Yes. TV placement can change how much room light reflects off the screen and how clearly the picture holds up from different seats. Those effects can make viewing less comfortable, but sitting close to a TV does not ruin eyesight. The useful fixes are to manage reflections, choose a position that suits the room and seats, and adjust viewing distance and brightness for comfort—not to treat placement as eye protection.
How placement changes the picture
Reflected light can wash out dark scenes
A TV reflects some light from its surroundings. When a window or lamp shines toward the screen, the reflection can distract you, alter perceived colors, and make dark areas look brighter by raising the apparent black level. RTINGS describes glare as a significant issue when bright windows or lights face a TV, and recommends positioning the screen so direct light does not shine on it. RTINGS’ room-lighting guide also advises setting the backlight or OLED light to suit the room. Increasing brightness may help the image remain visible in a bright room, but it does not remove the reflection.
Try changing the geometry before changing the TV: move the screen or light source, adjust the viewing position, or reduce daylight with blinds or curtains. The best adjustment depends on where the light falls; a window beside the TV may be less troublesome than one reflected directly in the screen.
Matte and glossy finishes make different compromises
A glossy finish tends to show reflections as more defined, mirror-like images. A matte coating spreads reflections more broadly, but that can raise black levels or reduce the sense of depth in dark scenes. Neither finish is automatically better: reflection handling also depends on other screen and panel properties. RTINGS discusses these tradeoffs in its screen-finish explanation. Consider how the TV performs in your room rather than choosing on the word “matte” or “glossy” alone.

Side seats may see a different image
Glare is not the only placement issue. Some TVs lose picture quality when viewed from the side, and panel technology affects how well a set preserves the image at wider angles. RTINGS tests viewing angles and describes the point at which picture quality begins to decline; its results are measurements of specific TVs, not a universal rating for every panel. See its viewing-angle test methodology when comparing sets. If several people watch from seats spread across the room, account for those seats as well as the central one. A narrow viewing angle is generally less noticeable from farther away.
How to choose a TV position for your room
- Check the screen from the seats people actually use. Look for direct reflections from windows, lamps, and other bright sources, including at the times of day you usually watch.
- Change the light path where practical. Reposition the TV or lamp, use window coverings, or try a different seating angle. For a wall-mounted TV, a compatible tilting mount may help redirect a reflected light source; whether it helps depends on the room’s light geometry. Check the mount’s compatibility and installation requirements before buying or fitting one.
- Account for side seating. If viewers sit far off center, check the TV’s viewing-angle performance and consider whether moving the screen or seats would improve the view for everyone.
- Set image brightness for the room. Adjust the TV’s backlight or OLED light so the picture is visible without assuming that extra brightness will cancel a reflection.
Screen height and tilt can affect reflections in a particular room, but there is no placement that guarantees a reflection-free image. A historical example illustrates why the result depends on context: a 2012 Japan Ergonomics Society guide says that, for a 50-inch TV with its lower edge 70 cm above the floor, lighting fixtures would be reflected in close to 10% of households in the survey context it cited. The guide also says tilting the screen forward can lower the probability of a lighting-fixture reflection. That figure is not a current estimate for households generally. How far away should you sit?
There is no single viewing distance that applies to every screen, room, and viewer. Sony gives a broad guideline of sitting about two to five times the screen’s diagonal away. Sony’s viewing-distance guidance is a manufacturer recommendation, not a medical threshold. Samsung’s Canada buying guide notes that resolution affects how close you can sit while retaining image detail, and frames distance in terms of how much of your field of view the screen occupies. Samsung Canada’s TV-size guide likewise does not establish one ideal distance for everyone.

Does sitting close to a TV damage your eyes?
No. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says the familiar claim that sitting too close to a television ruins eyesight is not true. Prolonged screen viewing can still cause temporary discomfort, including blurred vision, aching, dryness, tearing, or stinging. In an AAO article published June 27, 2024, reviewer James M. Huffman, MD, put it this way: “However, it is true that your eyes may feel uncomfortable if you stare at your screen too long.” Read the AAO’s guidance on screens and eye discomfort.
For comfort, the AAO suggests periodically looking away at a distant object and matching screen brightness to the surrounding light. These steps address discomfort; they do not mean that a particular TV position or distance prevents eye damage. The AAO’s computer-use advice provides additional screen-viewing guidance.
