Sometimes—but an installed copy is not necessarily licensed for ongoing use. Intuit says an inactive Desktop Plus license prevents you from editing company data, although you can export existing data. Your company file remains stored on your device; reactivating or buying a new license can restore it to a readable QuickBooks Desktop format. Whether you can renew or buy a plan also depends on the product, country, and version.
What happens when a QuickBooks Desktop subscription expires?
Intuit’s subscription guidance distinguishes access to the program from access to your data. Desktop Plus can be used through the end of its current billing period. After the license becomes inactive, you cannot edit company data, but Intuit says you can export existing data. The program being installed on your computer does not, by itself, provide permission to keep editing.
Intuit says the company file remains on your device when access ends. That does not mean the inactive program can open it for normal work: reactivating the subscription or purchasing a new license can return the file to a readable QuickBooks Desktop format. See Intuit’s subscription and support FAQ and license information.
Can you renew or buy QuickBooks Desktop now?
Availability depends on whether you are an existing subscriber and which product you need. Intuit’s U.S.-only sales change took effect after September 30, 2024. Existing customers can continue renewing the listed subscriptions, but new U.S. customers cannot subscribe to those products. Enterprise remains available by subscription.

| Product | Existing U.S. subscribers | New U.S. subscribers |
|---|---|---|
| QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus | Can continue renewing, subject to account terms. | New subscriptions stopped after September 30, 2024. |
| QuickBooks Desktop Premier Plus | Can continue renewing, subject to account terms. | New subscriptions stopped after September 30, 2024. |
| QuickBooks Desktop Mac Plus | Can continue renewing, subject to account terms. | New subscriptions stopped after September 30, 2024. |
| QuickBooks Desktop Enhanced Payroll | Can continue renewing, subject to account terms. | New subscriptions stopped after September 30, 2024. |
| QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise | Subscription availability depends on the account. | Still available by subscription, according to Intuit. |
These limits describe U.S. sales; Intuit says the decision does not apply globally. Check the subscription and renewal details in your Intuit account rather than assuming a general policy describes your particular billing status. For the dated product list, see Intuit’s notice on buying QuickBooks Desktop as a new U.S. subscriber.
Does your version still receive support and updates?
Subscription status and version support are separate questions. An active subscription does not make every release year supported, and an older copy may launch even after connected services and updates end.

QuickBooks Desktop 2023
Intuit discontinued Desktop 2023 after May 31, 2026. After that date, Intuit says support, integrated services, and critical security updates ended for that version. Services such as payroll, payments, online banking, backup, or live support may therefore be affected. Intuit’s 2023 service discontinuation policy gives the applicable details.

Intuit revised its release process: it says Desktop 2024 and Enterprise 24.0 will not be discontinued on the former May 2027 schedule. They are on a continuous-update path, with support, updates, and security patches provided through that revised process. Current subscribers should accept in-product updates. What to check before canceling or changing plans
- Identify the product. Confirm whether your license is Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus, Enterprise, an older standalone license, or a payroll subscription. The renewal and sales policies are not interchangeable.
- Check your account status. Look up the plan’s renewal details and whether it is active, still within its billing period, suspended, or expired. Intuit’s general FAQ cannot establish the status of an individual account.
- Find the release year. Verify which version is installed and whether it still receives support and connected services.
- List the services your workflow uses. Check dependencies such as payroll, payments, online banking, backup, and live support before deciding that an older release will meet your needs.
- Protect the company file and export what you need. Make a backup and export relevant data before changing a license or migrating. Keeping the file on your computer is not the same as having an active license to edit it.
What can you do if you no longer want the subscription?
If you need to keep working in QuickBooks Desktop, renewing an eligible existing plan is the most direct route, subject to your account terms. If you are choosing a new product, Enterprise remains available by subscription in the U.S.; QuickBooks Online is another option to evaluate if a cloud workflow suits your business. The available facts do not establish a universal best choice or a complete cost comparison.
Compare options against your actual needs: whether you can renew your current plan, which Desktop features your work depends on, whether the target version is supported, which connected services you require, and the total subscription cost. Before migrating, preserve your source file and confirm that the destination can support your workflow.
