Yes. Your phone provider can see some information about internet traffic that crosses its network, but HTTPS usually prevents it from reading the contents of secure pages, such as what you type into a form. It may still see connection details or infer the site you visit. Exactly what a provider collects or keeps depends on the carrier, its policies, and the laws that apply where you live.
What can your phone provider see?
Your mobile carrier carries data between your phone and internet services, so it can observe some network-level information. That does not mean it can read every page or message. With a properly secured HTTPS connection, the page content and information you submit are encrypted between your device and the website.
Encryption does not necessarily hide every clue about a connection. A carrier may see connection metadata and, depending on the technical circumstances, infer a destination from IP addresses or other signals. The FTC’s 2021 report on six major US internet providers, including mobile providers, said some studied providers stored accessed IP addresses and could thereby collect website domain names. That is a finding about those providers and that study’s context—not a guarantee about every carrier or connection. Read the FTC report.

The FTC published its staff report on October 21, 2021. It examined six major US providers; the accompanying announcement said those providers represented about 98 percent of the US mobile internet market at the time. The report documented collection of browsing, app-use, and location-related information. It also said at least two providers in the study associated subscriber account information with browsing history, app usage, and other behavioral or location information. These are historical US findings, not a description of every provider’s current practices worldwide. FTC announcement.

Can your carrier see the websites you visit or what you search?
It may be able to identify or infer some website destinations, but HTTPS generally protects the content exchanged with the site. That distinction matters: knowing that a connection was made to a service is different from reading the page, the search terms entered into an encrypted site, or the contents of a submitted form.
What a particular carrier logs, links to a customer account, retains, or uses is provider- and jurisdiction-specific. The FTC findings describe practices documented in its 2021 study; they do not establish what every carrier does today. The available sources also do not establish a universal retention period. Check your provider’s privacy policy and the rules applicable where you live for provider-specific details.

Which history is held by which service?
“Internet history” can mean several different records. Clearing one does not automatically clear the others.
- Carrier records: Network information associated with traffic that crosses the mobile service. Collection, retention, and account association vary by provider and jurisdiction.
- Browser and device history: Local records such as pages saved by the browser. Private browsing limits some local saving, but does not erase records held by other parties.
- Google account activity: Google’s Web & App Activity can save searches and activity from Google products and services. Depending on settings, it may include Chrome history and activity from sites and apps that use Google services. This is separate from carrier records. Google explains how to find and control Web & App Activity.
- Website records: A site receives requests made to its service and information you submit. If you sign in, the site can associate activity with that account regardless of private-browsing mode.
Does Incognito hide browsing from your phone provider?
No. Incognito is mainly a local-privacy feature: after all Incognito windows are closed, Chrome limits the browsing history and site data it retains on the device. It does not prevent the carrier or other network operators from observing network activity. Google says that “organisations that manage your network, like your school, employer or Internet service provider, may be able to observe your activity in Incognito.” Google Chrome Help.

Downloads and bookmarks can remain on the device, and signing into a website still identifies you to that site. Deleting browser history likewise does not erase carrier records or Google account activity.

| Tool | What it helps with | What it does not do | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| HTTPS | Encrypts content exchanged between your device and a secure website. | Does not guarantee that all connection metadata or destination clues are hidden. | Protection depends on a secure connection and the behavior of the endpoint. |
| Incognito | Limits browser history and site data retained locally after the session. | Does not hide network activity from a carrier, employer, or school. | Provides local privacy, not network privacy; downloads and bookmarks remain. |
| Private DNS | Protects DNS questions and answers. | Does not protect the rest of your internet traffic. | It is DNS-only protection, and Android setting availability varies. |
| VPN | Encrypts traffic to a VPN endpoint and can reduce what the carrier can see about destinations. | Does not guarantee anonymity or cover traffic excluded from the VPN. | You shift trust to the VPN operator; coverage, exclusions, and terms vary. |
Private DNS protects DNS only
On Android, Private DNS secures DNS lookups—the questions that translate domain names into network addresses—but not the traffic that follows. Google’s guidance is explicit: “Private DNS helps secure only DNS questions and answers. It can’t protect anything else.” Android Help.

A VPN changes who can observe the connection
A VPN creates an encrypted connection to a VPN endpoint. This can limit what the mobile carrier can see about destinations, but it does not make you anonymous: the VPN operator becomes another party to trust. Review its logging and coverage policies, and remember that some traffic may not use the VPN. For example, Google Fi says its VPN may not cover traffic over local networks, tethered-device connections, secondary Android profiles, and some system services. That describes Google Fi’s service, not every VPN. Google Fi VPN guidance.

How to reduce exposure without confusing the tools
- Use HTTPS sites. Look for a secure connection in your browser. HTTPS protects page contents in transit, but does not promise to conceal all connection details from the carrier.
- Use Incognito only for local privacy. It can reduce what Chrome saves on the device after the session; it is not a way to hide network activity from your provider.
- Review account activity separately. Check Google Web & App Activity settings if you want to manage activity associated with your Google account.
- Consider a VPN if you want to reduce carrier visibility into destinations. Assess the VPN operator’s policies and which traffic is covered; the carrier may still see a VPN connection and its data volume.
- Check your carrier’s privacy policy. Look for the categories of information collected, how they may be associated with your account, and applicable retention details. There is no universal retention schedule established by the sources cited here.
