When WordPress asks for FTP credentials during a theme installation, the theme is usually not the problem. WordPress cannot write to the site’s filesystem directly, or the FTP/SFTP connection is aimed at the wrong WordPress directory. Check the active installation path, confirm ownership and write access to wp-content, then use valid hosting credentials or upload the extracted theme folder manually to /wp-content/themes/.
This guide takes you from the least disruptive checks to manual installation and host-level repair, while avoiding the unsafe “make everything writable” advice that often creates a bigger security problem.
What the WordPress FTP error actually means
WordPress uses its Filesystem API whenever it needs to create, change, or remove files. A normal dashboard theme installation requires WordPress to write the uploaded package into the site’s filesystem. If the web-server process can write directly, the installation can proceed without asking you for anything. If direct writing is unavailable or the server’s file owner does not match the user running PHP, WordPress switches to another transport and displays a form for FTP or SSH details.
That behavior is an access diagnostic, not a design or compatibility diagnosis. The prompt commonly appears because:

- The PHP process cannot write to
wp-contentor its subdirectories. - Files were uploaded by a different account, leaving ownership or group settings that do not match the web server’s execution model.
- The FTP user can log in but starts in a directory that is not the WordPress installation serving your domain.
- The host expects SFTP or a particular port and path rather than ordinary FTP.
- The theme ZIP or extracted folder is being handled in the wrong location.
WordPress can detect when the user writing files will not match the user that owns them and can switch to FTP or a similar method. That is why the credential form can appear even though the dashboard itself works normally.
Use this order of operations
Do the checks in sequence. Each step rules out a different failure, and changing permissions before confirming the path can make troubleshooting harder.

- Confirm the active site’s root. Hosts use different web-root layouts. Make sure the FTP or file-manager session is connected to the WordPress installation that serves the domain, then locate
/wp-content/themes/. - Check ownership and write access. WordPress needs to write to
wp-content. The correct owner and group depend on how PHP runs on that host and on which account originally uploaded the files. - Use the host’s exact credentials. Enter the supplied username, password, host, port, and remote path. If SFTP is available, prefer it for the transfer.
- Install manually if the dashboard still cannot write. Extract the ZIP on your computer and upload the resulting theme folder into
/wp-content/themes/with an FTP client or the host’s file manager. - Change filesystem settings only with host-specific information. Settings such as
FS_METHOD,FTP_BASE, andFTP_CONTENT_DIRdescribe a real server layout; guessing them can point WordPress at the wrong directory.
Check the theme ZIP before changing the server
Use an actual WordPress theme package
Start with a package from the WordPress Theme Directory or the theme vendor. A vendor download may contain documentation, license files, or more than one ZIP. In Appearance > Themes > Add New, upload the theme ZIP itself rather than a larger download bundle.
If the upload fails immediately, download the package again and retry. A damaged or incomplete archive is a package problem; an FTP credential prompt is generally a filesystem-access problem. Treat those as separate tests instead of repeatedly changing server permissions for a bad archive.
Do not upload the outer download bundle
For manual installation, extract the theme ZIP locally first. The folder you upload should be the extracted theme folder, not the original ZIP and not a parent folder containing several unrelated files. Keep the original archive until the theme is confirmed in the dashboard, so you have a clean copy for another attempt.
Find the WordPress installation that serves the site
A correct FTP login can still fail if it opens in the wrong web root. Shared hosting often contains several domains, staging copies, or nested WordPress installations. The destination must belong to the site you are editing, not merely a directory with a familiar name.

Verify from the hosting side
Use the hosting control panel or file manager to identify the document root assigned to the domain. If the host lists several applications, select the one mapped to the domain where you want the theme. Then browse to its wp-content directory and open themes.
Verify from the WordPress side
Log in to the same dashboard at the domain you intend to change. The site’s installation directory is the one that contains that dashboard’s WordPress files and its wp-content directory. If you administer multiple sites, keep the domain and the remote path visible while connecting so you do not upload a theme to a sibling installation.
Recognize a path mismatch
A path error often looks like a credential failure: the connection succeeds, but WordPress cannot find or create the expected directory. If you can browse files but do not see the active site’s wp-content/themes, stop and ask the host for the document root rather than creating a new directory with a similar name.
Check ownership and write access safely
WordPress needs write access to wp-content for dashboard installations. Ownership is separate from the permission bits you see in a file manager. The account that uploaded files may differ from the account under which PHP executes, and that mismatch is a common reason direct installation is refused.

Why ownership matters
The web server must be able to create the temporary upload, unpack the archive, and place the theme in wp-content/themes. If the directory is owned by a different account or group and does not grant the PHP process write access, WordPress cannot complete those operations. An FTP user may still be able to log in and browse, because FTP access and PHP write access are not the same permission.
Ask the host for the intended ownership model
Hosts run PHP in different ways. Some use the account that owns the site; others use a separate web-server or application user. Tell support the exact error, the domain, and the path you believe is the active WordPress root. Ask them to confirm the owner and group for wp-content and to restore the permissions expected by their platform.

Do not make every file or directory world-writable as a shortcut. Broad permissions can expose configuration and content to other processes on the server, and they do not correct an incorrect owner. A host can repair ownership without weakening the entire installation.
Test the narrowest location first
The relevant test is whether WordPress can write where the operation occurs. Check wp-content and, for a manual upload, wp-content/themes. If other WordPress operations already create uploads or updates successfully, mention that to support; it helps distinguish a theme-path problem from a site-wide ownership problem.

Enter FTP or SFTP credentials correctly
The credential form asks for connection details supplied by the hosting provider. Use the values exactly as issued for this site:
- Username: the FTP or SSH account authorized for the WordPress files.
- Password: the password for that account, not necessarily the WordPress administrator password.
- Host: the hostname supplied by the provider.
- Port: the provider’s FTP or SFTP port.
- Path: the remote directory that leads to this installation’s WordPress files.
If a host offers SFTP, choose it. SFTP uses encrypted credentials and data in transit, unlike an unencrypted FTP transfer. The account, host, port, and path still have to match the host’s instructions; encryption does not fix a wrong directory or an account without write access.
Do not reuse unrelated credentials
A hosting-panel login, database password, WordPress administrator password, and FTP account can all be different. Repeatedly entering the dashboard password will not help if the host created a separate file-transfer account. Contact the host if you do not know which account has access to the site’s document root.
Save credentials only where appropriate
If you are working on a shared computer, do not save the password in an FTP client or browser prompt. Remove temporary credentials after the upload and use the host’s account-management tools to rotate a password that may have been exposed.

Install the theme manually with FTP or a hosting file manager
Manual upload is the documented fallback when the dashboard installer cannot write files. WordPress documentation describes this process as requiring an FTP client and extracted theme files.
- Download the theme ZIP from the WordPress Theme Directory or the theme vendor.
- Extract the ZIP locally. Keep the extracted theme folder intact.
- Connect to the correct site. Use the host, username, password, port, and path supplied for the WordPress installation.
- Open the active installation’s directory and browse to
/wp-content/themes/. - Upload the extracted theme folder into that directory. Do not place it beside
wp-contentor inside an unrelated domain’s folder. - Wait for the transfer to finish. A partial upload can leave an incomplete theme that appears in the dashboard but fails when activated.
- Return to the dashboard and open Appearance > Themes.
- Confirm the theme appears, then activate it from that screen.
If the theme does not appear after a completed transfer, recheck the remote path first. A successful FTP transfer to the wrong WordPress installation produces no useful change in the dashboard you are viewing.

Understand the WordPress filesystem settings
WordPress documents settings including FS_METHOD, FTP_BASE, and FTP_CONTENT_DIR. They control how WordPress chooses a filesystem method and where it expects the installation and content directories to be. These values are not universal constants: the correct values depend on the host’s actual filesystem layout and PHP execution model.
When a setting may be relevant
A host may direct you to use a specific filesystem method when direct writes are known to be unavailable, or provide the absolute paths needed for the FTP base and content directory. Apply those instructions only after the host confirms the paths and transport.

Why guessing can make the outage worse
Forcing a method or entering a plausible-looking path can send WordPress to a different installation, cause it to request credentials on every update, or make an existing working method fail. Before changing configuration, record the current values and ask the host which setting matches its platform.
Undo an unsuccessful change
If the FTP prompt began after a configuration edit, revert that edit using a known-good backup or the host’s documented recovery process, then retest the dashboard. Do not stack several guessed settings; one confirmed path and one confirmed transport are easier to diagnose than multiple simultaneous changes.

Troubleshoot the common failure messages
“Could not create directory”
This message points to a write or path problem. Confirm that WordPress is using the active installation, that wp-content and wp-content/themes are writable by the expected PHP user, and that the account has enough access to create a directory there. If the path and ownership are correct, provide the host with the exact message and ask for a server-side check.
The credentials are rejected
Verify that you selected the right transport, host, and port and that the username is a file-transfer account. An SFTP account may not work on an FTP endpoint, and a valid account may still be denied if the remote path is outside its permitted directory. Ask the provider for a fresh set of connection details rather than guessing ports.
The connection works but the theme is missing
Browse the remote files and confirm that you are inside the WordPress installation serving the domain. Then check that the extracted folder is directly under wp-content/themes. If you uploaded it to a sibling domain, staging copy, or parent directory, move it to the active site’s path.
The theme appears but activation fails
First confirm that the transfer completed without errors and that the folder is the one produced by extracting the vendor’s theme ZIP. If activation still fails, stop changing FTP settings: the remaining issue may be inside the theme package or a WordPress compatibility requirement, not filesystem transport. Preserve the error text when contacting the theme vendor or host.
The dashboard asks for FTP on every update
Recurring prompts usually indicate that direct writes remain unavailable or that ownership still does not match the PHP execution user. A one-time manual upload does not repair that underlying condition. Ask the host to align ownership and write access for the WordPress content directories, or to provide the supported filesystem configuration for the account.
When to involve your hosting provider
Contact the host when you cannot identify the document root, do not have a working FTP/SFTP account, or lack permission to change ownership. The provider controls the server user, group, PHP execution model, filesystem paths, and available transfer services. Give support enough detail to act quickly:
- The domain and whether it is production or staging.
- The exact dashboard error, including “Could not create directory” if shown.
- The path you believe contains
wp-content/themes. - Whether FTP, SFTP, or the hosting file manager connects successfully.
- Whether uploads, updates, or other WordPress file operations work.
- The approximate time of the failed attempt and the theme package source.
Request confirmation of the correct owner and group, the intended write permissions for wp-content, the document root, and the supported FTP/SFTP credentials. This gives the host a concrete ownership and path problem to solve instead of a vague request to “fix WordPress.”
Security checks after the theme is installed
- Prefer SFTP when the host supports it, because it encrypts credentials and transferred data in transit.
- Use a file-transfer account limited to the site when the host offers that option.
- Remove saved credentials from shared computers and rotate a password if it was exposed.
- Do not leave the entire site world-writable to avoid a single installation error.
- Confirm that the uploaded folder belongs to the correct WordPress installation before activating it.
- Keep the original ZIP until activation succeeds, then store or delete it according to your normal backup policy.
A final diagnostic checklist
- The ZIP came from the WordPress Theme Directory or the theme vendor.
- The dashboard site and the remote directory refer to the same domain and installation.
/wp-content/themes/is the destination for the extracted theme folder.- The host has confirmed the expected owner and group for the content directory.
- The file-transfer username, password, host, port, and path are the provider’s values.
- SFTP is selected when the provider supports it.
- The manual transfer completed fully before activation was attempted.
- No broad, unsafe permission change was used as a workaround.
- Any
FS_METHOD,FTP_BASE, orFTP_CONTENT_DIRchange came from host-specific guidance.
An FTP prompt is therefore best treated as a filesystem and path investigation. Once the active WordPress root is confirmed, ownership matches the server’s execution model, and the transfer account points to the correct directory, the theme can be installed either through the dashboard or by uploading its extracted folder manually.
