AI is changing the pace and shape of security work, but it does not make every attack autonomous—and buying AI tools alone will not make a security operations center (SOC) fast enough. The practical test is whether your team can connect activity across identity, email, endpoints, cloud and networks, investigate it quickly, and respond at speed without surrendering human judgment where the consequences are serious.
What AI changes for a SOC
AI can help attackers work faster, but the evidence is specific rather than universal. Check Point Research’s 2026 incident research describes AI performing operational tasks in some observed intrusions, including generating commands and running exploitation workflows. That does not establish that all attackers use AI this way, or that AI is behind every intrusion.
For defenders, the larger challenge is that an intrusion may cross several systems. A suspicious login, an email event, endpoint activity, cloud access and network traffic can look like separate alerts until someone connects them. If investigation and response depend on slow handoffs between tools or teams, faster activity on either side can expose the gap.
AI use inside the organization also adds activity to monitor. Check Point Research reported that organizations in its enterprise observations used an average of 10 different AI applications each month. It also found that high-risk GenAI prompts rose from 2% to 4% during its measured year, according to Check Point’s definition and telemetry. These figures describe Check Point’s observations—not all organizations or all AI interactions.

How common is workplace AI use?
One separate measure comes from Arctic Wolf’s 2026 report: a global survey of 1,350 security and IT decision-makers conducted by Sapio Research. In that survey, 94% of respondents said their organizations used large language models, and 94% said AI capabilities influenced cybersecurity purchasing decisions. These are survey responses, not a census of organizations or proof that AI alone determined a purchase.
Together, the findings point to two operational concerns: defenders may face AI-assisted activity in some incidents, while employees and security teams are adopting AI applications that can create new data flows and risks. They do not prove a universal staffing shortage, quantify how much faster attacks have become, or show that buying a particular product improves SOC performance.

What a faster, more coherent response requires
In his Troye article, technical director Kurt Goodall argues that CISOs should ask whether security operations can keep up, rather than simply whether the organization has enough tools. His recommended approach is to connect signals across the environment and investigate what happened after an alert—not stop at identifying a suspicious login.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Connect activity across security domains
Build a view that can relate identity, email, endpoint, cloud application and network events. When a login looks suspicious, analysts should be able to assess whether it was followed by access to sensitive information, activity on an endpoint or changes in cloud use. Correlation helps turn isolated alerts into an incident timeline that can guide investigation and response.

- 【Up to 1100 Mbps VPN Speed 】 Hardware-accelerated WireGuard and OpenVPN-DCO deliver up to 1100 Mbps VPN throughput, over 3× faster than Brume 2 for smooth remote access and file transfers.
- 【Three 2.5G Ports & Multi-WAN】Tri-port 2.5GbE design with flexible WAN LAN configuration supports multi-gigabit wired setups, dual-ISP Multi-WAN and failover to keep home and SOHO networks online.
- 【Stealth VPN Obfuscation】VPN obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, helping you evade blocking, bypass restrictive networks and maintain stable, private connections.
- 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
- 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles
Make monitoring and investigation continuous
Define who is watching for alerts, who investigates them, and how incidents move from detection to response—including outside normal business hours. Goodall presents continuous monitoring, threat hunting, investigation and response as functions that can be delivered through managed detection and response (MDR). That is his operational recommendation, not evidence that MDR is the right model for every organization.
Automate proportionately
Automate repeatable, well-understood actions where the risk is acceptable, but set approval thresholds for consequential containment. Disabling an account, isolating an endpoint or interrupting a business-critical service can limit harm—or create it if the alert is wrong. Define when automation may act, when an analyst must approve, how an action can be reversed, and what evidence is retained for later review.

- Runs UniFi Network for full-stack network management
- Manages 30+ UniFi Network devices and 300+ clients
- 1 Gbps routing with IDS/IPS
- Multi-WAN load balancing
- 0.96" LCM status display
Goodall’s concise version of the speed principle is: “if attackers can automate the attack, defenders need to automate the response.” Read that as a case for faster, disciplined response—not a guarantee that autonomous containment is always safe or effective.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould you improve an internal SOC or consider MDR?
There is no universal winner. An internal SOC may suit an organization that can provide the required coverage and investigation capability itself; MDR may be relevant when an organization needs an external service for functions such as continuous monitoring, threat hunting or response. Compare the actual service and operating responsibilities rather than the label.
- Coverage and commitments: What hours are covered, and what response commitments apply?
- Data sources: Can the team or provider work across identity, email, endpoints, cloud and network data relevant to your environment?
- Investigation scope: Does the service include threat hunting and incident investigation, or only alert notification?
- Response authority: Which actions can be automated, and which require your approval before containment?
- Evidence and auditability: Are decisions, actions and supporting evidence recorded for review?
- Integration effort: What tools, data access and operational changes are needed to make the service work?
- Geography and regulatory fit: Does the operating model fit where your organization works and the rules it must follow?
- Total operating cost: What is the full cost of coverage, integrations, internal oversight and ongoing operation?
For South African organizations, Goodall’s recommendations come from the perspective of a South African technology services provider. Treat geography and regulatory fit as specific procurement questions; the article does not establish that one operating model suits every South African organization.
Quick Recap
A practical way to find the speed gap
- Trace a recent suspicious login. Check whether your team can establish what account was used, what sensitive information it accessed, and whether related endpoint or cloud activity followed.
- Follow the evidence across systems. Identify which identity, email, endpoint, cloud and network records are available, and where analysts must switch tools or request data from another team.
- Walk through the response. Establish who investigates, who can contain the activity, what requires approval, and how the organization can reverse or review an action.
- Test coverage and handoffs. Confirm who handles alerts at each hour and how investigation and escalation work when the usual team is unavailable.
- Close the specific gaps. Improve visibility, process, integration or service coverage where the walkthrough found a delay. Do not assume that adding an AI product will fix a gap in data access, authority or ownership.
