When WordPress cannot install or update a plugin, the cause is usually one of seven layers: account access, an invalid or incompatible package, file ownership and permissions, network connectivity, a plugin conflict, cron or host policy, or a stale maintenance-mode file. Read the exact error first, make a backup, check Tools > Site Health, and then test the layer that matches the symptom. Do not start by making every file writable or repeatedly retrying a failed update.
Start with a safe diagnosis
An installation failure and an update failure can look similar in the dashboard but require different repairs. An upload may contain the wrong ZIP structure, while an update may fail because the web server cannot write to an existing plugin directory. A timeout may indicate memory pressure or a network problem rather than a bad plugin.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors1. Read the complete error
Copy the wording before dismissing it. “Could not create directory,” “files could not be copied,” and an FTP-credential prompt point toward filesystem access. “Download failed” or a name-lookup timeout points toward outbound networking or DNS. A fatal error, blank page, or request timeout after activation suggests compatibility, a conflict, or insufficient resources.
2. Back up before changing files
Make a current backup of the database and wp-content, including uploads, plugins, themes, and any custom code. WordPress.org’s Manage Plugins guidance says to have a current backup before updating plugins. A backup gives you a rollback if a reinstall removes a customized file or an update exposes a PHP incompatibility.

3. Check Site Health and access
Open Tools > Site Health and review both the Status and Info tabs. Look for loopback-request failures, scheduled-event or cron errors, blocked HTTP requests, PHP-version warnings, and filesystem or REST-API problems. Confirm that you are signed in to the intended site and that your account has the administrator capability required to manage plugins.
4. Record the environment
Note the WordPress version, PHP version, hosting arrangement, plugin version being installed, and whether the site is WordPress.com or self-hosted. These details determine which fixes are available and help a host or plugin author reproduce the fault.

Account role, plan, and policy restrictions
WordPress.com sites
On WordPress.com, plugin installation depends on the site’s plan and the permissions assigned to the signed-in account. WordPress.com documents permissions, incompatible plugins, incorrect plan information, and other site errors as possible reasons installation is unavailable. Verify the site address and plan in the account dashboard, then confirm that the current user is allowed to install plugins.
Self-hosted sites
On a self-hosted installation, the user normally needs the administrator capability to install or update plugins. A role-management plugin, a security hardening configuration, or a managed host may deliberately remove that capability. Test with a known administrator account and review any role or policy changes made recently.
When the controls are missing
If plugin auto-update controls or installation controls disappeared after a migration, inspect wp-config.php and the host’s deployment policy. This constant disables plugin and theme installation and update functions in the administration area:

Check the uploaded archive
The Plugins upload form expects one ZIP archive containing the plugin’s files. A common mistake is uploading a ZIP that contains another ZIP, a documentation folder, or several unrelated top-level folders. Open the archive locally: it should normally contain a single plugin directory with the main PHP file and supporting files inside it. Re-download the package from the official WordPress plugin directory or the plugin developer, and do not install a package whose origin you cannot verify.
Check WordPress and PHP requirements
Read the plugin’s stated minimum WordPress and PHP versions, tested WordPress version, and dependency notes. An older PHP runtime can cause an update to install successfully but fail when activated. Conversely, a plugin that requires a newer WordPress version may be rejected or produce a fatal error. Resolve the platform requirement before repeating the upload.
Handle an existing damaged copy
If WordPress says the destination directory already exists, or if the installed copy is visibly incomplete, back up first. Using the host file manager or SFTP, rename the existing directory rather than deleting it immediately. For example, append -old to the directory name. Reinstall the clean package, test the site, and retain the renamed copy until you know that custom settings or files are not needed. Never overwrite a customized plugin without preserving it.
Filesystem ownership and write permissions
Why the FTP prompt appears
WordPress prefers to write updates directly through PHP. If the web-server process cannot create or modify the required files, it falls back to asking for FTP credentials. The prompt is a symptom of unavailable direct writes, not proof that entering a password will solve the problem. Credentials can also fail when the server disallows the requested protocol or the account lacks access to the WordPress directory.

WordPress’s hardening guidance states: “When you tell WordPress to perform an automatic update, all file operations are performed as the user that owns the files.” In practice, a migration performed by one system user and updates attempted by another can leave a mixture of owners. The result is intermittent success: one directory updates while another returns “could not create directory.”
Inspect before changing permissions
- Use the hosting control panel, SFTP client, or an administrator shell to inspect the owner and group of
wp-content,wp-content/plugins, and the temporary upgrade directory. - Check whether those directories are writable by the account that runs PHP, without making unrelated site files writable.
- Look for a read-only deployment, immutable files, disk-quota exhaustion, or a security module that blocks writes.
- Check the PHP error log and web-server log for the exact path that failed.
Repair with least privilege
Use the host’s documented ownership and permission procedure, or have the host correct it. The objective is consistent ownership by the intended deployment or web-server user and directory permissions that allow required writes while denying unnecessary access. Do not apply a blanket world-writable mode to the entire WordPress tree; it increases the impact of a compromised process and often masks the underlying ownership error.
After the owner and permissions are corrected, retry one plugin update. If it works, confirm that the same account owns the other WordPress directories and that future deployments will not recreate the mismatch.
Network, DNS, and download failures
Dashboard updates must download a package from WordPress.org or the plugin vendor before extracting it. WordPress’s Dashboard Updates documentation records “Download failed” messages and name-lookup timeouts. These occur when the server cannot resolve DNS, make outbound HTTPS connections, validate certificates, or pass through a firewall or web-application firewall.
Checks for a host administrator
- Confirm that the server can resolve the relevant hostname using its configured DNS resolvers.
- Confirm outbound HTTPS access and that a firewall, proxy, or WAF is not blocking the request.
- Check whether a recently changed DNS record, proxy, or security rule affects only the web server rather than your local computer.
- Review the server clock and certificate errors; an incorrect clock can make valid HTTPS certificates appear expired or not yet valid.
- Check disk space and the PHP temporary directory, because a download can fail while being written locally.
Retry only after the network condition is corrected. Repeated retries do not repair DNS or an egress firewall and can leave partial temporary files.

Plugin conflicts, PHP errors, and resource limits
A plugin update can expose a conflict with another plugin, the active theme, the PHP runtime, or a host limit. The common-errors handbook identifies timeouts when a server cannot manage the work, particularly under restricted memory, and recommends deactivating plugins to isolate the cause.
Use a controlled conflict test
- Schedule a maintenance window and take a backup.
- Deactivate all nonessential plugins. Keep only the minimum needed for the site to remain usable.
- Retry the installation or update, then test the affected front-end and administration pages.
- If the operation succeeds, reactivate plugins one at a time. After each activation, reproduce the original action and check the PHP and web-server logs.
- When the error returns, record the two plugins or components involved, their versions, PHP version, and the exact stack trace. Contact the conflicting plugin author or your host with that information.
Do not leave every plugin disabled as a permanent fix. The test is useful because it identifies a combination that needs an update, configuration change, replacement, or vendor patch.
Recognize resource symptoms
Long-running extraction, “allowed memory size exhausted,” 502/504 responses, and processes killed by the host point to resource limits. Check the PHP memory limit, execution time, process limits, and available disk space in the hosting panel and Site Health. Increasing a limit may help only when the host permits it; it does not resolve a code conflict or incompatible PHP version.

Automatic updates, cron, and managed-host policy
Plugin automatic updates were introduced in WordPress 5.5. When enabled, WordPress.org documentation says they run twice per day by default. They depend on WordPress Cron and on the host permitting background HTTP and filesystem operations.
When automatic updates are absent
On a supported WordPress version, missing auto-update controls can mean a host or another plugin has disabled them. Check for AUTOMATIC_UPDATER_DISABLED in wp-config.php, review must-use plugins, and ask the host whether updates are centrally managed. Do not enable dashboard updates if a deployment pipeline is meant to control production files; two systems updating the same site can produce ownership and rollback problems.

Check scheduled events
In Tools > Site Health, investigate cron warnings and loopback failures. A blocked loopback request can prevent scheduled update tasks from completing even when the dashboard itself loads. A disabled WordPress Cron, an external cron misconfiguration, or a firewall blocking local callbacks can all produce delayed or apparently random update results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Clear a stale maintenance-mode notice
During an update, WordPress creates a file named .maintenance in the WordPress root. If the update stops unexpectedly, that file can remain and make the site display a maintenance message.
- First identify why the update stopped: download, permission, ownership, resource, or compatibility errors should be addressed rather than ignored.
- Confirm that no update process is still running.
- Using SFTP, FTP, or the host’s file manager, open the WordPress root—the directory containing
wp-admin,wp-includes, andwp-content. - Enable display of hidden files if necessary and remove only the root-level
.maintenancefile. - Load the site and administration area, review logs, and retry the update after correcting the original cause.
Removing the file restores access; it does not complete a partial update. If plugin files are incomplete, restore the backup or reinstall the affected plugin after confirming compatibility.
Choose a recovery method
| Method | Best use | Access required | Ownership fit | Rollback and audit considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dashboard install or update | Normal operation when direct writes, downloads, and permissions work | Administrator capability | Runs as the PHP/web-server user | Convenient, but keep a backup and record the plugin version |
| Manual ZIP update | Dashboard download failure or a controlled reinstall | Administrator plus file upload or host file manager | Still requires the destination to be writable, unless files are placed by an owner with appropriate access | Preserve the old directory and package for rollback |
| WP-CLI | Repeatable server-side maintenance and scripted deployments | Shell access and a WordPress-aware account | Uses the shell user; mismatched ownership can create a new problem | Highly auditable; back up and test commands on staging first |
| Host-assisted repair | Ownership, policy, DNS, cron, quota, or WAF problems | Hosting support or administrator access | Can correct the account that actually runs PHP | Ask for the changed paths, logs, and policy so the fix is reproducible |
Compare methods on six questions: can the method write under the current ownership model, is a rollback available, what privilege does it require, will it check compatibility and dependencies, can you audit what changed, and what downtime or maintenance window is needed?
Manual installation and update procedures
Use the dashboard
- Back up the site and confirm available disk space.
- Open Plugins > Add New to install from the directory, or choose Upload Plugin for a trusted ZIP.
- Install or update one plugin at a time and wait for the success message.
- Visit the plugin settings and a representative front-end page. Check Site Health and logs before proceeding to the next update.
Upload a manual ZIP
- Download the release from the official WordPress directory or the developer’s trusted distribution channel.
- Verify the WordPress and PHP requirements and confirm that the file is a single ZIP with the expected directory structure.
- Open Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin, select the ZIP, and choose Install Now.
- If WordPress reports that the destination already exists, stop and preserve the existing directory. Rename it through SFTP or the host file manager only after taking a backup.
- Activate the clean copy and test the site before deleting the preserved directory.
Use WP-CLI when shell access is appropriate
WP-CLI is useful for repeatable, logged maintenance on a server you administer. Typical commands include:
wp plugin list
wp plugin update plugin-slug
wp plugin install plugin-slug --activate
Replace plugin-slug with the actual directory slug. Run as the account that should own the resulting files, not casually as a different deployment user. Confirm the site is backed up, use a staging copy for risky changes, and inspect the command output and logs.

When the administration area is inaccessible
For standard plugins, renaming wp-content/plugins to a temporary name through SFTP or the host file manager makes WordPress treat the directory as unavailable and disables those plugins while preserving their data. Restore the original directory name after access returns, then reactivate plugins one at a time. This does not disable must-use plugins in wp-content/mu-plugins; they load automatically and require a separate, host-level procedure.
Fixes for common messages
| Error or behavior | Action |
|---|---|
| “Could not create directory” | Check disk space, the exact failed path, owner, group, and directory write access. Correct ownership with the host before altering modes. |
| “The update cannot be installed because some files could not be copied” | Look for mixed owners, read-only files, immutable attributes, quota limits, and security rules. Preserve a backup, repair the path, then retry. |
| FTP credentials requested | Determine why direct PHP writes fail. Use the host’s supported SFTP or file-manager workflow only after confirming the account can access the WordPress root. |
| “Download failed” | Test DNS, outbound HTTPS, proxy and firewall rules, certificate validity, temporary storage, and vendor availability from the server. |
| ZIP rejected or plugin appears empty | Obtain a fresh package, remove nested ZIPs or extra wrapper folders, and verify requirements and dependencies. |
| Site times out after activation | Disable nonessential plugins, inspect PHP/server logs and memory limits, then reactivate one component at a time. |
| Maintenance message persists | After confirming no update is running, remove the root .maintenance file through an approved file-access method and repair the underlying failure. |
Prevent the next failed update
- Keep tested backups and know how to restore both files and the database.
- Apply updates in a staging environment when the site is business-critical, then record the plugin and WordPress versions deployed.
- Keep PHP, WordPress, and plugins within their supported compatibility ranges.
- Use one consistent deployment or file-owning account; document who owns files after migrations.
- Monitor disk space, PHP errors, scheduled events, loopback requests, and outbound connectivity.
- Decide whether dashboard auto-updates or a managed deployment process is responsible for production changes, and do not let both compete.
- Keep an approved SFTP or host-file-manager recovery path and protect its credentials.
The safest sequence is consistent: identify the exact layer, back up, make the smallest targeted change, test one plugin, and record the result. If ownership, DNS, cron, or host policy is outside your access, provide support with the error text, timestamps, affected path, WordPress and PHP versions, and relevant log entries rather than repeatedly retrying the same operation.
