As of 13 October 2026, Tesla’s published European availability list does not include Germany. Tesla’s current support page lists the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Croatia. It says the feature is blocked in regions where it has not been approved. The feature is supervised driver assistance, not autonomous driving: the person behind the wheel remains responsible and must be ready to take over.
Where Tesla says the feature is currently available
Tesla’s Netherlands support page currently calls the feature Tesla Assisted Driving. Its published list of supported European countries comprises:
- Netherlands
- Lithuania
- Estonia
- Denmark
- Belgium
- Slovenia
- Czech Republic
- Croatia
Germany is not on that list. This is the clearest current answer for a German resident or visitor: Tesla’s published information does not establish that the feature is available for use there. A Dutch approval, or availability in another European country, should not be treated as permission to use it in Germany.
Tesla says the vehicle may warn the driver when it enters a country where the system has not been approved, then switch the feature off. That country restriction is separate from whether a particular car is technically eligible. Tesla says availability can also depend on the vehicle’s hardware, software version, model, trim, model year and region; a software update may be required.

The list is useful for answering where Tesla currently says the system is available, but it is not a promise that every car can activate it in every listed country. Think of availability as two checks: the country must be supported, and the individual vehicle must meet Tesla’s requirements. Both can change, so check the destination and the exact car close to the time you plan to drive.
Why European availability does not mean EU-wide approval
There are two different questions: whether Tesla lists a country as supported, and whether an approval applies across the European Union or only in particular countries. The official announcements available as of 13 October 2026 show a Dutch approval followed by recognition in the Czech Republic, but do not establish that EU-wide authorization has been granted.
| Date | What the authority said | What it means for drivers |
|---|---|---|
| 10 April 2026 | The Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW) announced a type approval for Tesla FSD Supervised. RDW said the approval was then valid only in the Netherlands. | The Dutch decision did not by itself authorize use throughout the EU. |
| 21 September 2026 | The Czech Ministry of Transport said the Czech Republic recognized the Dutch provisional approval under Article 39 of Regulation (EU) 2018/858, subject to the approval’s conditions. | The announcement documents recognition in the Czech Republic; it does not establish a general EU-wide approval. |
| 13 October 2026 | Tesla’s current support page listed eight European countries, including the Netherlands and Czech Republic, but not Germany. | For a trip or purchase decision, use Tesla’s live country information and current guidance from the relevant national authority. |
In its 10 April announcement, RDW described a separate route for EU-wide use: an application to the European Commission, followed by a vote by member states and a majority in the responsible committee. The sources cited here do not establish the outcome of a later committee vote or a separate German recognition decision. Do not infer that either has happened from rollout forecasts or from the fact that a neighboring country allows the feature.

The country list and the approval history answer related but not identical questions. Tesla’s support page is practical guidance on where the feature is currently offered; an authority’s decision describes the approval or recognition in its jurisdiction. The Czech Ministry’s 21 September announcement, for example, documents recognition by the Czech Republic under Article 39 of Regulation (EU) 2018/858. It should not be generalized into permission for every EU country.
For Germany specifically, the careful answer is that the reviewed official information does not establish a German recognition decision, and Germany is absent from Tesla’s current country list. That is different from claiming that a future approval is impossible. It means drivers should not rely on an expected rollout, a report about another country or the Dutch decision as proof that they can activate the feature in Germany.

What “Full Self-Driving” means in Europe
The name can make the system sound more independent than the official descriptions support. RDW describes FSD Supervised as an advanced driver-assistance system that can take over multiple driving tasks, but says it is not autonomous or self-driving. The driver remains responsible, must participate in traffic and must be able to take control immediately. RDW has put the distinction plainly: “A vehicle with FSD Supervised is not self-driving.”
The Czech Ministry of Transport classifies the system as SAE Level 2, or partial driving automation. Level 2 assistance does not transfer responsibility for the driving task to the vehicle. The driver must continuously supervise the system and be ready to intervene whenever needed.

Tesla’s Dutch help page says the feature can change lanes, take the turn required by a navigation route, navigate around vehicles and objects, and make left and right turns. These are driving tasks performed under active supervision, not permission to stop monitoring the road. Tesla tells drivers to keep their eyes on the road, remain responsible and be ready to intervene. RDW says its monitoring checks whether the driver’s eyes are on the road and hands are available to take over.
- Keep watching the road: the system’s ability to steer or make a turn does not remove the need to monitor traffic.
- Stay ready to take control: the driver must be able to respond immediately if the system needs help or the situation changes.
- Do not treat the feature name as a legal or technical guarantee: the official descriptions characterize it as supervised assistance, not a self-driving vehicle.
That distinction matters on ordinary roads as much as it does in an emergency. A route-guided turn or lane change is still part of a supervised driving task; it does not make the driver a passenger. Do not plan to read, use a phone, sleep or otherwise disengage because the feature is active. The governing guidance from Tesla, RDW and the Czech Ministry all keeps the driver in the loop and responsible for taking control.

| Figure reported by RDW | Context |
|---|---|
| More than 3,000 hours | RDW said its testing took place on test tracks and public roads, across different road types, complex and busy urban traffic, and varied and extreme weather. |
| More than 1,000 test runs | RDW said the runs were conducted in accordance with European regulations. |
| 1.8 million kilometres | RDW said its assessment included European driving data collected with FSD Supervised. |
| Nearly 40,000 vehicles and approximately 24 million kilometres | In a statement dated 17 June 2026, RDW said that since type approval, nearly 40,000 Teslas equipped with FSD Supervised had driven approximately 24 million kilometres in the Netherlands without relevant incidents. |
RDW also said it independently reviewed Tesla’s data-collection and statistical-analysis processes and used its own tests and equipment. The 17 June incident report is a dated account of the kilometres and incidents reported at that time; it does not mean that risk is zero or predict what will happen on a particular drive.
The numbers describe different parts of the authority’s work and should not be collapsed into one safety score. The more than 3,000 hours and 1,000-plus runs refer to RDW testing in varied settings. The 1.8 million kilometres refers to European driving data included in its assessment. The approximately 24 million kilometres were a later Netherlands usage figure reported by RDW on 17 June after type approval. None of those figures changes who is responsible behind the wheel.
How to check whether your Tesla can use it on a European trip
- Check the destination country, not just your home country. Consult Tesla’s current country availability information and the destination country’s authority guidance. Germany is absent from Tesla’s eight-country list as of 13 October 2026.
- Check your specific car. Confirm with Tesla that the vehicle’s hardware, software version, model, trim, model year and region meet the requirements. Country-level availability alone does not guarantee that every Tesla qualifies.
- Confirm the software is current. Tesla says an update may be necessary. Check the vehicle’s software status and Tesla’s eligibility information before relying on the feature during a journey.
- Plan for it to be unavailable at a border. Tesla says the feature will warn the driver and then switch off when the car enters a country where approval has not been granted. Be prepared to drive without it.
- Supervise continuously whenever it is active. Keep your attention on the road and be prepared to take control. The system’s presence does not transfer driving responsibility.
If the feature is missing, unavailable or switches off, first check whether the country is supported and whether the vehicle meets Tesla’s requirements. Then verify the car’s software status and ask Tesla to confirm the eligibility of that exact vehicle. A border warning or shutdown is not evidence that the vehicle has malfunctioned; it may reflect the country restriction Tesla describes.
For a cross-border trip, check both the country where you begin and each country you expect to enter. Do not assume that activation in one country will continue after a border crossing. Tesla says a vehicle entering a region without approval will warn the driver and then disable the feature; leave yourself ready to complete the drive manually, without relying on it to remain active.
If you are comparing cars before buying, ask Tesla about the specific vehicle rather than relying on a general statement that “FSD” is available in Europe. Country support, hardware, software version, model, trim, model year and region can all matter. A software update may be needed, but an update alone does not override a country restriction.

Do European and US versions work the same way?
No one should assume they are identical. RDW says European and US vehicles have different software versions and that the respective FSD Supervised versions are not comparable one-to-one. A description of what a US-market car does, or a US owner’s experience, therefore cannot establish the behavior, availability or legal status of the European version.
For a European vehicle, rely on the current Tesla information applicable to its region and the rules in the country where it is being driven. Even where Tesla lists the feature as available, the driver remains responsible for supervising it and taking control when necessary.
This is particularly important when watching demonstrations or reading accounts from owners abroad. They may describe another software version, another vehicle configuration and a different country’s regulatory status. Such accounts can illustrate one owner’s experience but cannot establish what a particular European car can do or whether the feature is permitted on a German road.

Does the Dutch approval allow Tesla FSD Supervised throughout the EU?
No such EU-wide authorization is established here. RDW said on 10 April 2026 that its approval was then valid only in the Netherlands and described a separate process for EU-wide use. On 21 September 2026, the Czech Ministry of Transport announced that the Czech Republic recognized the Dutch provisional approval under Article 39 of Regulation (EU) 2018/858. That Czech recognition does not by itself establish approval across the EU.
Is Tesla Full Self-Driving autonomous in Europe?
No. RDW says a vehicle with FSD Supervised is not self-driving, and the Czech Ministry of Transport classifies it as SAE Level 2 partial driving automation. The driver must continuously supervise the system, remain responsible and be ready to take control.
Will Tesla Assisted Driving keep working when I cross a border?
Tesla says the vehicle may warn the driver and then switch the feature off in a country where it has not been approved. Check the status of every destination country before travelling and be prepared to drive without the feature.

No. RDW says the European and US vehicles have different software versions and that the versions are not comparable one-to-one. A US owner’s experience does not establish the European car’s features, availability or legal status.
Does country availability mean my particular Tesla can use the feature?
Not necessarily. Tesla says eligibility can depend on hardware, software version, model, trim, model year and region, and that a software update may be required. Confirm requirements for the exact vehicle with Tesla.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Tesla’s published European list as of 13 October 2026 includes eight countries but not Germany. A Dutch approval and Czech recognition do not establish EU-wide permission or German availability. Even where supported and eligible, Tesla Assisted Driving is supervised Level 2 driver assistance: the driver must keep watching the road and remain ready to take control.
