Yes. You can play a Humblewood species in a campaign set anywhere else, provided the Dungeon Master approves the third-party option. Your group can import only the species mechanics, bring the species’ original culture and lore with it, or adapt both to the campaign world. The important checks are the exact wording of the species traits, whether the table uses 2014 or 2024 rules, and whether features such as flight, gliding, movement, size, or ability-score rules affect the campaign’s balance.

What Humblewood species are

Humblewood is a third-party Dungeons & Dragons 5e campaign setting published by Hit Point Press. Its official setting page describes ten animal-based player options and groups them into two families: birdfolk and humblefolk. The birdfolk are Corvum, Gallus, Luma, Raptor, and Strig; the humblefolk are Cervan, Hedge, Jerbeen, Mapach, and Vulpin. The publisher’s FAQ calls Humblewood “an unofficial D&D campaign setting created with the open gaming license.” Read the setting overview and FAQ at Humblewood’s official campaign-setting page.

The book uses the older 5e term race for these options. Current D&D language generally uses species, so a question about a “Humblewood race” and one about a “Humblewood species” normally refers to the same character option. D&D Beyond’s overview explains that terminology while describing the options in the book: Exploring the Player Options of the Humblewood Campaign Setting Guide.

You do not need to import the entire setting. The original rules and lore are collected in the Humblewood Campaign Setting book, which is the most direct reference when you need the complete wording of a trait or the setting context behind it.

Who decides whether you can use one?

In a home campaign, the DM controls the allowed source list. “Official” does not mean “automatically permitted”: Humblewood is third-party material, and a DM can limit character options to particular books, ban outside material, or approve an option only after reviewing it.

Ask before you design a character around the option. Send the DM the exact species name, the edition or printing you are using, and a link or page reference for every trait. This avoids a common problem in which a player creates a concept first and discovers at session zero that the campaign does not allow that source.

Approval can be narrow. A DM might allow a species’ ability scores, movement, and proficiencies but decline its original setting factions. Another DM might allow the full option but ask for a small change to a feature that bypasses an exploration challenge. Treat that as a campaign-specific ruling rather than a judgment about the species as a whole.

Choose what you are importing

Discuss the mechanical option and its fiction separately. The following approaches are all workable, but they create different preparation requirements.

Approach What comes into the campaign Best when Questions to settle
Mechanics only The species’ traits, size, movement, proficiencies, and other rules text. The character receives a new origin in the DM’s world. The campaign has its own cultures and history, or the group wants the simplest integration. What does the character’s community look like here? Which local people use the same name?
Mechanics plus adapted lore The rules remain, while names, customs, religion, geography, and political relationships are rewritten for the campaign. The player wants a strong identity without adding a second setting’s canon. Which parts of the original culture are retained, and who has authority to define the replacement?
Mechanics plus original Humblewood lore The species and its established background enter the new campaign largely intact. The DM is happy to connect the worlds or the campaign already uses multiple settings. Where is Humblewood located, how did the character leave it, and do its organizations exist in this world?

Mechanics-only import is not a lesser choice. It lets a DM keep the campaign’s cosmology and history coherent while still giving a player access to an unusual character concept.

Check the edition before checking the character sheet

Humblewood options were written for 5e. A campaign using the 2014 rules can usually evaluate them against the wording in the setting book, but a table using the 2024 rules should not assume that every older third-party trait has already been converted.

D&D Beyond support says that content labeled 5e and 5.5e can be used together for campaigns and character creation on that platform: Can I use 5e and 5.5e content together on D&D Beyond? That is platform-level compatibility guidance, not a statement that each Humblewood species has an official 2024 rewrite. The DM still needs to read the actual option and decide how it interacts with the table’s rules.

Campaign rules What to do with a Humblewood option
2014 5e Use the wording in the Humblewood source you own, then apply the campaign’s normal rules for ability scores, backgrounds, and advancement.
2024 rules Compare every trait with the 2024 terminology and character-creation process. Agree in advance on any replacement wording; do not label the result an official conversion unless the publisher provides one.
Mixed 2014/2024 table Record which rules version governs the species, background, feats, and class. Resolve conflicts at session zero so the same trait is not interpreted differently by different players.
D&D Beyond character builder Use the platform’s 5e/5.5e compatibility as a convenience, then verify the printed trait text and the DM’s house ruling. A builder entry does not override the campaign’s source restrictions.

A step-by-step approval process

  1. Ask the DM with the complete option. State the species, source book or digital listing, rules edition, and the character’s intended role. Do not provide only a name; similarly named options can have different mechanics.
  2. Separate rules from story. Tell the DM whether you want mechanics only, adapted lore, or the original Humblewood background. This lets the DM approve one layer without accidentally approving the other.
  3. Copy the current trait wording. Use the version your group actually owns or has licensed. Note page numbers or a digital source so the table can resolve questions during play.
  4. Review traits individually. Mark movement modes, flight or glide language, size, ability-score instructions, proficiencies, senses, resistances, innate magic, and any action or reaction. Check how each item works under the campaign’s edition.
  5. Map the species into the setting. Decide where the character was born, how other people recognize the species, and whether its community is common, rare, hidden, or newly arrived. Replace Humblewood place names if the original geography is not entering the game.
  6. Write down exceptions. If the DM changes a range, timing, movement mode, or prerequisite, record the exact replacement sentence on the character sheet or campaign notes. A written ruling prevents later arguments and makes a replacement easy to review.
  7. Revisit the choice after play. If a trait creates an unexpected problem, discuss that specific interaction. A targeted adjustment is preferable to weakening every member of the species.

Traits that deserve the closest review

Movement, flight, and gliding

Any nonstandard movement can alter more than combat. It can change scouting, chases, vertical dungeon design, wilderness travel, falling hazards, and the value of obstacles. Ask whether the text grants true flight, a glide, a conditional movement mode, or something usable only in a particular situation. Check its speed, activation, duration, equipment limitations, and interaction with armor or encumbrance exactly as written.

If the campaign is built around ground-level exploration, do not apply a blanket ban automatically. Instead, discuss a concrete rule: perhaps the feature works as printed, requires suitable space, or is limited by a setting-specific condition. The DM should make the same ruling whenever the same feature appears, regardless of who is playing it.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Size and physical access

Size affects squeezing, mounts, doors, grapples, furniture, and the spaces a character can occupy. A species that is smaller or larger than the campaign’s common player characters may need practical answers that the core rules do not spell out for every scene. Decide how the setting’s equipment, transport, and settlements accommodate that body size.

Ability-score language

Older 5e material may present ability-score increases in wording that does not match a 2024 character-creation method. Determine whether the campaign uses the source’s printed increases, the table’s normal 2024 origin rules, or a documented replacement. Do not silently combine two systems and give the character more increases than other players receive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Proficiencies, senses, and innate magic

These traits can overlap with a class, background, feat, or house rule. Check whether a proficiency duplicates one the character already has and how the campaign handles duplicate grants. For innate spells or other magical effects, confirm the relevant ability, casting timing, spell list, frequency, and whether the campaign’s 2024 rules alter the way the effect is selected or used.

Adapting the lore without losing the character

Start with the character’s personal facts rather than trying to transplant an entire setting. Keep the traits that matter to the player—family expectations, a community skill, a migration story, a faith, or a reason to adventure—and rewrite the institutions around them.

  • Replace geography: A village, forest, or city from Humblewood can become a district, island, frontier settlement, or neighboring plane in the current campaign.
  • Replace political relationships: Keep the character’s experience of prejudice, alliance, or trade only if it fits the new setting; do not import an entire conflict without the DM’s consent.
  • Translate terminology: A Humblewood organization can become a local guild, clan, temple, or informal network with a new name and purpose.
  • Keep cultural specificity: Avoid reducing the species to an animal joke. Give it ordinary families, professions, disagreements, and individual motives just as other player characters have.
  • Define what outsiders know: In a familiar species, the character may face stereotypes; in a rare one, strangers may ask questions or misunderstand customs. Decide how much attention the player actually wants at the table.

Write a short paragraph for the character sheet explaining the adaptation. It should answer where the character is from, what community they belong to now, and why they are adventuring. That is usually enough for the DM to connect the concept to the campaign without importing pages of setting history.

Balance and table-tone safeguards

Balance is not only a question of whether a species is numerically stronger. A feature can be fair in a typical campaign and disruptive in one built around locked rooms, vertical hazards, stealth, or social anonymity. Before play, identify encounters or scenes where the option will matter most.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Tell the DM when the character’s movement could bypass a planned obstacle.
  • Let the DM decide whether a location has enough room, visibility, and safety for a movement feature to function.
  • Use the same interpretation for enemies and nonplayer characters with equivalent abilities.
  • Do not hide a disputed trait until it becomes decisive; resolve it during character creation.
  • If a change is needed, alter one defined parameter and test it for a few sessions rather than rewriting the whole species.

Also agree on tone. A campaign modeled on historical realism, a lighthearted animal adventure, and a grim horror game may all permit the same species while portraying it differently. Consent about jokes, stereotypes, accents, and how much attention the character’s appearance receives is part of the approval conversation.

Using digital listings and printed sources

The D&D Beyond Marketplace lists a digital Humblewood Campaign Setting entry at Humblewood Campaign Setting (Digital). Availability, licensing, and character-builder behavior can change, so treat the listing as a source location rather than proof that a DM has approved the material. The publisher’s product page remains the direct reference for the original book and its setting context.

Keep a local record of the source title, edition label, page number, and any house ruling. If the group changes from 2014 to 2024 rules mid-campaign, revisit that record instead of assuming the character sheet has updated every trait correctly.

Common problems and practical fixes

Problem Why it happens Fix
The DM says “no Humblewood,” but the player thought only the setting was banned. Source-list restrictions often apply to the book’s player options as well as its lore. Ask whether a specific option can be reviewed separately; accept the decision if the source remains outside the campaign.
The character sheet shows a trait that the printed book does not. A digital builder, update, or homebrew entry may use different wording. Compare the sheet with the group’s agreed source and record the approved text in campaign notes.
A 2024 character has conflicting ability-score rules. Older species text and newer origin rules are being combined without a ruling. Choose one method for all characters in the campaign and document it before play.
A movement feature bypasses too many encounters. The feature interacts with the campaign’s terrain more strongly than expected. Discuss the exact interaction and adjust that feature or encounter design, rather than imposing an unrelated penalty.
The lore overwhelms the campaign’s existing setting. Imported factions and geography were added without deciding what they replace. Keep the species mechanics and personal background, then convert only the lore elements that serve the current world.

A final decision checklist

  • The DM has approved the specific Humblewood species and source.
  • The group has identified whether the campaign uses 2014, 2024, or mixed rules.
  • The table has chosen mechanics-only, adapted-lore, or original-lore use.
  • Movement, flight or glide, size, ability scores, proficiencies, senses, and magic have been checked individually.
  • Any conversion or house ruling is written in one place.
  • The character’s origin fits the campaign’s geography, tone, and social assumptions.
  • The group knows how to revisit a feature if actual play reveals a problem.
