Yes. Xbox players can install and use Starfield Creations, Bethesda’s supported in-game mod and content system. However, achievements are disabled by default when a Creation is active unless that specific Creation carries the Achievement Friendly label.

If achievements matter on a particular save, check the live label for every Creation in Starfield’s Creations menu or its Bethesda Creations listing before installing it. A Creation becoming friendly later will not unlock achievements retroactively on a save that already used Creations.

What “mods” means on Starfield for Xbox

On Xbox, the supported way to add player-made or extra content to Starfield is the in-game Creations system. You open Creations from Starfield’s menu, browse available content, and install or manage it without using external mod managers or manually copying files.

That support is part of the Xbox version itself. The Xbox store listing identifies Starfield as optimized for Xbox Series X|S and lists Xbox achievements as a capability: Xbox Starfield listing. Access through Game Pass can depend on the current plan and your region, so check the live store listing for availability and subscription terms.

In this article, “mods” means Creations installed through that supported system. PC-only modding instructions, file edits and third-party tools do not apply to an Xbox installation. Xbox players should also expect the catalog, compatibility and labels to be controlled through Bethesda’s service rather than through a separate console file system.

Do Starfield Creations disable Xbox achievements?

Bethesda’s rule is conditional, not absolute. Its support answer states: Creations will disable achievements in Starfield unless they are tagged as ‘Achievement Friendly.’ Read that as a per-Creation check:

Creation status Achievement effect What you should do
Achievement Friendly Bethesda identifies the Creation as not blocking achievements under the current rules. Confirm the label is still present before installing and playing on an achievement-focused save.
No Achievement Friendly label Assume achievements are disabled while that Creation is installed or active. Do not use it on the save where you want to earn Xbox achievements.
Status unclear or different from the listing The game’s current label is the relevant information; an old description or video may be out of date. Pause installation and verify the live in-game or Bethesda listing first.

The policy is documented in Bethesda Support’s answer about Creations and achievements. It does not say that every Xbox Creation permanently blocks achievements. It says the default is a block unless the individual item is marked friendly. A creator’s reputation, a high download count or a low price does not substitute for the label.

How the Achievement Friendly exception works

Achievement Friendly is a designation attached to an individual Creation, not a switch that makes all installed content safe. Bethesda introduced the option in its November 19, 2024 Starfield update for eligible Creations released through the Verified Creators program. The announcement explains that certain Creations would no longer block achievements; it did not make every Creation achievement-compatible. See Bethesda’s November 19, 2024 update announcement.

Because the designation is item-specific, inspect each Creation you plan to use. A friendly item in a bundle or a creator’s catalog does not automatically make another item from that creator friendly. Likewise, a Creation that was safe at one point can have a different status after an update, so use the current label shown in the game or on the live Bethesda listing rather than relying on an old screenshot, guide or forum post.

Verified Creator status also does not mean every release from that creator qualifies. The relevant question is whether the particular listing you are about to install carries the label. If a listing is paid, free, newly updated or part of a larger collection, those facts alone do not determine achievement eligibility.

What the label does not guarantee

  • It does not make a non-friendly Creation safe merely because you install it alongside a friendly one.
  • It does not restore achievements to an earlier save that already used Creations.
  • It does not mean a version-history problem is impossible; Bethesda has a separate support article for warnings that can appear even with a friendly Creation.
  • It does not authorize PC troubleshooting steps on Xbox. Console players must use the in-game controls and Xbox-specific support guidance.

Set up an achievement-safe Xbox save

If your priority is earning achievements, separate that goal from experimentation with unverified or non-friendly content. The following process keeps the decision tied to the save you care about.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose the save first. Decide which character and progression path you intend to use for achievement progress. Keep a backup save from before adding any Creation when possible. A separate test character is safer than trying to reconstruct a long campaign later.
  2. Open Creations in Starfield. Use the game’s Creations menu, not a PC guide or external file-management method. Review both installed and available items so an old download is not overlooked.
  3. Inspect every item. Open each desired Creation’s details and look for the exact Achievement Friendly label. You can also check the corresponding Bethesda Creations listing. Record the title and version if you are installing several items, which makes later audits easier.
  4. Install only items that are currently friendly. If even one required item lacks the label, treat the combination as achievement-blocking and install it on a separate, non-achievement save instead. Do not assume that disabling one item leaves the rest of the save’s history unaffected.
  5. Recheck after updates. Before a long play session or after a Creation update, confirm that the label and installed version still match what you expect. Updates can change files, listings or the relationship between a current item and an earlier version.
  6. Start playing only after the check. Do not assume that uninstalling a non-friendly item later will turn every achievement attempt on the same save into a valid one.

Bethesda cautions that using Creations can cause issues and explains that they can be deleted or disabled from the in-game Creations menu. Its uninstall instructions are at Bethesda’s Starfield Creation removal guide. Removing a Creation can also affect a save that depended on its items or changes, so preserve an earlier save before cleaning up whenever possible.

Can a later status change unlock missed achievements?

No. Bethesda’s November 2024 announcement explicitly says: Achievements will not retroactively unlock on previous game saves with Creations, even if those Creations are now achievement friendly. The important detail is the save’s history. If a character’s save was played with Creations that disabled achievements, changing the item’s status later does not award the achievements you would have earned earlier.

For that reason, do not use a non-friendly Creation while assuming you can wait for a future update and then continue the same character for a clean achievement record. If an achievement run matters, keep it separate from a modded test character from the beginning. A later clean installation may allow future progress under the current rules, but it cannot rewrite the earlier history Bethesda describes.

What to do if Starfield says achievements are disabled

A warning can have more than one cause. First compare your installed list with the current labels, then consider whether an item was updated from an older version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Normal non-friendly content

  1. Open the Creations menu and review every installed item.
  2. Remove or disable any Creation that is not marked Achievement Friendly.
  3. Restart or return to the game only after the non-friendly content has been removed, then check whether the warning persists.

Do not infer that the warning was harmless simply because one item in the list is friendly. Bethesda’s default rule applies unless each relevant Creation is covered by the friendly designation. If you cannot identify which item caused the warning, the safest achievement-focused approach is to remove all non-essential Creations, preserve a clean save and add items back only after checking their labels.

A friendly Creation that used to be a different version

Bethesda is investigating a case in which a player sees the disabled-achievements message after downloading a Verified Creation that was previously available as a free Creation. In that situation, its support guidance says to remove non-friendly Creations and, for an updated Creation, remove the previous version before playing. Read the current instructions in Bethesda’s “Achievements are disabled” troubleshooting article.

The practical issue is version history: the current friendly listing may not erase the effect of an older, non-friendly copy that remains installed. Compare names and versions carefully, and do not leave both an old and a new copy active while troubleshooting.

The same support article includes a contentcatalog.txt deletion step for PC. That is not an Xbox repair procedure. Xbox players should use the in-game Creations controls and the version-removal guidance instead; do not attempt to apply PC file instructions to the console.

If an achievement itself is not unlocking

Once your Creation list is clean, use Bethesda’s Xbox-specific achievement troubleshooting steps for the remaining issue: What do I do if an Achievement is not unlocking on Xbox? Keep in mind that a clean-up after the fact cannot promise retroactive credit for progress made while achievements were disabled.

Friendly versus non-friendly: practical choices

Your priority Recommended approach Main trade-off
Earn achievements on one character Use no Creations except those currently labeled Achievement Friendly. You have fewer content options and must recheck labels after updates.
Experiment with gameplay changes or new content Use a separate character or backup save for Creations without the friendly label. Progress and achievements on that modded path may not count toward a clean run.
Use a Creation that changed versions Check the current label and remove the older version if Bethesda’s warning applies. You may need to revisit a save or rebuild your installed list.
Recover from a disabled-achievements warning Audit and remove non-friendly content through the Xbox Creations menu, then follow Bethesda’s current support guidance. Removing content can affect a save that depended on it; preserve an earlier save where possible.

Common questions about Xbox Creations and achievements

Are all Starfield Xbox mods blocked from achievements?

No. The block is the default, but a Creation specifically tagged Achievement Friendly is the stated exception.

Where should I check a Creation’s status?

Check the live details in Starfield’s Creations menu or the corresponding Bethesda Creations listing immediately before installing.

Does a Verified Creator label make every item safe?

No. Bethesda introduced Achievement Friendly for eligible Creations, not automatically for every release by a Verified Creator. Check each listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I earn achievements after uninstalling a non-friendly Creation?

Removing it may clear the current cause of a warning, but Bethesda does not promise retroactive achievements for earlier save progress. Treat a save that used non-friendly content as unsuitable for a guaranteed clean achievement run.

Can a paid Creation disable achievements?

Price is not the deciding factor. A paid or free Creation must be judged by its current Achievement Friendly label.

Do PC fixes work on Xbox?

No. In particular, Bethesda’s contentcatalog.txt deletion instruction is explicitly for PC. Xbox users should not delete console files; use the in-game Creations menu and the Xbox support steps instead.

What if the label changes after I download it?

Stop and recheck the listing before continuing the achievement save. Bethesda’s rule is based on the Creation’s current designation, while earlier save history still controls whether missed achievements can be recovered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Starfield mods on Xbox without disabling achievements?

Do Achievement Friendly Creations work on Xbox Series X|S?

Yes. Starfield supports Creations on Xbox, and Xbox lists the game as optimized for Xbox Series X|S with Xbox achievements.

Will Bethesda restore achievements if a Creation becomes friendly later?

No. Bethesda says achievements will not retroactively unlock on previous saves that used Creations, even if those Creations later become Achievement Friendly.

What should I do when a friendly Creation still triggers the warning?

Remove non-friendly items, check whether an older version of an updated Creation remains installed, and follow Bethesda’s current Xbox guidance. Do not use the PC-only contentcatalog.txt step on Xbox.

The Bottom Line

Xbox supports Starfield Creations, but achievements are disabled by default unless each installed Creation is marked Achievement Friendly. Check the live label for every item, keep achievement and experimental saves separate, and remember that later status changes cannot award missed achievements retroactively.
