No. An original PlayStation game disc cannot be played directly in a PS4 or PS5. Those games were distributed on CD-based discs, and Sony’s current support guidance lists CD among the formats that PS4 and PS5 consoles do not support for playback. This is a format-based conclusion: Sony’s support page does not separately name every original PS1 game disc.
You can still play some classic PlayStation games on a modern console through a current digital release in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, but that route does not read, authenticate, or convert the disc you own.
What happens if you insert an original PlayStation disc?
A first-generation PlayStation game disc is a CD-ROM. When you insert one into a PS4 or PS5, the console does not treat it as a supported game format. It will not install the game, start it, or turn it into a digital license. The result is the same whether the disc is an original retail copy, a used copy, or a regional PlayStation release.

Sony’s published media guidance says that “PS5 consoles and PS4 consoles don’t support playback of these types of discs” and lists “CD” among the unsupported formats. Because PS1 game discs are CD-based, applying that rule to an original PS1 disc is the technically supported conclusion. Sony has not published a separate sentence on the reviewed page that says “original PlayStation game discs are incompatible,” so it is more accurate to describe the PS1 answer as an inference from the unsupported CD format than as a direct PS1-specific quotation.

PS1 discs on PS4: not supported
PS4 does not provide backward compatibility for original PlayStation CD-ROM game discs. The console’s unsupported-CD guidance covers the physical format used by PS1 software. A PS4 cannot use the disc as an installer or as proof that you own a digital version.
Why the PS4’s disc drive does not help
The presence of an optical drive does not mean that every optical-disc format is supported. Compatibility requires the console software, security system, and game runtime to recognize the disc. In this case, Sony lists CD media as unsupported on PS4, so inserting an original PS1 game does not activate a hidden compatibility mode.
What about a PS1 game that also had a PS4 release?
A later PS4 edition is a separate product. If a game was reissued digitally for PS4, you must obtain or access that supported release through the PlayStation Store or an eligible subscription catalog. The original CD itself does not supply the PS4 license.
PS1 discs on PS5: also not supported
PS5 does not play original PlayStation CD game discs either. Sony’s supported-disc information for PS5 concerns PS4 and PS5 game discs, while its media-format guidance lists CD as unsupported. A PS5 with an optical drive therefore does not gain PS1 compatibility simply because it can read other game discs.

Disc edition versus Digital Edition
The PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive, so it cannot accept any physical game disc. A standard PS5 with a built-in or supported detachable drive can use compatible PS4 and PS5 discs, but the drive does not make unsupported PS1 CDs work.
Can an add-on or replacement drive add PS1 support?
Do not treat a disc-drive upgrade, external USB drive, HDMI adapter, or replacement optical part as a compatibility solution. Sony’s supported-media documentation excludes CD, and the reviewed documentation does not say that an add-on drive adds original PlayStation game support. A drive can change how compatible media is read; it does not create a PS1 emulator, a PS1 license, or an operating-system feature that Sony has not provided.
Do not confuse PS4 compatibility with PS1 compatibility
Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility statement is broad but specific: more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus games available on PS4 are playable on PS5. That figure refers to PS4 games, not games from the original PlayStation generation.
Sony also states that a PS5 can play PS4 and PS5 games in disc or digital formats, subject to the model and the individual title. For a PS4 disc, the disc must remain inserted each time you play. That rule applies to PS4 software running on PS5; it does not extend to a PS1 CD.

How PS4 discs work on a PS5 with a drive
- Use a PS5 model with a compatible disc drive.
- Insert the supported PS4 game disc.
- Allow any required game update to download.
- Leave the disc inserted whenever you launch the game.
PS4 game discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition. None of these steps applies to an original PlayStation disc, because PS1 CDs are outside the supported media formats.
The practical digital alternative: Classics Catalog
If you want to play a particular PS1-era game on PS4 or PS5, search for an official digital release in the current PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. Eligible titles can be downloaded or streamed on supported consoles with the appropriate membership. This is a catalog license, not a way to use your physical disc.
Download route
When a title is available for download under your membership, the console installs the supported digital version from PlayStation’s service. Your original disc is not scanned, copied, or converted. The exact membership tier required is shown on the title’s current store or catalog page.
Streaming route
Streaming avoids a local game installation but depends on your broadband connection and the title’s streaming support. Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed for streaming Classics Catalog games and lists 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming when the game supports that resolution. These are connection requirements, not guarantees of perfect latency or image quality.

Availability can differ
The catalog is not a permanent list of every PS1 game. A title may be available in one country and absent in another, or it may leave the service later. Check the current listing for your account region before subscribing or assuming that a specific disc has a digital equivalent.
How to check whether your game is available digitally
- Identify the exact game title, including subtitle, edition, and region where relevant.
- On your PS4 or PS5, open the PlayStation Store or the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog.
- Search the title rather than relying on a generic “PS1” category.
- Open the game’s product page and confirm that it is offered in your account’s country or region.
- Read whether the page offers download, streaming, or both.
- Check the membership requirement and whether your current plan includes that title.
- Confirm the supported console before starting the download or streaming session.
If the exact title does not appear, the absence may reflect regional rights, catalog rotation, or the fact that Sony has not released that game for the service. Your original CD does not provide a fallback installation method on PS4 or PS5.

Common misconceptions and failed fixes
“The PS5 plays PS4 games, so it should play PS1 games.”
PS5 backward compatibility is a defined compatibility program for PS4 software. It does not mean that every earlier PlayStation format is supported. The more-than-99-percent figure covers the PS4 library, not PS1 discs.
“The console can read DVDs, so it should read a PlayStation CD.”
Optical media types are not interchangeable from a console-support perspective. Sony’s format list explicitly identifies CD as unsupported on PS4 and PS5. A drive’s ability to accept a disc physically is not the same as the system’s ability to run its software.

“A USB optical drive will make it work.”
There is no supported Sony workflow in the reviewed documentation for loading PS1 games through an external optical drive. USB storage can hold supported downloads, but it does not turn an original CD into an authorized PS4 or PS5 game installation.
“A digital listing proves my disc will work.”
A digital listing proves only that a supported release may be available. It does not create disc authentication for your copy. You must use the download or streaming entitlement shown on the current product page.
“The disc is defective because the console does nothing.”
Testing another original PS1 disc will not change the platform limitation. If the console does not recognize the disc, that behavior is consistent with Sony’s unsupported-CD guidance rather than evidence that cleaning or replacing the disc will enable compatibility.

What to choose if you still own the physical game
Choose the catalog version when convenience matters
Use the Classics Catalog when the exact game is listed for your region and you are comfortable with its membership requirement. Downloading is generally the better route when you want to avoid dependence on streaming quality; streaming can be useful when you want to start without a large local installation and have a stable connection.
Use original hardware when the disc itself is important
If you need the original disc, original regional release, or period-authentic behavior, PS4 and PS5 are not the right disc players. A compatible original PlayStation console or another lawful platform that explicitly supports that format is required. This article does not establish compatibility for any particular third-party device, so verify that device’s documentation separately.
Check regional and catalog details before paying
- Confirm the title is listed for your account region.
- Check whether it is included with your current membership or requires a different plan.
- Look for download and streaming availability separately.
- Check whether the title has an announced removal date or other time limitation.
- Verify that the game is supported on your specific PS4 or PS5 model.
Bottom line
Original PlayStation game discs do not work on PS4 or PS5. The conclusion follows from Sony’s statement that CD media is unsupported on both consoles, although Sony’s page does not name PS1 discs individually. PS5 backward compatibility covers PS4 games, not PS1 CDs. To play a classic on a modern console, find the exact title in the current Classics Catalog and use its supported download or streaming option; your physical disc cannot be used as the license or installation source.
