Yes—some VR headsets use HDMI. HTC’s original VIVE is one example, but HDMI is only one part of its connection setup: it also uses a link box, USB, and power. Other headsets, including Valve Index and PS VR2 connected to a PC, require a different video connection. Check the exact headset and host-device requirements before choosing a cable or adapter.
How HDMI fits into a VR headset setup
There is no universal connector for VR. A headset may connect directly to a computer, through a link box or processor unit, or through a PC adapter. HDMI might carry video in one model’s setup while another requires DisplayPort. USB, power, a console, or required software may also be part of the connection.
For the original HTC VIVE, HTC lists HDMI among the headset connections and HDMI 1.4 among supported PC video outputs in its VIVE specifications and user guide. The computer connects to the VIVE’s link box; the headset then connects to that box with its HDMI, USB, and power cables. HDMI is therefore part of a multi-cable chain, not the headset’s only connection.
Original HTC VIVE: the documented HDMI connection
HTC’s connection instructions describe this sequence:

The link-box documentation also identifies a Mini DisplayPort option. HTC says the Mini DisplayPort cable is not included and is intended for a computer without a spare HDMI port or without HDMI support. This describes the original VIVE documentation; do not assume the same connection chain applies to every VIVE model or generation.
Headsets that do not accept HDMI for PC video
Valve Index
Valve’s Index system requirements say the headset does not support HDMI and will not work with DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters. If your computer has only HDMI output, do not assume an adapter will make it compatible.

PS VR2 connected to a PC
For PS VR2 on PC, Sony specifies a separately sold DisplayPort 1.4 cable between the PC adapter and computer in its PC setup guidance. Sony’s PS VR2 PC troubleshooting guidance says HDMI-to-DisplayPort conversion adapters are not supported.

The original PS VR uses a processor unit in its audio and video path, as described in Sony’s PlayStation VR troubleshooting guidance. That page includes HDMI in processor-unit troubleshooting and says PS VR does not support HDMI extensions. This is a console setup with a processor unit—not evidence that PC VR headsets generally connect directly by HDMI.

- HDMI-to-USB-C: This HUB features the capability to convert HDMI video output ports into USB-C video output ports, designed for the following use cases: Connecting Switch OLED/Switch 2 to USB-C AR glasses or USB-C portable displays. Connecting PS4/PS5 to USB-C AR glasses or USB-C portable displays. Connecting Xbox to USB-C AR glasses or USB-C portable displays. Connecting TV boxes to USB-C AR glasses or USB-C portable displays. Connecting Laptop (with HDMI port) to USB-C AR glasses or USB-C portable displays. The hub's USB-C video output port supports to RayNeo/VITURE/Xreal/Rokid AR Glasses, as well as portable displays.
- DP Protocol Video Output: Xreal AR glasses connect correct to the HUB but there is no sound or not video on glasses, you need to switch the Xreal AR glasses to DP Mode(𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐀𝐥𝐭 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞) according to the AR glasses manual. Except for Xreal AR glasses, which require switching to glasses mode, AR glasses from other brands do not require this. This hub is not compatible with the Meta Quest/PICO/HTC Vive VR-Headsets and Epson AR Glasss.
- Compatible with USB-C Portable Monitors: The HUB's power cable can only supply power to AR glasses and displays, with a maximum power output of 10W (5V 2A). It cannot power source devices, so source devices require separate charging. When using a USB-C portable display, you must first connect an external power source to the display before connecting it to the hub. Otherwise, the display may operate intermittently or experience screen blackouts. Please note the power consumption of the monitor.
- Note the Source Device Interface: This HUB is used for Switch, PS4/5, XBox, TV Box, and other video output devices need to make sure your device has HDMI video output port, if there is no HDMI video output port but has USB C video output port, we recommend using a USB-C to USB-C hub. Of course, we also sell USB-C to USB-C hub, please search Amazon ASIN B0G59TSXFP. However, do not use these two HUBs together at the same time. The hub is not compatible with the DHCP feature on PS4/PS5, laptops, or other HDMI source devices. Please disable the DHCP feature on your device before connecting it to the hub; otherwise, the hub may not function properly.
- Note the HUB's Interfaces Connection is Stable: You can connect a Portable Charger to the HUB to keep it working properly, thereby solving the power supply issue for the HUB during travel. If a display malfunction occurs, please unplug and replug the cables to ensure each connection is secure and free from looseness. Or replace the 4K HDMI cable and power cable. If you need to use the display's touchscreen functionality, you can check out another hub by searching for Amazon ASIN B0GGR7TCYT.
How to check whether your setup will work
- Identify the exact headset and generation. Similar product names do not guarantee the same ports or setup.
- Check the host-device video output. Look for the output the manufacturer requires, such as HDMI or DisplayPort, and confirm that it is available on the graphics card or specified adapter.
- Trace the full connection chain. Determine whether the headset connects to the computer directly or through a link box, processor unit, or PC adapter.
- Verify every other required connection. Video may not be enough; USB, power, a console connection, or software may also be required.
- Confirm adapter support in the model’s own documentation. Plug shape alone does not establish that a signal conversion will work. Valve and Sony explicitly rule out the adapter conversions described above for their cited setups.
Use the manufacturer’s current requirements and setup instructions for the exact headset and computer or console. A Mini DisplayPort option documented for the original VIVE, for example, is not a general workaround for other headsets.
