U.S. shoppers bought substantially fewer candy units over the past year even as the category added nearly $1.8 billion in sales. Numerator data reported by Supermarket News on October 15, 2026, indicates that higher prices and a shift toward different formats—not increased consumption—are driving the dollar growth.

What the latest candy figures show

The decline is measured in units, while revenue continues to rise. Numerator’s U.S. data shows more than 770 million fewer candy units sold over the past year, alongside an almost $1.8 billion increase in sales. The same pattern is visible over the longer period beginning in 2019: category sales grew 65%, but unit volume increased only 4%.

Measure Change Time frame
Total U.S. candy sales Nearly $1.8 billion higher Past year
Total candy units More than 770 million fewer Past year
Category sales 65% growth Since 2019
Category units 4% growth Since 2019
Average spend per candy unit 59% higher Since 2019
Average units per household 116, down by more than seven Past year

The 116-unit average is the category’s largest annual household decline in six years, according to the reported Numerator figures. Because the dollar and unit periods are different in the source, the past-year and since-2019 comparisons should not be combined into a single annual rate.

Why sales can rise when unit volume falls

Higher prices increase revenue per purchase

Average spending per candy unit is up 59% since 2019. If each bar, bag or other package costs more, retailers and manufacturers can collect more dollars even when households put fewer units in their baskets. The gap between 65% sales growth and 4% unit growth is consistent with that price effect.

Product mix changes the average ticket

Unit counts treat every purchased item as one unit, regardless of its price. A shopper switching from a lower-priced piece to a premium, larger or specialty package can raise sales dollars without raising the number of units. The data therefore describes a category that is earning more per unit, not one that is selling more pieces.

Which candy formats are still growing?

Growth is concentrated in sugary candy rather than chocolate. Sugary-candy units rose 16% since 2019, while chocolate units were flat.

Gummies lead sugary-candy growth

Gummies generated most of the sugary-candy unit growth identified in the report. The source names Smarties, Albanese, BUBS Swedish Candy and Hot Tamales among brands benefiting from that shift. These examples indicate where volume is moving within the category, but the figures do not establish each brand’s individual sales or market share.

Sugar-free, low-carb and freeze-dried formats gain attention

Sugar-free candy, low-carb candy and freeze-dried candy are also gaining ground. The report does not provide a separate unit or dollar total for each format, so their relative contribution cannot be ranked beyond the stated gummy-led growth.

How household generations differ

Millennial households increased their non-chocolate candy units per household by 20% since 2019, while their chocolate consumption remained stable. The reported decline in chocolate units is attributed to other generations rather than to Millennials.

This split helps explain why a flat chocolate result for the overall category can coexist with growth in selected sugary formats: household behavior is not moving uniformly, and the category mix depends on which generations are buying.

Are GLP-1 drugs changing candy consumption?

Numerator’s comparison shows lower candy purchasing among households using GLP-1 medications, but it does not prove that the medications caused the broader category decline. Over the six months ending August 31, GLP-1 households bought 5.4 fewer candy units per household, compared with a 4.5-unit decline nationally.

Household group Change in candy units per household Period
Households using GLP-1 medications 5.4 fewer units Six months ending August 31
All households nationally 4.5 fewer units Same six-month period

The difference is 0.9 unit per household beyond the national decline in that period. The figures show an association in purchasing data; they do not identify medication adherence, medical reasons, income effects or other factors that might influence an individual household’s candy purchases.

What the trend means for shoppers and the category

  • For shoppers: fewer units sold does not necessarily mean candy is cheaper. The 59% rise in average spend per unit since 2019 means a smaller basket can still cost more.
  • For retailers: tracking dollars alone can obscure falling physical volume. Unit movement and price per unit need to be reviewed together.
  • For manufacturers: gummies and other non-chocolate formats are supplying the clearest documented unit growth, while chocolate is holding flat overall.
  • For interpreting GLP-1 effects: GLP-1 households show a larger decline than the national average, but the available comparison is observational and covers six months ending August 31.

Bottom line on the candy slowdown

Candy is not experiencing a simple collapse in revenue. It is selling fewer physical units while generating more dollars because prices and the value mix have risen. Since 2019, sugary candy—especially gummies—and newer sugar-free, low-carb and freeze-dried formats have gained units, while chocolate has stayed flat overall. The GLP-1 household comparison points to an additional reduction in candy purchasing, but it is one factor within a broader shift toward fewer, more expensive units.
