Yes, but the method depends on the device. A Windows PC or compatible Windows handheld can install supported PC games through the Xbox PC app and run them locally. A supported smart TV does not install the Windows version; it uses the Xbox app to stream eligible games through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Availability depends on the exact device model, operating system, country, subscription entitlement, game catalog and controller support.

The distinction between local installation and cloud streaming is the key to avoiding disappointment. A PC downloads game files and uses its own processor and graphics hardware. A TV receives an interactive video stream from Microsoft’s cloud service, so the TV’s gaming performance is not equivalent to that of a gaming PC.

Microsoft describes the Xbox PC app as a route for Windows 11 gaming PCs and handhelds. A Game Pass subscription does not turn every console title into a native Windows game: the individual listing must include a PC version, and that version still has its own CPU, GPU, memory, storage and operating-system requirements.

Install a PC game locally
- Update Windows and sign in to the Microsoft account associated with your Game Pass subscription.
- Install or update the Xbox app for Windows, then sign in with the same account.
- Open the Game Pass catalog and filter or search for the title.
- Open the game’s product page and confirm that PC installation is listed. Read the minimum and recommended requirements, supported input methods and required storage.
- Select Install, choose an available drive when prompted, and allow the download to finish.
- Launch the game from the Xbox app or Windows Start menu. Keep the Xbox app and Windows updated if the title requires a newer service component.
Catalog membership and installation rights are title-specific. A game may be available on console or in the cloud without appearing in the PC catalog. Conversely, a PC listing does not imply that the same title can be streamed to a television.
Use cloud gaming on a PC
Cloud play is a separate path from a local PC install. It can be useful when a computer does not meet a game’s graphics requirements, but it relies on a supported browser or app route, an eligible subscription and a stable connection. The official Windows guidance explains the PC app and gaming routes; it does not establish a universal performance guarantee or one network-speed threshold for every game and region.
Using Game Pass on a Windows handheld
A Windows handheld that supports the Xbox PC app can install compatible PC titles in essentially the same way as a Windows desktop. The portable form factor does not guarantee that every title will run smoothly, fit comfortably on a small display or recognize its built-in controls.

Checks before installing on a handheld
- Confirm the device runs a supported Windows edition and can install the current Xbox PC app.
- Compare the game’s requirements with the handheld’s processor, graphics capability, memory and available storage.
- Check whether the game supports a gamepad, remappable controls, readable interface scaling and the handheld’s screen orientation.
- Allow for the device’s power and thermal limits. A title that meets a published minimum may still require lower resolution or graphics settings for an acceptable portable experience.
- Install updates for Windows, the Xbox app, controller firmware and the game before troubleshooting launch problems.
Cloud play may also be available through supported browser or app routes, which avoids downloading large files. It still requires an eligible subscription and compatible controls. Microsoft’s guidance confirms the broad Windows-handheld route, not an exhaustive model-by-model compatibility list. Non-Windows handhelds require separate verification; Windows app support should not be assumed merely because a device is marketed for PC gaming.
For an announced change in cloud access, Xbox’s August 27, 2025 Insider update described testing that let participating Core and Standard subscribers stream and play in new ways. That was an Insider test, not a permanent entitlement for every subscriber, so it should not be used as proof that all plans or devices have the same access.
Using Game Pass on a smart TV
A smart TV takes the cloud route. On a supported model, the Xbox app connects to Xbox Cloud Gaming and streams an eligible title; the TV does not download or execute the Windows PC build. You need a compatible controller, an account with the required subscription entitlement and a country where the app and service are offered.

The current Xbox TV guidance identifies select Samsung and LG smart TVs and select Amazon Fire TV devices. Support is selective, can differ by model year and region, and can change after the TV’s software is updated. Do not infer compatibility from a brand name alone.

On January 5, 2026, Xbox announced that its app would come to select Hisense and V homeOS-powered televisions during 2026. The announcement describes a rollout rather than proof that every model or country is already live. Verify the current app store listing and regional support for the exact television before treating the feature as available. The announcement is documented at Xbox’s Hisense and V homeOS update.
TV setup procedure
- Open Xbox’s current supported-device page and identify the exact television model, operating-system version and country. If the television is not listed, check whether a supported streaming device offers the Xbox app.
- Install the Xbox app from the TV or streaming device’s official app store, if it is available.
- Pair a compatible controller using the host device’s Bluetooth or USB instructions. Controller compatibility and pairing steps belong to the TV or streaming device, so follow its on-screen process.
- Open the app and sign in with the Microsoft account that holds the eligible Game Pass subscription.
- Choose a title marked as available for cloud play. A title’s console or PC availability alone is not enough.
- Start streaming and test input response before settling into a long session. If the stream is unstable, troubleshoot the connection and device software rather than trying to install the PC game on the TV.
Xbox’s April 23, 2025 announcement for the app on select LG televisions named Game Pass Ultimate members in more than 25 countries. That statement applies to that launch context and should not be generalized to every TV, plan or country. See the LG TV launch announcement for its stated scope.

Subscription and catalog rules
An active Game Pass subscription is required for most cloud games, but the exact entitlement matrix changes by plan, title, device and region. The available sources do not establish a complete, permanently valid table mapping every plan to every PC, handheld and TV feature.

- Microsoft account signed in to the active subscription.
- PC catalog availability for the chosen title.
- Enough storage and hardware that meets the game’s published requirements.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The game cannot be installed on a PC
- Check that the product page lists a PC version rather than only console or cloud access.
- Confirm that the signed-in Microsoft account owns the active entitlement.
- Update Windows and the Xbox app, then restart the app.
- Recheck free storage and the game’s minimum operating-system and hardware requirements.
The handheld installs the game but controls do not work
- Verify that Windows recognizes the built-in controller in its game-controller settings.
- Install the handheld maker’s control and firmware updates.
- Look in the game’s input settings for gamepad mode, remapping or an alternate control profile.
- Test an external compatible controller to distinguish a game-specific issue from a device-input issue.
The Xbox app is missing on a TV
- Search the device’s official app store using the exact model and country settings.
- Check Xbox’s current supported-device page rather than relying on the television brand.
- Install pending TV firmware updates and restart the device.
- If the native app is unavailable, investigate a supported streaming-device route; do not assume any generic HDMI stick will provide it.
Streaming starts but is unplayable
- Use the device’s network diagnostics and, where possible, a wired or stronger wireless connection.
- Pause other high-bandwidth activity on the same connection.
- Restart the TV, streaming device and router, then sign in again.
- Check whether the problem affects one title or every cloud title; a single-title issue may reflect catalog or service availability rather than the television.
Which route should you choose?
Choose a Windows PC when
You want local rendering, adjustable graphics settings, offline-capable play where the title supports it, or access to the broader range of PC controls and mods allowed by that game. You must provide the storage and hardware yourself.

Choose a Windows handheld when
Portability matters and you are willing to check each game’s performance and control layout. Local installs avoid dependence on a continuous cloud stream, while cloud play can save storage when the connection is dependable.
Choose a smart TV when
You want the simplest living-room setup and your exact TV or streaming device is supported. TV play is convenient but cloud-only: it depends on service availability, account entitlement, controller pairing and connection quality.
