You can’t verify Squadron 42’s game files in Steam right now. As of October 13, 2026, Steam says the game is “not yet available” and lists a planned release of Q2 2027. RSI also says Squadron 42 is in development and unavailable to download. Because there is no downloadable Steam installation to check, Steam’s usual file-verification controls are not currently a solution for Squadron 42.
That distinction matters if you arrived here after a failed launch, interrupted update, or suspected corruption. A Steam verification command can only inspect files that Steam has actually installed and manages. A store page, wishlist entry, or announced release window does not create a local game installation. At present, there is therefore no Squadron 42 folder in a Steam library that you can repair through Steam.
Why Steam can’t verify Squadron 42 yet
A Steam store page does not mean a game is available to install. The Squadron 42 listing names Cloud Imperium Games as developer and Roberts Space Industries as publisher, but it currently gives only a planned release period: Q2 2027. Q2 means the second quarter of the year; it is a planning window, not an exact day or a promise that the listing cannot change.
The page’s current wording is that “This game is not yet available on Steam.” That status is the important part for troubleshooting. Steam can display a product page, publisher information, announcements, and a planned date even when it has no downloadable build assigned to your account. Without a Steam-managed build on the computer, there is nothing for Steam’s library properties, installed-files checks, or repair controls to scan.

RSI’s support article Where can I download Squadron 42?, updated February 4, 2026, states: “Squadron 42 is currently in development and is not available for download.” RSI says that accounts with a pledge containing Squadron 42 will be able to download it after development is complete, the game has been tested, and it has been released. A pledge that includes the game is therefore not the same thing as a currently downloadable Steam license or an installed copy.
So there is no installed Steam copy of Squadron 42 to repair at present. Do not treat Steam’s general game-file verification controls as a usable Squadron 42 troubleshooting procedure until the game is released and its Steam availability changes. Following a generic click path in Steam now could only lead to a missing-installation message, a store page, or an unrelated game in your library.
What “verify files” normally means
File verification is a platform operation that compares an installed game’s local data with the files expected by that platform. If a file is missing or damaged, the platform can normally replace it. That process depends on three things: an installed copy, a known game manifest or equivalent record, and access to the platform’s download service. Squadron 42 currently lacks the first of those requirements on Steam, so there is no practical Steam verification job to start.

This is why the existence of a Steam listing should not be confused with Steam ownership, a completed download, or a repairable installation. A planned release date is an availability notice, not evidence that files have been delivered to your drive. The same applies if you can see screenshots, follow the store page, or have a qualifying RSI pledge. None of those facts supplies Steam with a local Squadron 42 build to compare.
What to do if you meant an RSI Launcher installation
RSI’s published verification guidance is for installations managed through the RSI Launcher, not Steam. Squadron 42 itself is not currently downloadable, so these steps cannot repair a Squadron 42 installation today. They describe RSI’s process for an affected game installation in the launcher and may be relevant if RSI later makes Squadron 42 available there. They also apply to the RSI-managed installation you may actually be troubleshooting if your question used “Squadron 42” as shorthand for another RSI game.
- Open the RSI Launcher and sign in. Use the launcher that owns the installation you are trying to repair. A Steam client cannot verify files that were installed and registered by a separate launcher.
- Open Settings. RSI places the relevant channel, installation-location, and verification controls in the launcher’s settings area. If the layout changes in a later launcher version, use the labels shown by RSI’s current support instructions rather than assuming Steam’s menu names apply.
- Select the channel for the affected game version. RSI’s troubleshooting guidance gives LIVE and PTU as examples. Choose the channel that corresponds to the files on the drive. Checking one channel while the installation belongs to another can make the launcher look at the wrong data set.
- Check the installation location. Confirm that the path shown in launcher settings is the folder containing the installed game files. RSI warns that a mismatched path can make the launcher think the game is not installed. This is a path-registration problem, not proof that all files have disappeared.
- Click VERIFY. Start the launcher’s verification command and allow it to run to completion. RSI says the launcher may download or install files it determines are necessary. That can include replacement data or files needed to bring the installation back to the expected state.
Do not start a second repair process while VERIFY is working. Let the launcher finish its own scan and any follow-up download or installation. RSI recommends waiting for verification to complete before running other resource-intensive programs or apps. Heavy disk, processor, or network activity can compete with the launcher and make troubleshooting harder to interpret.
What RSI verification can and cannot fix
RSI describes verification as a way to address corrupted or broken files. Corruption can result from patching problems or an interruption during download or installation. Replacing a damaged file can resolve a launch failure or an update problem when that file is the cause.

Verification is not a guarantee that every installation or launch issue will disappear. A failed login, service outage, incorrect account, wrong channel, incorrect installation path, or a problem outside the game files can remain after a successful scan. A verification result also does not turn an unavailable product into a downloadable one. For Squadron 42 specifically, the current obstacle is availability: RSI says it is still in development and not available for download.
Path and channel checks before pressing VERIFY
If the launcher says the game is not installed, check the path before assuming that the files must be downloaded again. The folder may still exist on another drive while the launcher is pointed at a different location. RSI specifically warns that a mismatched installation path can make the launcher treat an existing installation as absent.
Next, check the selected channel. LIVE and PTU are separate examples in RSI’s troubleshooting material, and the launcher must inspect the channel that matches the installation you intend to run. Selecting the wrong channel can produce confusing results, such as an apparent missing installation or a request for files that belong to a different build. Correcting the path and channel is a safer first step than deleting folders.
These checks are especially important after moving a game directory, changing drives, reinstalling the launcher, or switching between channels. The supported sequence is to confirm what the launcher is set to use, then run VERIFY and observe what it reports. Do not infer from a Steam folder, shortcut, or store page that the RSI Launcher can automatically use those files; the launcher’s own installation location is the reference point for its verification process.
If verification or downloading keeps failing
RSI says corrupted files can result from patching problems or interruptions during download and installation. If VERIFY completes but the same launcher error returns, or if the verification process itself fails, record the exact message and review the launcher log as RSI’s error guidance recommends.
RSI’s article covering errors such as 2000 or 50XX points readers toward the launcher log when verification does not resolve the issue. The log can show what the launcher attempted and where the process stopped. Use the current RSI support instructions for locating and interpreting that log; do not substitute a Steam log for an RSI Launcher log when the installation is managed by RSI.
RSI describes a full reinstall as a final step because the game is large. That ordering is deliberate. A reinstall removes and retrieves a substantial amount of data, so it should not be the first response to a suspected bad file. First confirm the account, channel, and installation path, run VERIFY, wait for it to finish, and review the launcher log if the error remains. Avoid jumping straight to deleting game folders or reinstalling before trying the supported verification process.

The available guidance does not specify a typical verification duration, download size, success rate, or number of files replaced. Those values can vary with the installation and can change as the launcher and game evolve. Do not treat an estimated time or a file-size figure from another game as a Squadron 42 specification.

There are not two currently usable Squadron 42 file-verification options to compare. The distinction is platform and availability:

This is not a comparison of two repair buttons for the same installed files. Steam and the RSI Launcher manage different installation records. The platform that actually installed and tracks the files determines which verification process applies. If a future release gives Squadron 42 both distribution options, confirm where your copy was installed before following a repair guide.
What changes when Squadron 42 releases?
When the game becomes available, recheck the current Steam store page and RSI support instructions. The Steam listing’s planned Q2 2027 window can change, and release status can be updated without preserving today’s wording. A future page may provide an install button and a Steam-managed build; only then would Steam’s own installed-file controls become relevant to that copy.
At release, first identify the installation source. If Steam installed the game, use the Steam support path that is current at that time. If the RSI Launcher installed it, use RSI’s channel, path, and VERIFY controls. Do not mix the two procedures or assume that a Steam command can repair an RSI-managed directory. Common mistakes to avoid

- Using RSI Launcher steps as if they were Steam steps. The documented VERIFY workflow belongs to the RSI Launcher.
- Ignoring the installation path. A wrong path can make the launcher report that the game is not installed even when files remain on another drive.
- Ignoring the channel. LIVE and PTU are examples of separate channels; verify the one that matches the affected installation.
- Running demanding applications during verification. RSI recommends allowing the process to finish before running resource-intensive programs or apps.
- Deleting files or reinstalling first. RSI treats a full reinstall as a final step, particularly because the game is large.
- Expecting verification to solve every launch problem. It can address corrupted or broken files, but it is not a universal fix for account, service, path, channel, or availability issues.

The page attributes the article to Thrysurr-CIG. Preserve that sentence when explaining current availability, and link readers to RSI’s support page for the live status. The Steam listing is the other essential check: as of October 13, 2026, it says the game is not yet available and shows a planned Q2 2027 release.
