Usually, yes. PS5 games and your digital PS4 library move across the PS5 family, while most PS4 games also run on PS5. Accessories are more conditional: PS5 games require a DualSense controller, disc games require a drive, PS VR needs the older PS4 Camera and an adaptor, and covers, stands and drives must match the console’s CFI model group.
Use the compatibility checks below before you move a library or buy an accessory for a slim PS5, PS5 Digital Edition or PS5 Pro.

Do PS5 games and PS4 games carry over?
PS5 games
Your PS5 game library is not tied to one shell design. A game purchased digitally can be downloaded on another PS5 when you sign in with the owning account, whether the replacement is the original chassis, a slim model, a Digital Edition or a PS5 Pro. Physical PS5 games work on a console equipped with a compatible disc drive; they cannot be used on a drive-less Digital Edition.

PlayStation describes the “overwhelming majority” of more than 4,000 PS4 games as playable on PS5. That is the platform holder’s current count, not an independently audited total, and the catalog can change. A small number of titles are explicitly PS4-only. Others may show errors, unexpected behavior or lose functions that existed on PS4.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Check the game’s PlayStation Store listing and any title-specific support note before buying a physical copy or an accessory for it. Compatibility is a property of the individual game, not a guarantee for every PS4 release.
Features that may not carry over
PlayStation lists limitations affecting some PS4 features, including the PS4 SHARE menu, tournaments, In-Game Live from PlayStation, the Second Screen app and game companion apps. A game can therefore launch and remain playable while a peripheral feature is unavailable.
Disc requirements on each PS5 type
Disc-based PS5 and PS4 games
A disc game needs an optical drive. On a disc-equipped PS5, insert a PS4 disc to install or start the game and leave that disc in the drive whenever you play. The same practical rule applies to a physical PS5 game.

Digital Edition limitations
A standard PS5 Digital Edition has no drive, so it cannot install or authenticate PS4 or PS5 discs. Digital purchases and compatible transferred data remain usable. Do not assume that an external USB optical drive will solve this; the supported removable drive is a model-specific PS5 accessory described below.
Adding a drive to newer models
PlayStation lists its removable disc drive for PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 slim consoles and PS5 Pro. Pairing the drive with the console requires an internet connection during setup. Confirm the CFI number printed on the console before ordering, because an older Digital Edition is not covered by that compatibility statement.

Why a DUALSHOCK 4 may appear not to work
Using a DUALSHOCK 4 with a PS5 game is not a pairing fault; it is a generation rule. The controller can navigate the system and play compatible PS4 software, but PS5 software requires DualSense. If a game has both PS4 and PS5 versions, launch the PS4 version when you need to use DUALSHOCK 4.

Specialty controls
PlayStation says officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games. “Officially licensed” still does not mean every button, force-feedback mode or game is guaranteed, so check the peripheral maker’s model page and the title’s support information.

Using PS VR and older camera equipment
PS VR on PS5 uses the PS4 PlayStation Camera, not the newer PS5 HD Camera. The compatible camera models are CUH-ZEY1 and CUH-ZEY2, and a PlayStation Camera adaptor is required. PlayStation’s support information says the adaptor is available at no purchase cost.
Set up the PS VR headset, the supported PS4 Camera and the adaptor together. Selected games also need PlayStation Move controllers or support the PS VR Aim controller. PlayStation recommends DUALSHOCK 4 for the best PS VR experience. The PS5 HD Camera does not replace the PS4 Camera for PS VR.

Moving games and data to the new console
Transfer over your network
- Connect the old and new PS5 consoles to the same network. A wired connection is preferable when available; Wi-Fi is supported for transferring compatible digital games and data.
- Sign in on the new console with the account used for your purchases. Keep both consoles powered on while the transfer runs.
- Use the PS5 system’s data-transfer function to select the games and data to copy. Keep the consoles connected until the system reports completion.
- Open each transferred game once and apply any available update. Check the title’s store listing if a PS4 game displays a compatibility warning or missing feature.
Use USB extended storage
PS5 accepts USB extended-storage devices rated for SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster, with capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB. PlayStation warns that it cannot guarantee every device will work, so a drive meeting the specification is not an absolute compatibility promise.
- PS4 games can be installed and played directly from USB extended storage.
- PS5 games can be moved there to free internal space, but they must be copied back to console storage before you can play them.
- A drive previously formatted as extended storage on a PS4 or another PS5 can be connected without reformatting.
Safely disconnect the drive from the old console before moving it. If the new console asks to format it, stop and verify that the drive was properly removed and that you selected extended storage rather than a normal USB-media option.

Physical games during the move
Copying data does not remove the disc requirement. After installation on the new PS5, insert the original PS4 or PS5 disc whenever you start the game. A disc library cannot be converted into a drive-less digital library by transferring files.

Model-specific covers, bases, stands and drives
Physical accessories are the area where a “new PS5” most often breaks compatibility. Identify the CFI model group on the console and match it to the accessory packaging or current instructions.

The CFI number is more useful than a retailer’s description such as “new PS5” or “slim.” Keep the console model and accessory model together when replacing covers, adding a stand or fitting a drive.
Troubleshooting compatibility problems
The game will not start from a disc
- Confirm that the console has a drive and that the disc is the correct PS4 or PS5 version.
- Clean the disc and reinsert it; the disc must remain inserted for license verification.
- If the console is a Digital Edition, use a digital purchase or verify that it is one of the supported CFI-2000 slim or PS5 Pro configurations for the removable drive.
The PS4 game shows an error or missing feature
- Check the game’s PlayStation Store compatibility label and support notes.
- Look for a PS5 update or choose the PS4 version when both versions are installed.
- Expect that features such as Second Screen, tournaments or companion apps may not be available on PS5.
The controller works in menus but not in the game
Determine which game generation you launched. Use DualSense for PS5 software. DUALSHOCK 4 and compatible third-party pads are for supported PS4 software; specialty controllers remain dependent on the title and exact model.

Reconnect the PS4 Camera model CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2 through the Camera adaptor. The PS5 HD Camera cannot provide PS VR tracking. If the game requires motion input, pair the supported Move controllers or use the supported PS VR Aim controller.
The replacement cover or stand does not fit
Stop forcing the part. Recheck the CFI model group and whether the accessory is specified for the original CFI-1000 family, slim CFI-2000 family or PS5 Pro. Covers and the standard base for earlier groups are not interchangeable with PS5 Pro.
