Yes, many original Nintendo Switch controllers work with Nintendo Switch 2, but compatibility is accessory-specific. Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly, yet they cannot attach to Switch 2 or charge from it. The original Switch dock cannot be used, the original AC adapter can charge the console only in handheld mode, and Switch 2 game storage requires microSD Express. Check each model rather than assuming that every Switch accessory carries over.

The compatibility details below reflect Nintendo of America’s official guidance checked on October 13, 2026. Nintendo may revise support as system software and accessories change.

What “compatible” means on Switch 2

Nintendo uses compatibility in several different ways. A controller can pair over Bluetooth but still lack a physical way to connect to the console. An accessory can connect electrically but work only in TV mode or only with a game that supports it. Charging compatibility is another separate question: the device that operates a controller is not always the device that recharges it.

  • Wireless compatibility: the controller can be paired with Switch 2.
  • Physical compatibility: a controller or attachment can slide onto, plug into, or otherwise fit the new hardware.
  • Game compatibility: the game recognizes the controller or peripheral and supports its functions.
  • Power and charging compatibility: the console, dock, cable, or stand can supply the required power.

The original Joy-Con pass the wireless test, but fail the physical-attachment test. The original dock fails the hardware-compatibility test altogether, while some older controllers remain useful with the new dock.

Using original Joy-Con with Switch 2

They work wirelessly, not as side-mounted controls

Original Joy-Con can be paired with Switch 2 as separate wireless controllers. They do not slide onto the sides of the Switch 2 console, so handheld play does not recreate the original console’s attached-controller setup. Plan to use them detached, in a grip, or on a table while the console communicates wirelessly.

How to pair them

  1. Turn on Switch 2 and open the controller menu from the HOME Menu.
  2. Choose the option to change or add controllers, then select the pairing command shown on screen.
  3. Press and hold the SYNC button on the original Joy-Con until the player lights begin moving.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompt to assign the Joy-Con to a player. Repeat for the second Joy-Con if you want a two-controller pair.

The exact menu wording can change with system software, but the pairing principle is the same: use the controller settings rather than trying to attach the Joy-Con physically.

Charging original Joy-Con

Switch 2 cannot charge original Joy-Con through a side rail because the controllers cannot attach to it. Nintendo says charging requires a Nintendo Switch console or a compatible Joy-Con charging grip or two-way charging stand. A charging accessory designed for the original Joy-Con generation should not be confused with hardware made for Joy-Con 2.

If a Joy-Con appears in the controller list but its battery never increases, pairing is not the problem. Move it to a compatible charging method, allow it to charge, and then reconnect it wirelessly to Switch 2.

Pro and classic wireless controllers

Switch Pro Controller

The original Switch Pro Controller remains a practical Switch 2 controller. Pair it wirelessly through the controller settings, then connect its USB cable to a USB port on the Switch 2 dock when it needs power. This charging arrangement does not require the old dock.

NES, SNES, Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis controllers

Nintendo lists its retro controllers as compatible for games that support them. Their usefulness is therefore both controller-specific and software-specific: pairing alone does not guarantee that every Switch 2 title will recognize every button layout.

The NES controller needs a Switch console or compatible charging stand for charging. Nintendo lists USB charging through the Switch 2 dock for SNES, Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis controllers. Keep the controller’s cable and charging method in mind when deciding whether an apparently working controller is ready for a long session.

GameCube Controller Adapter

The GameCube Controller Adapter is supported in TV mode. Connect it to a USB port on the Switch 2 dock, then use a game that supports GameCube input. It is a dock-side connection; it is not a method for connecting GameCube controllers directly to the handheld console.

Why the original dock and HDMI cable cannot be reused

Original dock

Nintendo’s official statement is unambiguous: “The Nintendo Switch dock is not compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” Use the Switch 2 dock for charging, USB accessories and TV mode. Do not treat the original dock as a spare USB hub or as an alternative way to display Switch 2 video.

Original AC adapter

The original Switch AC adapter has limited use. It can charge Switch 2 when connected directly to the console, but it cannot provide TV mode. If you connect that adapter to the old dock or expect it to run a TV setup, the required dock power and video functions will not be available.

HDMI cable

Nintendo’s compatibility list marks the HDMI cable that came with the original Switch as incompatible and recommends the cable included with Switch 2. For a TV setup, use the new dock and the new system’s supplied HDMI cable rather than troubleshooting an old cable first.

Storage: the microSD generation boundary

Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards for game storage. A conventional microSD card from the original Switch does not become a general-purpose Switch 2 game card by moving it to the new console.

Nintendo identifies one limited use for a conventional card: Switch 2 can view screenshots and videos captured on an original Switch. That is a media-access function, not permission to install or run Switch 2 games from the card. Buy storage labeled microSD Express when you need expandable Switch 2 game capacity, and verify the card’s specification rather than relying on its physical size or the fact that it worked in the older console.

Original attachments and game-specific accessories

Accessories that do not fit Joy-Con 2

Nintendo says the original Joy-Con grip, wrist strap, wheel, charging grip, battery pack and charging stand cannot be used with Joy-Con 2. The reason is generational fit and interface design: these accessories were made around the dimensions and rails of the original Joy-Con.

This does not make every one of those accessories useless. An original grip or strap can still be part of an original-Joy-Con setup when those controllers are paired wirelessly with Switch 2, provided the game and play position make sense. The limitation is that the accessory does not convert original hardware into Joy-Con 2 hardware and does not attach to the Switch 2 console.

Ring-Con and Leg Strap exceptions

Nintendo identifies two continuing game-specific uses for original Joy-Con. Ring-Con remains associated with Ring Fit Adventure, and the Leg Strap remains associated with Nintendo Switch Sports, when original Joy-Con are paired wirelessly. Neither accessory is compatible with Joy-Con 2. Before starting either game, confirm that the original Joy-Con are charged and assigned to the correct player.

A reliable setup sequence for reused accessories

  1. Identify the generation. Separate original Joy-Con and their accessories from Joy-Con 2 equipment. Similar names do not guarantee interchangeable parts.
  2. Check the connection type. Decide whether the item pairs wirelessly, plugs into the Switch 2 dock, or depends on a physical rail that Switch 2 does not provide.
  3. Confirm the game requirement. Retro controllers, Ring-Con, Leg Strap and GameCube equipment need a compatible game or mode.
  4. Use the correct power source. Charge original Joy-Con with a Switch console or supported charging accessory; charge dock-supported controllers through the Switch 2 dock where Nintendo specifies USB charging.
  5. Use Switch 2 display hardware. For TV play, install the Switch 2 dock and supplied HDMI cable. Do not substitute the original dock or expect the old AC adapter to enable TV mode.
  6. Test before buying replacements. Pair the controller, open the target game and test every required button or motion function. A successful pairing screen is not a complete compatibility test.

Troubleshooting common failures

The original Joy-Con will not appear in the controller menu

  • Press the SYNC button and repeat the pairing process from the controller settings.
  • Charge the Joy-Con with a compatible method; a depleted battery can look like a pairing failure.
  • Move away from other wireless devices and try again with the Joy-Con close to Switch 2.
  • Check that you are using original Joy-Con, not assuming that a Joy-Con 2 attachment or rail accessory will solve the problem.

The controller pairs but the game does nothing

Check whether the title supports that controller. Nintendo’s “compatible” label for NES, SNES, Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis controllers is explicitly limited to compatible games. Reassign the controller to the intended player and inspect the game’s controller or input settings.

Switch 2 charges but will not display on a television

An original AC adapter can charge the console directly without supporting TV mode. Replace the old dock with the Switch 2 dock and use the HDMI cable supplied with Switch 2. Also verify that the console is seated in the new dock and that the television is set to the dock’s HDMI input.

An old microSD card is rejected for game storage

That behavior is expected for a conventional microSD card. Reserve it for viewing original-Switch screenshots and videos, and use a microSD Express card for Switch 2 game storage.

What to verify before buying a replacement

  • Controller generation: original Joy-Con, Joy-Con 2 or another named controller model.
  • Connection method: wireless pairing, USB through the Switch 2 dock, or physical attachment.
  • Charging route: console, dock, charging grip or two-way stand.
  • Play mode: handheld, tabletop or TV mode.
  • Game support: especially for retro controllers, Ring-Con, Leg Strap and GameCube input.
  • Storage standard: microSD Express for Switch 2 game data.

Nintendo’s named-accessory list does not establish that third-party accessories work as a category. For any third-party dock, controller, cable, charging product or storage card, check the exact model’s compatibility statement and technical requirements before purchasing.

How future updates affect this advice

Compatibility lists can change when Nintendo updates system software or adds support for accessories and games. The guidance here reflects the official Nintendo of America list available on October 13, 2026. Recheck Nintendo’s current compatibility page for a specific model, especially if an accessory is newly released, third-party, or dependent on a particular game.
