It depends on the cooking mode and your exact appliance. Do not use an ordinary metal pan in microwave-only mode. A metal pan may be allowed in a dedicated air-fry, convection, or grill mode, but combo modes and foil have model-specific rules. Check your appliance manual’s cookware chart before using any metal accessory.

Why the selected mode matters

A microwave air fryer combo can use different heating methods. Microwave-only mode uses microwave energy; air-fry, convection, and grill modes use other heating elements. A setting that combines microwave energy with convection or grilling may still have microwave restrictions.

Metal can block microwaves from reaching food and may cause arcing—visible sparks inside the appliance. That is why cookware allowed in convection-only mode is not automatically allowed in microwave-plus-convection mode. The appliance’s label or the word “combo” alone does not establish that a pan is safe.

What to use in each mode

Mode Metal pans or accessories Foil What to check
Microwave only Do not use ordinary metal cookware unless the exact manual explicitly permits a particular accessory. Do not assume foil is allowed; use it only if the manual gives specific instructions. Use a microwave-safe dish. Panasonic’s guidance for its listed appliances specifies microwaveable dishes and no metal in microwave mode.
Air fry Some models allow or recommend metal pans or a supplied basket. GE recommends metal pans for its Air Fry feature; KitchenAid directs users of its Air Fry Mode to the included basket. Permission and placement are model-specific. Check the exact model’s directions for the required basket, tray, and pan materials.
Convection or grill Metal may be permitted, but only as specified for the appliance. Panasonic’s guidance allows a heatproof metal tin on its enamel tray for convection; Panasonic Brazil’s NN-CD89NBRUN guidance permits metal pans and tins only in grill and convection functions. Some models permit limited shielding, with strict placement instructions. Confirm the named mode and accessory in the manual; do not transfer another model’s permission to yours.
Combination mode Rules vary. A metal accessory permitted in a standalone convection or grill mode may be prohibited when microwave energy is also used. Use only if the manual explicitly permits it for that combination setting. Check the instructions for the precise combination mode, not just the individual functions.

How to check before cooking

  1. Identify the exact mode. Determine whether the selected setting is microwave-only, air fry, convection, grill, or a combination. If the label is unclear, consult the appliance manual.
  2. Find the cookware or accessory chart. Look up the exact model and setting. Check whether it names your pan, rack, tray, basket, or foil, and whether it requires a particular position or spacing.
  3. Follow the model-specific instructions. Use only the supplied accessory or cookware type the manual permits for that mode. Do not assume a rule for one manufacturer or model applies to another.
  4. Choose a microwave-safe dish for microwave-only cooking. Confirm that any glass or ceramic dish is rated for the intended use and temperature; suitability for microwave cooking does not by itself establish suitability for air frying, convection, or grilling.
  5. Stop if sparks appear. Turn the appliance off and follow its instructions. Do not continue cooking to see whether the sparking stops.

Foil needs especially careful handling

Foil is not a blanket exception to the microwave-metal rule. GE describes small, close-fitting foil pieces for shielding in convection cooking, warns against loose foil “flags,” and says not to cover food completely. That is GE’s guidance for the appliances covered by its support page, not permission for every microwave combo.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For the Panasonic Brazil NN-CD89NBRUN, the model-specific instructions allow only small foil strips in grill and convection to shield delicate parts of meat or poultry. They say to keep foil away from the cavity walls and avoid large amounts to reduce sparking risk. Use foil only when your own manual gives comparable, explicit directions.

Why manufacturer instructions can differ

Cookware permissions depend on the appliance’s design and the particular heating mode. For example, Panasonic North America says its enamel tray is for Air Fry, Broil, Convection, and Combo mode, but not microwave mode alone. Its page gives different accessory directions for two combo modes and says no metal for those modes. KitchenAid says metal baking dishes belong only on the convection setting in its convection-microwave guidance, while its Air Fry Mode directions specify the included air-fry basket. These examples are not interchangeable rules; they show why the exact model manual matters.

Likewise, GE’s guidance that metal pans are recommended for its Air Fry feature applies to the GE feature and models described on its support page. The page directs owners to their model’s manual. A general claim such as “metal is safe on air fry” is too broad.

If you do not have the manual

  • Look for the model number on the appliance label and use it to find the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Until you can verify the cookware chart, avoid metal in microwave-only and combination modes.
  • For microwave-only cooking, use a dish explicitly rated microwave-safe. For other modes, wait to confirm that the dish can tolerate the appliance’s heat and is permitted by its instructions.
  • If you cannot establish whether a pan, rack, or foil is permitted, do not use it in that mode.
