Yes—but not for every cancer. In a 2025 U.S. National Institutes of Health analysis, 14 of 33 cancer types increased in at least one age group younger than 50 between 2010 and 2019, while 19 declined. The overall rate of all cancers and overall cancer deaths did not increase. Researchers see a mixture of possible explanations—earlier exposure to established risks, obesity, alcohol, environmental and microbiome changes, birth-cohort effects, and shifts in detection—but no single cause has been proved.
What “younger adults” means in the latest evidence
The National Cancer Institute’s 2025 analysis defines early-onset cancer as a diagnosis before age 50. It examined three groups separately: ages 15–29, 30–39 and 40–49. That definition is narrower than some adolescent-and-young-adult programs, which use different age ranges.
Keeping the age bands separate matters. A change in people aged 40–49 does not automatically describe teenagers or people in their 20s, and a rise in one cancer does not mean cancer overall is increasing in every younger group.
What is actually rising—and what is not
The U.S. picture from 2010–2019
Fourteen of 33 cancer types increased in at least one under-50 age group. Nineteen decreased, so the combined rate for all cancers did not rise. Nine of the 14 cancers that increased in younger adults also increased in at least one older age group, suggesting that some influences affect more than one generation. Five rose only in a younger group in this analysis: melanoma, cervical, stomach, myeloma, and bone and joint cancers.

Overall cancer mortality also remained level. That does not make every trend benign: deaths from colorectal and uterine cancers increased at younger ages, a pattern NCI researchers describe as concerning.
Which cancers account for most of the additional cases?
NIH estimated how many more cases occurred in 2019 than would have been expected if 2010 rates had continued. These are modeled additional cases, not a prediction for an individual.

The international colorectal signal
Early-onset colorectal cancer is not limited to the United States. NCI reports that nearly 10% of new colorectal cancers worldwide occur in people under 50. An American Cancer Society-led analysis found rising early-onset colorectal-cancer incidence in 27 of 50 countries. Country patterns differ, so no single global percentage should be treated as the rate in every nation.
Why researchers have not found one explanation
Different cancers, age groups and countries show different patterns. Researchers therefore compare explanations by the kind of evidence behind them, the cancers they could affect, and how much of the increase could be explained by diagnosis rather than new disease.
Risk factors appearing earlier or becoming more common
NIH says causes are likely to be cancer-specific and may include established risk factors becoming common at younger ages. Obesity is the leading hypothesis discussed in current reviews. NCI summarized a 2024 analysis in which six of nine obesity-related cancers increased among young adults; increases in body weight were associated with colon, rectal, pancreatic and kidney cancers.

Those are population associations. They do not prove that obesity caused an individual cancer or explain every cancer that rose. Alcohol and other lifestyle exposures are also being studied, but their effects vary by cancer and by the amount and timing of exposure.

More screening, imaging, follow-up of high-risk people, and changes in clinical diagnosis or coding can raise the number of cancers recorded in medical data. These changes could explain part of an incidence increase. They cannot automatically explain signals that occur below routine screening ages or appear in multiple countries, where screening policies and health systems differ.
Incidence measures new diagnoses; mortality measures deaths. A rise in incidence can reflect detection of disease that might previously have gone unnoticed, while a rise in deaths indicates a different public-health concern.

Birth-cohort effects
NCI researchers have proposed that people born from the 1950s onward may have encountered a “whole package” of changing environmental, lifestyle and other exposures. If those exposures accelerate the time to cancer, successive birth cohorts could develop disease at younger ages. This remains a hypothesis rather than an identified cause.
The gut microbiome and infectious mechanisms
Researchers are examining whether changes in gut-microbiome composition influence cancer risk. One active line of work involves a DNA-damaging toxin made by some E. coli strains. These are biologically plausible mechanisms and laboratory or observational clues, not an established population-level explanation for the global trend.

Inherited genetics
Inherited mutations can be important for particular patients and families. NCI cites a Memorial Sloan Kettering study in which nearly 20% of people under 35 with cancer carried a predisposition. That finding does not mean inherited genetics caused the population-wide increase: human genomes do not change quickly enough over a few decades to account for it. Studies comparing tumor genetics across generations have produced conflicting results.

Environmental exposures, including microplastics
Microplastics and other environmental exposures are being investigated, along with heavy alcohol use and other possible contributors. For many individual factors, epidemiologist Ulrike Peters, Ph.D., said there is no strong epidemiological evidence that they are individually linked to early-onset cancers. Biological plausibility alone is not proof of causation.

As Y. Nancy You, M.D., of MD Anderson, put it: “I don’t think there’s going to be a single ‘smoking gun’ … It’s a long-horizon answer.”
Should younger adults get screened earlier?
The trend alone does not create a universal recommendation to begin screening early. Screening depends on symptoms, family history, inherited-risk findings, personal medical history and the guidelines used in your country or health system. People at elevated risk may be offered a different schedule from average-risk adults.

Do not wait for a routine screening age if you have persistent or worsening symptoms. NCI clinicians specifically highlight rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, diarrhea and iron-deficiency anemia as warning signs that warrant prompt medical evaluation for possible early-onset colorectal cancer. These symptoms have many noncancer causes and are not a diagnosis, but age should not be used to dismiss them.
What a cancer diagnosis means for genetic risk
After a diagnosis, genetic counseling and testing can identify inherited syndromes such as Lynch syndrome. Results may influence treatment, determine whether relatives should be offered counseling or testing, and guide future surveillance. A family history is useful information, but the absence of one does not rule out an inherited mutation.
What the evidence supports today
The most defensible conclusion is specific rather than sweeping: several cancers, especially breast, colorectal, kidney and uterine cancers, are being diagnosed more often in at least some under-50 groups, while many other cancers are not. The U.S. all-cancer incidence and mortality totals did not increase from 2010 to 2019. Researchers are testing multiple explanations, and the relative contribution of exposures, biology, detection and birth-cohort effects remains unresolved.
