What an Xbox gift card balance can buy

An Xbox gift card does not remain a separate coupon after redemption. Microsoft says redeemed Xbox and Microsoft gift cards add value to the Microsoft account, and that account money can be spent through Microsoft Store online, on Windows, and on Xbox. 1. Sign in to the Microsoft account you will use for the game preorder or add-on.
2. Open Microsoft’s gift-card or code-redemption flow from that signed-in account.
3. Enter the Xbox gift-card code exactly as shown and submit it.

The backup is not a way to postpone an account-balance charge. It is there to complete the order when the balance does not reach the displayed total.

Buy add-ons and map packs with the same balance

Add-ons follow the same basic account rule: redeem the card to the purchasing Microsoft account, open the add-on listing, and choose the account balance during checkout. If a preorder has already been billed but the game has not yet released, Microsoft says cancellation is processed as a refund.
