Yes—businesses can use Mistral Large 4 through Mistral’s public-preview API under the applicable commercial terms. That does not settle whether you may download or self-host the model: as of October 9, 2026, Mistral had not released the weights or their license. Before using the API, check the preview model’s data-training terms and your deployment’s authorization requirements.
Can I use Mistral Large 4 commercially?
Mistral’s Commercial Terms of Service cover commercial customers’ use of its products. The terms, effective September 25, 2026, apply when a customer agrees through signup or an Order Form, or uses a product on the customer’s behalf. They grant a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable and generally non-sublicensable license to access and use the products, subject to the agreement and applicable additional terms. Read Mistral’s Commercial Terms of Service.
Mistral Large 4 was listed as a public-preview model in documentation dated October 6, 2026. Its API can therefore be considered for commercial use under those terms, but preview status makes the data provisions especially important. The commercial API license is not a license to download the model weights.

Can I self-host Mistral Large 4?
Not on the basis of the “open-weight” label or the current API terms. The terms say that use on customer infrastructure must be expressly authorized by Mistral in an Order Form. As of October 9, 2026, the model weights were still forthcoming: Mistral’s October 6 announcement said, “We will release the weights by the end of this month,” while its changelog described them as coming soon. That is an announced target, not confirmation of release.

Until the weights and their accompanying license are actually published, the rights to download, modify, redistribute, or commercially self-host them are unsettled. Check the release package and license before planning any of those activities.
Which deployment route are you using?
Mistral’s terms distinguish among its own infrastructure, partner infrastructure, and customer infrastructure. The route determines which documents and permissions to verify.
| Route | What to check |
|---|---|
| Mistral infrastructure | Commercial terms, applicable product terms, and the order or signup terms for the service. |
| Partner infrastructure | The partner’s ordering documentation and the terms for the deployment served by that partner. |
| Customer infrastructure | Express authorization in an Order Form. The current commercial terms do not, by themselves, grant customer-infrastructure rights. |
Mistral’s announcement describes planned availability in multiple regions, including a European deployment operated end-to-end by Mistral under European law. Those vendor statements do not establish the region, residency commitment, or self-hosting option available to a particular customer. Confirm the service and region-specific commitments in the applicable order and service documentation. See Mistral’s launch announcement.
Can Mistral use my prompts to train its models?
Mistral’s commercial terms say inputs and outputs from preview models may be used to train its models. The opt-out settings selected for other products—including zero data retention—do not apply to Labs or Preview Models. Treat this as a material data-governance issue before sending confidential, personal, or regulated information to the Large 4 preview API. Review the applicable terms and your organization’s data rules; do not assume another product’s opt-out carries over.

What license is Mistral Large 4 under?
There are two separate licensing questions:
- Hosted API: The commercial terms grant a limited right to access and use Mistral’s product, subject to restrictions and any additional product terms.
- Model weights: No weight license was available in the official sources reviewed as of October 9, 2026, because the weights had not yet been published. The API terms do not determine the future weight license.
Mistral’s model governance record identifies Large 4 as an active general-purpose AI model released October 6, 2026. That lifecycle record is not a grant of download or self-hosting rights. View the model record.
Who owns customer data and API output?
Mistral’s Commercial Terms state: “To the extent permitted by applicable law, Customer (i) retains all ownership rights in Customer Data and (ii) owns all Output.” The terms also assign to the customer any rights Mistral may have in output. The legal qualification matters, and ownership language does not remove the customer’s duty to have permission to submit data or to assess generated output before use.

What other obligations and restrictions apply?
The commercial terms require customers to comply with applicable law, the usage policy, and third-party rights. They also restrict certain conduct, including unlawful or rights-infringing use, reverse engineering or attempts to discover underlying components, and certain third-party integrations or access without authorization. Customers remain responsible for checking the accuracy and appropriateness of output for their use case.
These are contract-level summaries, not a substitute for checking the complete terms and usage policy against a particular project. Mistral also publishes Additional Product Terms; determine whether any terms for the selected product or route apply.

Mistral’s documentation dated October 6, 2026 lists a 1-million-token context window. The same snapshot displayed API prices of $0.68 per million input tokens, $0.07 per million cached input tokens, and $2.09 per million output tokens during the displayed sale period. It also showed struck-through pre-sale rates of $1.36, $0.14, and $4.18, respectively. These are dated, volatile listings; check the live pricing page before budgeting. The changelog described a 50% launch discount for two weeks, which should not be treated as an ongoing offer. Check the Mistral Large 4 documentation and the changelog.
Quick Recap
What to verify before adopting it
- Choose the deployment route. Identify whether use is through Mistral, a partner, or customer infrastructure, then confirm the corresponding order documents and authorization.
- Review preview data handling. Decide whether the preview-model training provision is compatible with the data you plan to send; do not rely on opt-outs for other products.
- Confirm legal permissions and review duties. Check rights to submitted data, usage-policy compliance, restrictions on integrations and reverse engineering, and how you will validate outputs.
- For self-hosting plans, wait for the actual release terms. Verify the published weight license and any accompanying conditions rather than extrapolating from the API contract or “open-weight” description.
- Validate geography and cost for your use. Confirm region and residency commitments in your specific service documents, and recheck token prices because the cited figures are a dated sale-period snapshot.
