Yes. Wi-Fi can support remote work if your internet service, wireless signal where you work, and security setup suit the tasks you do. Email and documents need less capacity than video meetings, large uploads, or several people sharing the connection. Check performance at your desk rather than assuming a fast broadband plan guarantees a reliable connection there.

Can you use Wi-Fi for remote work?

For most home-office tasks, Wi-Fi is a practical way to connect. Reliability depends on the entire connection: your internet service, the router and its placement, the Wi-Fi signal reaching your work area, and the number of devices using the network at once.

A connection that handles email may still struggle with frequent video calls or large file transfers. If calls break up or uploads stall, identify whether the problem follows your location in the home, happens only at busy times, or affects every device. Those clues help distinguish a Wi-Fi coverage issue from a capacity or service issue.

What internet speed do you need for remote work?

There is no single speed threshold that guarantees a good remote-work experience: applications, call layouts, video quality, and simultaneous users all matter. As a specific reference, Microsoft publishes bandwidth requirements for Teams per endpoint and by activity. Its table lists audio meetings at 10/10 Kbps minimum, 58/58 Kbps recommended, and 76/76 Kbps for best performance; one-to-one video at 150/150, 1,500/1,500, and 4,000/4,000 Kbps; and meeting screen sharing at 250/250, 2,500/2,500, and 4,000/4,000 Kbps, respectively. These are Teams figures, not universal requirements for remote work. Microsoft notes that actual use varies with meeting layout, resolution, frame rate, and other conditions, and says, “When bandwidth is insufficient, Teams prioritizes audio quality over video quality.” See Microsoft’s Teams network and bandwidth guidance.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Run multiple speed tests from the room and spot where you work, and note both download and upload results. Compare them with results from another location in your home. If speeds are consistently lower at your desk, the wireless link or obstacles between it and the router may be the issue. If results are poor everywhere, changing Wi-Fi placement may not fix a limitation in your internet service.

Which Wi-Fi band should you use for work?

Choose based on distance, walls, interference, and device compatibility—not just the largest speed number. Microsoft describes the main trade-offs this way:

  • Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
  • 2.4 GHz: Reaches farther and generally works better through obstacles, but offers less throughput and can be more congested. It can suit a desk farther from the router or basic tasks. Microsoft Support says, “In most cases, a 2.4 GHz network will work fine for basic tasks, such as surfing the web or using email.” Read Microsoft’s home Wi-Fi layout guidance.
  • 5 GHz: Offers faster throughput and more non-overlapping channels, but has shorter reach than 2.4 GHz. It is often a good choice when your work device is relatively near the router.
  • 6 GHz: Can offer high performance and low congestion near the router, but has shorter range and requires compatible Wi-Fi 6E equipment on both the router and client device.

Band names, availability, and controls vary by router. If your device lets you select a network band, test the suitable option at your work location and compare call stability as well as speed.

How do you improve Wi-Fi for video calls?

  1. Measure before changing anything. Run several speed tests at your desk and another location; record download and upload results and note whether problems occur at particular times.
  2. Improve the path to the router. If performance changes by location, place the router or access point in a central, elevated, open position. Reduce obstacles where practical, and move your work device closer if you can. Microsoft’s guidance covers placement and home layout.
  3. Try the band that fits the layout. Test 5 GHz for a nearby device, 2.4 GHz when reach and wall penetration matter more, or 6 GHz only with compatible equipment close enough to the router.
  4. Check network activity. Several people streaming, downloading, or joining calls can compete for capacity. If calls fail mainly when the connection is busy, consider how simultaneous use affects your setup. Microsoft also recommends checking whether a newer router or adapter may help in some situations. See Microsoft’s Teams call-quality guidance.
  5. Choose equipment only for the diagnosed problem. If a localized weak-signal area remains and router relocation is impractical, an extender may help. If an old router struggles with many simultaneous devices, compare a compatible replacement. Neither purchase can repair a weak broadband service by itself.
  6. Keep software and security current. Update router firmware and work devices, use WPA2 or WPA3 with strong non-default credentials, and follow your employer’s network and VPN requirements.

Is it safe to work on public Wi-Fi?

Public wireless networks carry more uncertainty than a network you control. When travelling, use a trusted network or cellular hotspot rather than an unknown open hotspot when practical. Verify that the hotspot is the real one—for example, confirm its name with the venue—and follow your employer’s policy on VPN use. Microsoft’s wireless-safety guidance discusses VPNs and cellular-data or hotspot alternatives: Be safer over wireless connections.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

For a home router, change default router and Wi-Fi passwords and use WPA2 or WPA3. CISA recommends those protections at minimum and disabling legacy WEP and WPA; its video-conferencing security guidance includes router security advice. Microsoft identifies WPA3 as the current standard and cautions against WEP and hidden SSIDs in its wireless safety guidance. A hidden network name is not a substitute for strong encryption and credentials.

If you handle small-business or company resources over public Wi-Fi, follow your organization’s secure-remote-access rules. The FTC’s small-business remote-access guidance discusses WPA2/WPA3 and VPN use. Use an employer-provided or employer-approved VPN when required; do not assume that installing an unrelated VPN satisfies workplace policy.

When should you use an extender, upgrade, or hotspot?

  • Try placement changes first when speeds or call quality vary by room. Moving a router to a central, elevated, open position costs nothing and can address obstacles between the router and desk.
  • Consider an extender when the weak signal is localized and you cannot reasonably relocate the router. An extender may improve reach, but it does not increase the capacity of your broadband service.
  • Consider a router upgrade when the existing router is old or cannot keep up with simultaneous use, after checking device compatibility and the likely cause of the problem. A new router cannot make an inadequate internet service faster.
  • Use cellular data or a phone hotspot as backup during travel or an outage if coverage is available. It may be slower than home broadband, and mobile plans can have data caps; check your plan and employer policy.
