troubleshooting guidance notes that additional memory may be needed and directs users to crash-report guidance. Increase or decrease the allocation only after checking the report and the launcher settings; assigning memory blindly can make a system less stable. A crash report or latest log is more useful than repeatedly reinstalling the pack because it identifies the mod or phase that failed.
Change memory in one direction at a time and test again. If the game reaches the multiplayer menu but fails only while joining, memory is less likely to be the primary cause than a rejected mod or unreachable host. If it crashes during startup or registry loading, Java, allocation, and a recently added sidemod deserve priority.
Separate a network failure from a mod failure
For a timeout or refusal, first establish whether your computer can reach the host. Minecraft Help’s first-line advice is to check the network connection and server status.
Confirm the host and address
- Ask the owner whether the server process is running and whether another player can join.
- Copy the address and port exactly. A changed port, an extra space, or an old dynamic address can make a healthy server appear offline.
- Determine whether the server is local-network-only. Pixelmon’s local-hosting guidance says local hosting generally allows only people on the same local network to connect.
- If it is self-hosted for remote players, the owner must configure the operating-system firewall and router port forwarding for the listening port. The owner should also verify that the router and internet provider permit inbound connections.
Test the address from the same network and, if possible, ask a player outside that network to try. A LAN address can work for the host while remaining unreachable from the internet. Conversely, a remote address may fail for everyone if the process is stopped or the forwarded port changed.

Use a wired test to isolate Wi-Fi
For an intermittent timeout or disconnect, test one join over Ethernet. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a simple way to remove wireless interference, roaming, and weak-signal drops from the test. If Ethernet works and Wi-Fi does not, investigate the wireless network; the cable will not fix a wrong Pixelmon version, missing mod, or incorrect loader.
Know what a server owner can and cannot fix
If every player is rejected with Mod Rejection, the owner should publish one exact pack and version rather than asking each player to guess. If only you time out while others join, investigate your route, firewall, or local network. If everyone times out, the host, port, forwarding, or server process is the more probable boundary.
A timeout is not evidence that reinstalling Pixelmon will help. Conversely, a successful ping or a visible server listing does not prove the mod handshake will pass. Reachability gets you to the server; the matching loader and mod channels get you through the join process.
Choose an appropriate hosting boundary
Local hosting and managed hosting solve different problems. Pixelmon’s guide describes local hosting as generally LAN-only and recommends paid hosting for larger groups because performance, stability, and safety requirements increase.

Before moving a world, confirm that the host supports the exact Minecraft version, loader, Java runtime, Pixelmon release, and sidemods you use. Hosting cannot repair an incompatible client pack. Ask whether the provider permits the required Java major version and whether you can upload the server’s exact loader and mod files. A cheaper plan that cannot run the needed stack is not a useful comparison.
Handle authentication errors without changing mods
A message such as Failed to log in is different from Mod Rejection. Start with the account and service path:
- Sign out of the official launcher completely and sign back in.
- Confirm that the account can join another Java Edition server. This distinguishes an account or service problem from one Pixelmon server’s configuration.
- Check for a broader authentication-service outage and wait if the service is unavailable.
- Only after authentication works elsewhere should you return to the Pixelmon profile and recheck its version and loader.
There is no verified Pixelmon-specific fix in the guidance that makes a particular DNS, IPv6, or firewall change universally effective. Treat those as environment-specific network troubleshooting, not a guaranteed solution.

Fix negotiating stalls and client crashes
Read the newest log
Open the instance’s latest client log and the newest crash report immediately after the failed attempt. Note the first error mentioning a mod, registry, channel, Java exception, or out-of-memory condition. The final line often describes where the process stopped, but the earlier “caused by” section is usually more diagnostic.
Remove recent sidemods methodically
- Close the game and make a backup of the instance.
- Remove one recently added sidemod, then launch and attempt the join.
- If the connection works, keep that file out and check its compatibility with the server’s pack.
- If it does not, restore the file and test the next recent addition.
Do not remove Pixelmon or the loader as a first experiment; doing so destroys the very stack you need to compare. Also avoid changing Java, memory, loader, and mods simultaneously. A clean test is useful only when you know what changed between attempts.
Review memory allocation
If loading consistently fails before the multiplayer screen, compare the allocation with the launcher and crash-report guidance. An undersized allocation can cause crashes during mod initialization, while an excessive allocation can leave too little memory for the operating system. Change one setting at a time and record the result.
Common mistakes that prolong the diagnosis
- Using a vanilla profile: a server address does not install Forge, NeoForge, Pixelmon, or dependencies.
- Choosing the newest release automatically: the newest Pixelmon file may not be the one the server runs.
- Mixing old and new folders: stale jars and duplicate versions can create rejection or startup errors.
- Blaming Wi-Fi for Mod Rejection: wireless quality cannot make two different mod channels match.
- Changing several variables at once: you lose the evidence needed to identify the actual cause.
- Sending only a screenshot: include versions, loader build, Java version, host type, and logs so support can reproduce the failure.
What to send when you need support
A support request that contains only “I cannot join” forces the owner or developer to repeat the same checks. Include:
- The exact disconnect text or a screenshot transcribed into the message.
- Minecraft version, exact Pixelmon version, loader name and build, and Java major version.
- The server address or host type, with the port if it is not the default.
- Whether the server is LAN-only, self-hosted for remote access, or managed hosting.
- The client mod list and the server’s intended mod list, including versions.
- The latest client log and crash report, plus the relevant server log if you administer the server.
- What changed immediately before the failure, such as a Pixelmon update, loader update, or newly installed sidemod.
Pixelmon directs unresolved server issues to its Discord #server-support channel and directs sidemod-specific problems to the relevant sidemod bug tracker. Post the evidence there instead of uploading an unlabelled collection of old logs.
A short recovery order
- Read the exact error and classify it as stack, network, authentication, or client health.
- Match the Minecraft version, exact Pixelmon release, loader, and Java major version to the server.
- Install the official or exported pack, then compare every required mod and loader build.
- For a timeout or refusal, verify server status, address, port, LAN boundary, firewall, and forwarding; test Ethernet once if Wi-Fi is suspect.
- For a crash or negotiating stall, inspect logs and memory settings and remove sidemods one at a time.
- Escalate with complete version, configuration, and log evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Pixelmon say Mod Rejection?
The client and server do not have the same required stack. Match the exact Minecraft version, Pixelmon release, loader and build, and every required mod. Pixelmon specifically says a different Pixelmon version prevents the join.
Can I join a Pixelmon server from Bedrock Edition?
No. Pixelmon requires a Java Edition profile with the appropriate Forge or NeoForge loader. Copying the address into a Bedrock or vanilla profile does not install the required stack.

Which Java version does Pixelmon need?
Use Java 8 before Pixelmon 9.2.0, Java 17 for 9.2.0 through 9.2.10, and Java 21 for 9.3.0 or newer. The server process must use the matching major version too.
