Yes, usually. The Openreach box on a full-fibre (FTTP) installation is an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), not a Wi-Fi router and not a traditional modem. It converts the fibre signal into Ethernet. You can normally connect that Ethernet handoff to the WAN/Internet port of your own router, then enter the broadband settings required by your internet service provider (ISP).

The important exceptions are your ISP’s own-router policy, authentication method, VLAN requirements and any bundled digital-voice service. The ONT stays installed at the property; your router is the part you may replace.

What the Openreach box actually does

An Openreach FTTP installation has two separate pieces of equipment:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • ONT: terminates the fibre entering the premises and presents an Ethernet service handoff.
  • Router: creates the home network, provides Wi-Fi, obtains an IP address, performs routing and firewall functions, and may provide telephone-service features.

Openreach describes the ONT as neither a router nor a traditional modem. On its own it does not provide Wi-Fi or a usable internet connection. It is powered equipment and should remain connected, with the active Ethernet socket (normally labelled LAN or PORT 1) used for the broadband service.

  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

The ONT is Openreach infrastructure. Openreach says it should not be removed and remains with the address when you move. Do not unplug fibre connectors, open the enclosure or attempt to relocate it without your provider’s instructions.

When using your own router is allowed

Whether a replacement router works is decided primarily by the ISP supplying your broadband, not by Openreach. Before buying equipment, check the provider’s policy for your exact plan and access network.

Policy can vary by plan

Some providers permit third-party routers if you obtain the required credentials. Vodafone, for example, allows non-Vodafone routers on some plans but requires its own router for Pro, 5G Broadband and plans that include Digital Voice. A provider may also limit technical support to its supplied equipment.

Support implications

BT Business states that third-party equipment is not supported by its main technical helpdesk and may need to be reconnected for fault diagnosis. Keep the supplied router, its power adapter and its configuration available. Reconnecting it is often the quickest way to show whether a fault is in the line or in your own equipment.

Router requirements for an Openreach FTTP connection

A suitable replacement must have more than a fast Wi-Fi rating. Verify every item below against your ISP’s current instructions.

Requirement Why it matters What to verify
Ethernet WAN/Internet port The ONT hands off service over Ethernet, not DSL or coaxial cable. Use a dedicated WAN port, with a speed at least equal to your broadband package.
PPPoE capability Some providers require the router to establish a PPPoE session before internet access is granted. Confirm that the firmware supports PPPoE and accepts the ISP-issued username and password.
VLAN tagging Some access networks identify broadband traffic with an 802.1Q VLAN tag. Check whether tagging is required, and enter the exact VLAN ID and priority supplied by the ISP.
IPv6 Your provider may deliver IPv6 as well as IPv4. Check the provider’s IPv6 mode, prefix-delegation and firewall guidance.
PPPoE performance Encryption, firewall and packet-processing limits can reduce throughput even when the WAN port is fast. Look for independent testing or the manufacturer’s documented routing and PPPoE limits for your service speed.
Voice compatibility Digital Voice may rely on an ISP-managed router or an analogue telephone adapter (ATA). Ask whether your own router can register the provider’s voice service; otherwise retain the supplied router for telephony.
Mesh and firmware features Replacing the router also changes Wi-Fi coverage, updates, parental controls and remote-management features. Confirm that the features you rely on work in router mode, not only in an access-point mode.

PPPoE: the credentials you may need

PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) is an authentication method used by some fibre providers. If your ISP uses it, the router must create the PPPoE session on its WAN interface; simply selecting “automatic IP” will not authenticate.

BT Business says a replacement router or firewall connected to an Openreach modem must be capable of establishing PPPoE with the supplied username and password. Your ISP may issue a username in a provider-specific format and a separate password. Copy both exactly, including punctuation and letter case.

Not every provider or access network uses the same combination of PPPoE and VLAN. Zen’s published information shows that these behaviours differ by network, so do not copy settings from another provider merely because both services use Openreach FTTP.

VLAN settings: why there is no universal Openreach value

VLAN tagging is an ISP configuration, not an Openreach-wide setting. Plusnet publishes an example requiring VLAN enabled, VLAN ID 101 and VLAN priority 0 for its fibre service. That value must not be treated as a default for every provider.

Enter a VLAN tag only when your ISP specifies one. An incorrect tag can produce a connection that appears physically linked but never authenticates. Some routers place VLAN controls under Internet, IPTV, IPTV/VLAN or advanced WAN settings; the label and available options vary by firmware.

  1. Locate the ONT. Identify the powered Openreach unit and the Ethernet socket currently used for broadband. It is commonly labelled LAN or PORT 1. Leave the fibre and power connections untouched.
  2. Power down only the equipment you are changing. Switch off the supplied router and your replacement router. The ONT can remain powered unless your ISP specifically asks you to restart it.
  3. Connect Ethernet. Plug a suitable Ethernet cable into the ONT’s active LAN/PORT 1 socket and the replacement router’s Ethernet WAN/Internet port. Do not use a numbered LAN port intended for local devices.
  4. Open the router’s setup page or app. Select the Internet/WAN connection type. Choose PPPoE if your ISP requires it; otherwise use the connection type the provider specifies.
  5. Enter credentials. Type the ISP-provided broadband username and password. Do not substitute your customer-account login unless the provider explicitly says they are the same.
  6. Apply VLAN settings when instructed. Enable 802.1Q/VLAN tagging and enter the provider’s VLAN ID and priority. For Plusnet’s published example, that is VLAN ID 101 and priority 0; other services may use different values or none.
  7. Configure IPv6. Select the IPv6 mode and prefix-delegation option documented by your ISP. Leave IPv6 disabled only if the provider says it is unsupported or your router cannot implement the required mode.
  8. Save and restart the WAN session. Wait for the router to report an authenticated internet connection. The ONT’s link lights and the router’s WAN light should indicate an Ethernet link, but lights alone do not prove that authentication succeeded.
  9. Test from a wired device. Check that a computer connected by Ethernet receives an address, can resolve domain names and can reach several sites. Test Wi-Fi separately after the wired connection works.
  10. Record the working configuration. Save the WAN type, VLAN values, DNS choices and firmware version. Keep the supplied router ready for support calls.

Digital Voice and telephone service

Internet access and telephone service are separate considerations. Openreach documentation says ATA and voice arrangements depend on the communications provider. A router that successfully authenticates broadband may still be unable to provide the telephone service included with your package.

Before disconnecting the ISP router

  • Ask whether your plan includes Digital Voice or another VoIP service.
  • Ask whether the provider publishes SIP credentials and supports third-party ATAs or routers.
  • Confirm whether emergency calling, battery-backup arrangements and number presentation depend on the supplied hardware.
  • Check where the telephone handset must connect: an RJ11 phone socket on the ISP router, a separate ATA or a provider-managed app.

If the provider does not support customer equipment for voice, keep the supplied router connected for telephony. In some installations it may be possible to use your own router for data while retaining the ISP router or an approved ATA for voice, but the provider must explain the supported topology.

Choosing a replacement router

Compare routers against the service and the ISP’s configuration, not just advertised Wi-Fi speed.

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Ethernet WAN speed Is the WAN port fast enough for the subscribed tier, now and after an upgrade?
PPPoE support and performance Can it authenticate with the required credentials, and can its processor sustain the package speed with firewall features enabled?
VLAN tagging Can you set an arbitrary Internet VLAN ID and priority, rather than only selecting a few television presets?
IPv6 Does it support the provider’s required address assignment and prefix delegation?
Wi-Fi coverage Will one unit cover the premises, or do you need wired access points or a mesh system?
Firmware and mesh features How often are security updates issued, and do mesh nodes preserve the WAN and VLAN features?
Voice compatibility Can it provide the ISP’s telephone service, or will the supplied router/ATA remain necessary?

Openreach lists FTTP services with advertised speeds up to 1,600 Mbps, but that is a provider-and-address-dependent maximum, not a typical speed or a guarantee for your line. Match the router to the tier actually available at your address and leave headroom for overheads and future upgrades.

Troubleshooting a failed connection

No link light on the router WAN port

  • Verify that the cable is in the ONT’s active LAN/PORT 1 socket and the router’s WAN/Internet port.
  • Try a known-good Ethernet cable and check whether the ONT or router port is disabled.
  • Reconnect the supplied router. If it also fails to obtain a link, contact the ISP rather than changing authentication settings.

Link is present, but PPPoE authentication fails

  • Re-enter the ISP username and password exactly, with no leading or trailing spaces.
  • Confirm that the WAN type is PPPoE, not DHCP or static IP.
  • Ask the ISP whether the account is locked to the supplied router’s MAC address or serial registration and whether they must clear that registration.
  • Check whether the provider requires a specific MTU; do not lower it speculatively because that can create fragmentation problems.

Authentication works only when VLAN is disabled or enabled

  • Use the provider’s documented VLAN requirement for your access network.
  • Check the VLAN ID and priority independently; a correct ID with an incorrect priority can still fail.
  • Make sure the tag is applied to the Internet WAN interface, not only to a guest, IPTV or LAN port.

Internet works, but some sites or devices fail

  • Check IPv6 configuration and test with IPv6 temporarily disabled only as a diagnostic step.
  • Review MTU and MSS settings if pages partially load, VPNs fail or large transfers stall.
  • Update router firmware, then retest with security, parental-control and traffic-inspection features enabled one at a time.

Broadband works but the phone does not

This is normally a voice-compatibility issue rather than an ONT fault. Reconnect the supplied router for telephone service and ask the provider which third-party voice arrangements, if any, are supported.

When keeping the supplied router is the better choice

Use the ISP router when your plan requires it, when Digital Voice is essential and unsupported elsewhere, or when you need the provider’s full diagnostic and replacement support. Your own router is most useful when the ISP permits it and you need capabilities such as stronger Wi-Fi coverage, advanced firewall rules, a preferred mesh system or local network controls that the supplied unit lacks.

Whatever you choose, leave the Openreach ONT in place, use its Ethernet handoff, and treat PPPoE, VLAN, IPv6 and voice settings as provider-specific rather than universal FTTP defaults.
