Yes, but not usually from a self-managed XRPL account that holds only a stablecoin. An XRPL account needs XRP for its reserve requirements and transaction fees. You can avoid personally holding XRP if a sponsor covers those on-ledger costs or a custodial service abstracts them. In either case, XRP still has a role in the arrangement; it is simply held or paid for by someone else.
Why a stablecoin-only XRPL account usually needs XRP
An XRPL stablecoin is an issued token, not an XRP balance. To hold one, an account establishes a trust line with the token’s issuer. The account itself is still an XRP Ledger account, and XRP is used to meet its reserve requirements and pay its transaction fees.
That distinction matters because having enough stablecoins to cover a payment does not necessarily give an account the XRP needed to submit that payment. The stablecoin is the asset being transferred; XRP is the asset the ledger uses for the account’s reserve and fee costs. A transaction can be rejected if the sender does not have enough XRP for its fee.
XRPL documentation describes account creation as occurring when enough XRP is sent to a valid, unfunded address. So a self-managed account cannot generally be started and operated simply by sending stablecoins to an empty address. The recipient needs an XRPL account arrangement that can meet the relevant on-ledger requirements.

What XRP pays for: reserves and transaction fees
Reserves and fees are separate costs. A reserve is XRP that must remain associated with an account or its ledger objects; it is not the same thing as a fee charged each time the account transacts. Transaction fees, by contrast, are specified in XRP and destroyed when the transaction is processed rather than paid to a validator or another party.
Account and trust-line reserves
XRPL.org’s reserves documentation lists a Mainnet base reserve of 1 XRP and an owner reserve of 0.2 XRP per qualifying item. A trust line is an on-ledger object, so adding trust lines can increase the XRP reserve requirement. XRPL documents an exception for a newly funded account: its first two trust lines can be created with only the base reserve.
These amounts are not permanent protocol constants. XRPL documentation says reserves can change, and other networks may use different values. Treat the figures as the current Mainnet values listed by that documentation, not as a promise that every account or network will always require the same XRP. Check the current reserve information for the network and account setup you intend to use.

Transaction fees
Every XRPL transaction has a fee specified in XRP. The fee is destroyed, and the amount can vary with network conditions. Therefore, a wallet or service should not be assumed to charge one fixed XRP amount for every transaction. Even an account whose reserve is already satisfied still needs sufficient XRP to cover the fee for a transaction it submits, unless a sponsor or service handles that cost.
Ways to use an XRPL stablecoin without personally holding XRP
There are three materially different arrangements. They differ in who holds the XRP, who controls the account, and who is responsible for costs. “I do not hold XRP” does not, by itself, mean that no XRP is needed anywhere in the transaction.

Self-managed account: direct control, direct funding responsibility
With a self-managed account, the user controls the keys used to authorize transactions. That control does not remove the ledger’s reserve or fee requirements. The account holder generally needs XRP available for those costs, in addition to the stablecoin they intend to hold or transfer.

This is the most straightforward arrangement to reason about: the account holder funds the account and is responsible for its on-ledger costs. It also makes clear why a stablecoin balance alone is not enough to guarantee that a transfer can be submitted.
Sponsorship: someone else covers specified on-ledger costs
XRPL supports sponsorship that can cover transaction fees, reserve requirements for ledger objects, or both. Under sponsorship, the sponsee can retain control of their own keys and account while the sponsor’s XRP remains in the sponsor’s account. The ledger records responsibility for the sponsored costs; sponsorship does not transfer XRP into the sponsee’s wallet.
That makes sponsorship different from an on-ramp that gives a user XRP to hold. It changes who bears the on-ledger cost, not whether XRP has a role in meeting that cost. Coverage can be limited: an arrangement may cover fees only, reserves only, or both. Do not assume a sponsor pays every cost just because it supports one sponsored transaction or one type of requirement.
Custody: the provider abstracts the ledger mechanics
A custodial wallet or exchange may let a customer use an XRPL stablecoin without personally managing an XRPL account or holding XRP for its underlying reserve and fee requirements. XRPL account documentation notes that private exchanges may keep customer XRP in a few shared XRPL accounts, rather than requiring each customer to fund a separate account reserve.
This does not establish that any particular provider supports a particular token or withdrawal route. Customer-facing balances and the underlying ledger arrangement are not the same thing. Before relying on custody, verify the exact token, network, deposit and withdrawal support, applicable fees, withdrawal conditions, and custody terms for that service.

How to decide which arrangement fits
Use the following checks before receiving or sending a stablecoin. They help distinguish a token balance you can see in an app from an account arrangement that can actually use the XRPL.
- Identify the network and token. Confirm that the asset is the XRPL-issued token you intend to use, not a similarly named token on another network. A stablecoin’s name alone does not establish the ledger or issuer.
- Establish who controls the account. Determine whether you will control the signing keys, a sponsor will support an account you control, or a provider will custody the account arrangement. This affects who can authorize transactions and who is responsible for account operations.
- For self-custody, plan for XRP. Check the applicable account reserve, any reserve impact from trust lines or other qualifying objects, and the XRP needed for transaction fees. Consult current network documentation because reserve values can change and fee amounts vary.
- For sponsorship, get the scope in writing. Confirm whether it covers fees, reserves, or both; which account objects or transactions qualify; and whether there are limits or conditions. The sponsee should not infer broad coverage from sponsorship of a single cost.
- For a custodial service, verify the exact route. Ask whether it supports deposits and withdrawals for the specific stablecoin on XRPL. Check the service’s fees, withdrawal rules, and custody terms rather than assuming that a displayed balance can be transferred directly to a self-managed XRPL account.
- Check the issuer’s token conditions. Determine whether the issuer requires authorization for a trust line, and review its transfer fees, freeze controls, and redemption terms. These conditions affect whether you can hold, transfer, or redeem the token.
A stablecoin is not a guarantee of redemption
“Stablecoin” describes an intended relationship between a token and an off-ledger asset; the label alone does not guarantee that a particular holder can redeem it. XRPL’s issuer guidance describes a token’s value as depending on the issuer’s promise to redeem it for a corresponding asset. The issuer’s terms and ability to honor that promise matter independently of whether an account has enough XRP to transact.
The issuer may also set conditions for holding and transferring a token. A trust line connects the holder’s account with the issuing account, and the issuer can require authorization before a user is permitted to hold the token. Issuers can configure transfer fees and freeze trust lines. Consequently, a successful account setup does not by itself establish that a token is unrestricted, redeemable on demand, or suitable for every use.

Evaluate the specific token and issuer rather than assuming all assets described as XRPL stablecoins have identical terms. The protocol-level mechanics explain how an issued token is represented and what account costs may apply; they do not verify a particular issuer’s redemption promise, fees, availability, or policies.
Common misunderstandings
- “I have a stablecoin balance, so I can send it.” Not necessarily. A self-managed XRPL account also needs to meet its XRP fee requirement, and its reserve requirements still apply.
- “The first trust lines are free of XRP requirements.” XRPL documents a first-two-trust-lines exception to the owner-reserve increase for a newly funded account. It does not eliminate the account’s base reserve or the need for XRP transaction fees.
- “Sponsorship means my wallet contains XRP.” Not in the arrangement described by XRPL. The sponsor’s XRP remains in the sponsor’s account while sponsorship covers specified costs for the sponsee.
- “A custodial app balance proves I can withdraw to any XRPL wallet.” It does not. Deposit and withdrawal support depends on the particular provider, token, and network route.
- “A stablecoin’s intended peg guarantees redemption.” Redemption depends on the issuer’s promise and terms, not on the token’s label alone.
What to remember before making a transfer
If you control the XRPL account yourself, plan on XRP for account reserves and transaction fees even when the asset you want to hold or send is a stablecoin. To avoid personally holding XRP, use a clearly defined sponsorship arrangement or a custodial service that supports the exact token and network. In either case, confirm who pays which costs, who controls the account, and what conditions the issuer places on the token.
