Yes, SteamOS can be used for everyday desktop tasks, but Valve does not position it as a replacement for a conventional desktop operating system. It is an Arch Linux-based Valve system with a KDE Plasma desktop mode where users can install other launchers and software. Its official support is centered on specific gaming devices, so using it on another PC requires checking support for that exact hardware.
What SteamOS is—and what “Arch Linux-based” means
SteamOS is Valve’s operating system, built on Arch Linux. That describes its Linux foundation; it does not make SteamOS simply an unmodified Arch installation. Valve combines open-source system components with Valve software, including the proprietary Steam Client. The downloadable PC image is therefore not wholly open source: Valve’s terms for the Steam Client Backup Image grant personal-use rights and prohibit redistribution without a separate license. See Valve’s SteamOS download page and terms.
SteamOS includes a desktop mode, and Valve says users can install other launchers and software there. That makes web browsing, file management, and compatible desktop applications possible in principle. Whether it fits your routine depends on the applications and hardware you need, not just on the fact that it has a desktop interface.
Can SteamOS handle daily desktop use?
For a PC primarily used to play games, with occasional desktop tasks, SteamOS may be a practical fit—especially on hardware Valve supports. If your computer is also a work machine that depends on particular applications, peripherals, or a broad range of hardware support, verify those needs before switching. Valve’s own FAQ states: “Users should not consider SteamOS as a replacement for their desktop operating system.”
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
This distinction is useful: SteamOS has a desktop mode, but Valve’s product and support model remain focused on gaming and supported devices. Do not assume that every application available on another desktop OS, or every Linux application, will work smoothly in SteamOS.
Can you install SteamOS on a PC?
Valve provides a PC installation image on its SteamOS download page. Before installing it on an existing computer, check Valve’s current guidance for the exact hardware. Official support is not a blanket promise that all PCs or components will work.

- Check the device first. Look up Valve’s current SteamOS device and support information for your specific PC or handheld. Valve says support has improved for other AMD-powered handhelds and desktops in SteamOS 3.8, but that does not certify every AMD system or every configuration.
- Check your games. Valve says the vast majority of the Steam library runs through Proton, the compatibility layer SteamOS uses for many Windows games. Valve’s FAQ says “over 18,000 titles last we checked”; it does not state when that count was measured, so treat it as a qualified Valve figure, not a current total or a guarantee for an individual game. Check the current compatibility status of the titles you rely on.
- Check your desktop software and peripherals. Confirm that the applications and devices you need work in SteamOS before making it your main system. A working desktop interface alone does not establish compatibility.
- Use Valve’s download page for the image and terms. Avoid assuming that third-party copies have the same provenance or license. The Steam Client Backup Image terms restrict use to personal use and prohibit redistribution without a separate Valve license.
Which devices are officially supported?
Valve’s SteamOS FAQ names Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and Legion Go S as devices officially “Powered by SteamOS.” The same FAQ mentions improved compatibility with other AMD-powered handhelds and desktops in SteamOS 3.8, but does not define that as universal support. Device support can change, so consult Valve’s current guidance for your exact model before installing.
Using a Steam Deck as a desktop
A Steam Deck is an optional way to use SteamOS without installing it on another PC. Valve lists the Steam Deck OLED as running SteamOS 3, based on Arch Linux, with KDE Plasma desktop mode. Its specifications include USB-C DisplayPort output, which allows connection to an external display. A keyboard and mouse can make desktop tasks more practical, but check compatibility for any dock or peripheral you plan to use; Valve’s display-output specification does not guarantee every third-party accessory will work.
