Not as a general rule. Tesla’s guidance for Autopilot and Tesla Assisted Driving Basic says to keep your hands on the steering wheel. Tesla’s newer Tesla Assisted Driving (TAD) page requires eyes on the road and readiness to intervene, but does not explicitly authorize hands-off-wheel use. TAD is available only in certain listed countries, and its presence or requirements depend on the car and software.
What “hands-free” means here
Hands-free wheel contact is not the same as eyes-off-road driving or autonomous operation. Tesla describes its driver-assistance features as supervised: the driver must stay attentive, watch the road, be ready to intervene, and remain responsible for the vehicle. Do not treat an assistance feature as permission to look away, use a phone, sleep, or hand responsibility to the car.
UN Regulation No. 171 describes Driver Control Assistance Systems as systems that assist rather than take over the driving task: “DCAS assist the driver, when operated within the system boundaries, but do not completely take over the driving task, thus the responsibility remains with the driver.” The regulation classifies these systems as SAE Level 2 partial automation. What Tesla says drivers must do
Autopilot and Tesla Assisted Driving Basic
Tesla’s UK support guidance says these are driver-assistance features requiring active supervision, not autonomous driving. It tells drivers to stay alert, keep their hands on the steering wheel, and maintain control. If the car detects insufficient steering-wheel torque, it issues escalating audio and visual prompts; repeatedly ignoring warnings can lock out Autopilot for the rest of that trip.

Tesla describes Autosteer as intended for motorways with a centre divider and clear lane markings. Its guidance also says the driver must hold the wheel and signal to initiate an assisted lane change. These instructions are from Tesla’s UK support page; they do not establish identical behavior for every model or regional software version. Tesla Assisted Driving
Tesla’s newer TAD page describes a supervised package that can perform route-following maneuvers, lane changes, turns, and parking assistance. It requires the driver to keep eyes on the road, be ready to intervene, and remain responsible. The page does not expressly say drivers may keep their hands off the wheel, so it is not confirmation that hands-free wheel operation is approved.

Where Tesla Assisted Driving is listed as available
Tesla’s Netherlands support page lists TAD in eight countries:
- Netherlands
- Lithuania
- Estonia
- Denmark
- Belgium
- Slovenia
- Czech Republic
- Croatia
Tesla says activation and use in other countries depend on further development and regulatory approval, and that the feature is blocked in unapproved regions. This is Tesla’s published list, not a guarantee that every vehicle in those countries is eligible. Vehicle configuration and software can affect availability. How to check your own Tesla
- Confirm the country. Compare your location with Tesla’s current TAD availability information; do not assume that “Europe” has one uniform approval status.
- Check the exact vehicle. Review the car’s onboard owner’s manual and Tesla’s regional support information for its model, trim, model year, hardware, and software. Eligibility and feature behavior can vary.
- Follow the instructions shown for your car. If the manual or prompts require hands on the wheel, keep them there. Continue to monitor the road and be prepared to take control even when the vehicle performs a maneuver.
Why European rules can affect feature behavior
Regional approval can affect which functions are available and how they work. As a historical example—not a complete account of current rules—a Tesla service bulletin dated 29 July 2022 addressed a Navigate on Autopilot behavior that could attempt an assisted lane change without the driver’s turn-signal input. The bulletin concerned specified model years and configurations and noted that certain regulations required the driver to initiate assisted lane changes manually. Do not infer permission to drive hands-free from a feature or package name. Tesla’s cited guidance describes the relevant assistance as supervised and non-autonomous; regional availability and the specific driver instructions still matter. For the current requirements, use the manual on the vehicle touchscreen and Tesla’s support page for your country and feature.
