If your Canon PIXMA G3770 produces prints that are too dark, washed out, or shifted toward one color, start with the paper and driver settings, then check ink levels and print a nozzle-check pattern. The pattern tells you whether ink is reaching the print-head nozzles. Only after those checks should you run cleaning cycles. If the nozzle pattern is clean, the remaining problem is usually color-management or source-profile settings rather than a blocked nozzle.
Use the sequence below in order. It avoids wasting ink on deep cleaning when the real cause is incorrect paper loading, a mismatched media setting, or an unsuitable color profile.
Start with the least invasive checks
Before touching a maintenance command, confirm the physical media and the settings that control how the G3770 lays down ink. A one-sided sheet has a printable face; loading the reverse can make output unclear or reduce apparent quality. The driver’s media-type choice also changes the ink amount and drying assumptions. Selecting a plain-paper setting for coated photo paper, or a photo setting for ordinary paper, can make density and color look wrong even when the printer is working normally.
- Remove the stack and identify the side marked for printing by the paper manufacturer. Reload it with that side in the printer’s printable orientation.
- In the Canon print dialog, set Media Type to the paper actually loaded. Do not choose a photo-paper option for plain stock or vice versa.
- Set Print Quality to a level appropriate for that media. If you changed quality while troubleshooting, return to a known setting and make a fresh test print.
- Use a new sheet for each comparison so ink from a previous attempt, moisture, or a curled sheet does not confuse the result.
These checks are especially important when every color is affected in the same direction. A globally dark print points first to media, quality, or color-management choices; a single missing hue points more strongly to ink delivery.

Check every ink tank before cleaning
Inspect the G3770’s ink tanks, giving particular attention to the color that appears weak or absent. Canon’s procedure is to identify an empty tank and replace it. Do not assume that a cleaning cycle can restore a tank with no usable ink.
Use the ink designation printed for your country or region when obtaining a replacement. The G3770’s bottle designation is not established as one globally valid part number, so verify the regional Canon listing or the code printed on the installed bottle before buying. Replace only the tank that the inspection identifies as empty, then allow the printer to complete any ink-recognition or preparation step it requests.
A low level can explain a pale or incomplete color, but it does not explain every dark print. If all tanks contain ink and the problem affects one channel, continue to the nozzle check rather than replacing bottles speculatively.
Print a nozzle-check pattern
Use the printer or Canon driver command labeled Print Nozzle Check Pattern. Canon describes this pattern as the way to determine whether ink is ejecting properly from the print-head nozzles. It is a diagnostic page, not a color-calibration sheet.
- Load a sheet of the recommended plain paper in the correct printable orientation.
- Open the G3770’s maintenance controls on the printer panel or in the Canon driver.
- Choose Print Nozzle Check Pattern and print the page.
- Examine every color block and line under good light. Look for missing segments, horizontal gaps, broken grids, or a color block that is absent.
A complete, evenly printed pattern indicates that the nozzles are ejecting ink. If the pattern has gaps or a missing color, treat the issue as an ink-delivery or nozzle problem and follow the cleaning ladder. If the pattern is complete but a photograph is still too dark or has a cast, skip repeated cleaning and investigate color management instead.

Follow Canon’s cleaning ladder
Cleaning should be progressive. Standard cleaning uses less ink than deep cleaning, so do not begin with the most aggressive command.

Run the first standard cleaning
- Open the maintenance controls and select Print Head Cleaning.
- Let the cycle finish without turning the printer off or opening it.
- Print the nozzle-check pattern again.
- Compare the new pattern with the previous one. Improvement means the cleaning addressed the delivery problem; a complete pattern means you can return to normal printing.
Repeat standard cleaning once
If the second pattern still contains the same gaps, Canon allows one more standard cleaning. Perform it exactly as above and print another check page. Two unsuccessful standard cycles are the point at which Canon’s instructions move to deep cleaning.

Use deep cleaning only after two failures
- Select Print Head Deep Cleaning in the same maintenance controls.
- Confirm that the tanks contain enough ink before starting; the process uses substantially more ink than standard cleaning.
- Wait for the cycle to complete, then print a nozzle-check pattern.
Deep cleaning is not a color-enhancement mode. It is intended for nozzles that remain obstructed after standard cleaning. Running it repeatedly on a clean nozzle pattern wastes ink and cannot correct a wrong input profile or an incorrectly selected paper type.
What to do if deep cleaning does not restore the pattern
Canon’s documented waiting sequence is important. If the first deep cleaning does not resolve the faulty pattern, turn the printer off. After 24 hours, turn it back on and perform another deep cleaning, then print a nozzle check.
If the pattern remains defective after two deep cleanings, Canon says the print head may be damaged and directs the owner to contact a service center. At that point, further cycles are unlikely to be a sensible first response. Keep the two failed nozzle-check pages and note which color segments are missing; that information helps the technician distinguish a persistent delivery fault from a settings issue.

When the nozzle check is clean but colors are wrong
A clean pattern proves that ink is reaching the nozzles; it does not prove that the computer is sending the intended color values. Photographs can print too dark or develop a color cast when the application and driver disagree about the source profile or when manual color controls are active.

For a photograph whose source profile is Adobe RGB, Canon documents this Windows workflow:
- Open the Canon printer driver’s color settings and choose Manual for Color/Intensity rather than leaving an unintended automatic override in place.
- Open the detailed color-correction options and select ICM for Color Correction.
- Set Adobe RGB (1998) as the Input Profile when the source photograph is actually tagged or exported as Adobe RGB.
- Print a new test image from the same application and compare it with the earlier result.
The Adobe RGB choice is conditional. If the file uses sRGB or another profile, select the profile that matches that file and the application’s color-managed workflow; do not force Adobe RGB onto an sRGB image. The goal is consistency: one component should interpret the source profile, while the printer driver receives the matching information instead of applying a second, conflicting conversion.
Check for accidental manual adjustments
Manual brightness, contrast, cyan, magenta, or yellow sliders can create a cast even when ICM is selected. Return those controls to their neutral or application-controlled state before making a comparison. Change one setting at a time and keep the file, paper, and print-quality choice unchanged so you can identify which adjustment affected the output.
Separate a profile problem from a nozzle problem
Use the nozzle page as the dividing line. If its color blocks are complete and uniform, cleaning is not the next logical step. If a block is missing or broken, color-management changes cannot replace the absent ink; resume the maintenance ladder instead.

Keep ink quality maintenance enabled
Canon warns that disabling automatic ink-quality maintenance can allow ink in one or more tanks to separate, producing uneven density. On the G3770, leave the automatic ink-quality maintenance option enabled unless you have a specific reason to turn it off.
If you have disabled the automatic option, Canon’s guidance is to perform the maintenance manually about once a week. Use the maintenance command provided for ink quality, not a print-head deep-clean command. The purpose is to keep the ink in a usable condition; it is not a substitute for the nozzle-check and cleaning sequence when segments are missing.
Match paper, quality, and color workflow for photographs
Once the nozzle pattern is good, make your test prints under controlled conditions. Use the same paper stock, printable-side orientation, media type, and quality setting each time. A change in any one of these can alter density, drying, and the driver’s color conversion, making two prints impossible to compare.
- For plain documents, select the plain-paper media type and an ordinary quality level.
- For coated or photo media, select the corresponding Canon media type and load the coated printable side as directed by the paper packaging.
- Keep the application’s color-management choice consistent between tests. If the application manages color, avoid enabling a second, conflicting correction in the driver; if the driver is managing color, use the documented driver profile settings.
- Judge a test page only after it has dried. Compare the same image under the same lighting rather than relying on a different screen or a different room.
The last point does not fix the printer, but it prevents a wet or differently lit print from sending you back into unnecessary maintenance.
Choosing replacement ink and paper
Replacement ink tanks
Buy a replacement only after the tank inspection identifies which color is empty. Confirm the exact regional Canon designation for the PIXMA G3770; a bottle code used in one market is not automatically valid everywhere. Installing the wrong designation can create a new ink-delivery problem and makes the nozzle-check diagnosis harder to interpret.

Inkjet paper
Choose paper explicitly described as compatible with the Canon PIXMA G3770, then follow its printable-side and storage instructions. Compatibility alone does not clear a clogged nozzle: paper can correct a media mismatch or wrong-side loading, but it cannot restore missing nozzle segments. Set the Canon driver’s Media Type to match the selected paper before testing.
A decision path for common symptoms
Every page is uniformly too dark
- Verify the paper’s printable side, Media Type, and Print Quality.
- Print a nozzle-check pattern.
- If the pattern is complete, inspect manual color/intensity and profile settings, especially for photographs.
- If the pattern is broken, use standard cleaning before considering deep cleaning.
One color is missing or very weak
- Inspect that color’s tank and replace it if empty.
- Print a nozzle check to confirm missing segments.
- Run standard cleaning, repeat it once if necessary, and then use deep cleaning only after both standard attempts fail.
Colors have a cast but the nozzle pattern is perfect
- Leave cleaning aside.
- Check whether the file is sRGB, Adobe RGB, or another profile.
- For an Adobe RGB source on Windows, use Manual Color/Intensity, ICM Color Correction, and Adobe RGB (1998) as the Input Profile.
- Remove unintended manual color offsets and print again with unchanged media settings.
The problem returns after apparently successful cleaning
Check that automatic ink-quality maintenance is enabled. If it is disabled, perform the maintenance manually about weekly as Canon advises. A recurring nozzle fault after the two-deep-cleaning sequence warrants service rather than endless cycles.
Before contacting a service center
Prepare a concise record: the paper type and printable-side orientation, the Media Type and Print Quality settings, ink levels, nozzle-check results, and which cleaning stages you completed. If you followed Canon’s 24-hour interval and two-deep-cleaning limit, include that fact. This gives the service center a reproducible history and avoids repeating unnecessary ink-consuming steps.

Escalate when the nozzle pattern is still damaged after the prescribed sequence, when a color remains absent despite a correctly identified and filled tank, or when the printer reports a hardware-related error. Canon’s guidance is that a print head may be damaged after two unsuccessful deep cleanings; service is the appropriate next step.
