AI can now produce a convincing storefront, polished product descriptions, fake reviews and responsive customer-service chats in minutes. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security’s October 7, 2026 holiday-shopping guidance warns that appearance and fluent writing are no longer reliable evidence that an online seller is genuine. Shoppers should verify the business independently, scrutinize the offer and use payment and account protections before buying.

Why AI shopping scams are more convincing

Fraudsters can use generative AI to assemble an entire shopping experience: advertisements, product pages, testimonials, delivery updates and support conversations. A site may have perfect grammar, professional graphics and instant answers while still being operated to steal money or personal information.

The Cyber Centre says to “Treat AI (artificial intelligence)-generated recommendations as guidance, not assurances of legitimacy.” An AI shopping assistant can help find products, but it cannot reliably establish that a seller, website or deal is trustworthy. Cyber Month 2026 similarly notes that AI is making threats “more convincing than ever,” while the basic security precautions remain the same.

Warning signs to check before you buy

Prices and pressure

  • A price far below the range shown by established retailers may indicate counterfeit goods, a non-delivery scam or a stolen-card operation.
  • Urgent countdown timers, “only a few left” notices and messages claiming an offer expires in minutes are pressure tactics. Pause and verify instead of buying to meet the deadline.
  • Unexpected requests for customs fees, delivery charges, refunds or “overpayment” repayments are especially risky when they arrive by email, text or social media after an order.

Payment and contact requests

  • Do not leave the normal checkout flow to send an e-transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency or other difficult-to-reverse payment.
  • Be wary when support staff ask for remote access, one-time passcodes, copies of identity documents or payment details that the retailer should already have.
  • A phone number, address or live chat window is not proof of a real business; scammers can generate or copy all three.

Verify the seller independently

  1. Navigate directly. Type the retailer’s known address or use a bookmark rather than following a promotional link in an unsolicited email, text or social post.
  2. Inspect the exact domain. Look for misspellings, extra words, deceptive subdomains and a different top-level domain from the business’s established address. A padlock only indicates an encrypted connection, not an honest seller.
  3. Check business history. Search for the company outside its own website and look for a consistent history, independent complaints and reporting from established sources.
  4. Evaluate buyer feedback. Prefer reviews tied to verified purchases and feedback appearing on more than one independent platform. Repeated phrasing, an unusual burst of five-star posts or reviews that discuss products generically can signal generated content.
  5. Read the policies. Confirm that return, refund, privacy, shipping and warranty terms identify the same business and explain how to contact it. Missing, copied or contradictory policies are reasons to stop.
  6. Compare the deal. Check several independent prices and product specifications. A discount that cannot be explained by an ordinary sale, clearance or open-box condition deserves extra scrutiny.
  7. Verify marketplace accounts. On a marketplace or social platform, confirm the seller’s verification status, account age, transaction history and buyer-protection terms. Keep messages and payment inside the platform.

Secure your accounts and devices first

Use a unique passphrase for every shopping account and turn on phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever the service supports it. A FIDO2 security key is an optional physical implementation on supported accounts; compatibility differs by site and device, so check the account’s enrollment and recovery process and keep an approved spare key or another documented recovery method.

Install operating-system, browser and security-software updates before shopping. Buy through a trusted home or mobile connection rather than public Wi-Fi, and never approve an MFA prompt you did not initiate. If a retailer requires an account, provide only the information needed for the purchase and avoid reusing credentials from email or banking services.

Choose payment methods that give you a way back

A credit card generally offers a dispute process when goods never arrive or a transaction is unauthorized. Where appropriate, a virtual card with a spending limit can reduce exposure if the number is later misused. Review the card issuer’s fraud alerts and notification settings before the season begins.

Payment protection is not a guarantee: contact the issuer promptly, follow its dispute deadlines and retain order confirmations, screenshots, receipts and delivery records. E-transfers, gift cards and cryptocurrency commonly provide fewer recovery options, particularly when a stranger instructs you to use them outside the retailer’s normal checkout.

If you already paid a scam store

  1. Contact the financial institution immediately. Ask the card issuer or bank to block or replace compromised credentials, stop pending transactions where possible and open a fraud or chargeback investigation. Explain exactly what happened and provide transaction evidence.
  2. Secure reused accounts. Change any password used on the store or elsewhere, beginning with email and financial accounts. Use new, unique passphrases and revoke unfamiliar sessions or saved payment tokens.
  3. Preserve evidence. Save the website address, advertisements, chat transcripts, receipts, payment records, shipping messages and screenshots. Do not warn the operator or send additional money to obtain a promised refund.
  4. Report it even if the attempt failed. Report fraud or attempted fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. Also use the marketplace, payment service and relevant platform reporting tools. If identity documents were exposed, follow your government-issued identification and credit-bureau replacement and alert procedures.

The scale of the problem in Canada

Reported Canadian fraud losses have risen in recent years, according to figures cited by the Cyber Centre and partner agencies:

Year Reported losses
2021 $383 million
2022 $530 million
2023 $567 million

These are reported national losses, not a measure of every incident; many victims do not report. In 2024, one in four Canadians said they had been the victim of a cyber attack such as an email, malware, text or phishing scam, a social-media account hack or identity theft, according to Communications Security Establishment Canada, Get Cyber Safe, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
