Yes. You can use an HDMI monitor and a DisplayPort monitor at the same time when your computer’s graphics hardware supports both connections, the number of displays, and the modes you want. Connect each monitor to a compatible output, then choose an extended or duplicated desktop. If the computer and monitor have different ports, use an adapter made for the signal direction and verify that it supports the desired resolution and refresh rate.
What to check before connecting both monitors
Start with the computer’s graphics outputs, not just the ports on the monitors. Confirm that the outputs can be used concurrently and that the graphics hardware supports your total display count. Some computers have ports connected to different graphics systems, and available combinations vary by model. Intel documents mixed connector combinations for supported Intel graphics configurations, but that does not guarantee the same arrangement on every computer (Intel’s supported configurations).
Then check the specifications for the exact computer, motherboard, or graphics card against each monitor’s resolution and refresh-rate requirements. A connector’s shape does not establish what the complete system can deliver: graphics hardware, port implementation, cable, adapter, display, and shared bandwidth can all affect resolution, refresh rate, color depth, HDR, and audio.
How to connect an HDMI monitor and a DisplayPort monitor
- Identify the computer’s available outputs. Find the HDMI and DisplayPort connectors on the graphics card or computer, and check the product specifications for simultaneous display support.
- Connect matching ports directly when possible. Use an HDMI cable from an HDMI output to the HDMI monitor, and a DisplayPort cable from a DisplayPort output to the DisplayPort monitor. Direct connections avoid an unnecessary conversion.
- Use an adapter only if the ports do not match. For example, a DisplayPort output on the computer and an HDMI input on the monitor require a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter or cable designed for that direction. A cable intended to convert HDMI output to DisplayPort input may not work in reverse. VESA explains that a Dual-Mode DisplayPort source can provide HDMI signaling through an appropriate adapter, while the supported HDMI mode depends on the source and adapter (VESA: Why DisplayPort; VESA’s Dual-Mode announcement).
- Select the display arrangement in your operating system or graphics settings. Choose an extended desktop for separate work areas or duplicate/mirror mode to show the same content on both screens.
Choose extended desktop or duplicated display
Extended desktop
Extended mode gives each monitor its own desktop area, so you can move windows between screens. AMD describes extended displays as having their own desktop areas, including their own resolution and refresh rate (AMD’s display configuration guide).

Duplicated display
Duplicated mode shows the same desktop on both monitors. Because both screens must display the same content, the system may need to use a display mode supported by both. If the image is blank, cropped, or limited to a lower mode, check the selected resolution and refresh rate as well as the capabilities of each display.
When an adapter, USB-C port, or MST hub is involved
DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters
Match the adapter to the direction of the video signal: from the computer’s output to the monitor’s input. Do not assume that a product labeled for one direction works in reverse. Check that the source supports the adapter type and that the adapter supports your target resolution and refresh rate. VESA’s 2013 Dual-Mode announcement discusses HDMI 1.4 examples; those examples are not a universal limit for today’s adapters.

USB-C video output
A USB-C connector alone does not establish that a computer can send video through it. Check the specifications for that particular port to confirm support for DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt before choosing a cable, adapter, or dock.
DisplayPort MST
Multi-Stream Transport (MST) can carry multiple display streams through a compatible DisplayPort hub or a supported daisy-chain. It is a conditional option when one DisplayPort connection must feed multiple monitors: the graphics system, hub, and display arrangement must all support MST. Intel identifies MST as a DisplayPort 1.2-and-newer feature and advises checking system support (Intel’s MST reference guide). NVIDIA’s setup guidance likewise directs users to connect displays to suitable graphics-card connectors and configure them in the graphics control panel (NVIDIA: To use more than one display).

Why supported resolution and refresh rate vary
The limit is determined by the full signal path and the computer’s graphics hardware, not simply by whether a socket is HDMI or DisplayPort. Check the specifications for the exact GPU or computer, the adapter if used, and each monitor. For example, Intel lists UHD Graphics 750 as supporting up to three displays, with HDMI up to 4096×2160 at 60 Hz and DisplayPort up to 5120×3200 at 60 Hz. These are specifications for that graphics product, not general limits for all computers (Intel UHD Graphics 750 support).
Intel’s guidance on three-display configurations also describes supported combinations of DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, VGA, embedded DisplayPort, and Thunderbolt for particular Intel graphics setups. Treat those combinations as model-dependent support rather than a promise that any three ports on any computer work together (Intel’s supported configurations for three displays).

If one of the monitors is not detected
- Make sure the monitor is powered on and set to the input you connected.
- Check that the cable is firmly seated at both ends; if possible, test with a known-good cable.
- Confirm the computer’s graphics hardware supports the two displays at the selected modes and that the outputs can operate concurrently.
- For an adapter, verify signal direction, source compatibility, and support for the requested display mode.
- Open the operating system’s display settings or graphics control panel, detect or select the connected screen, and choose extend or duplicate. NVIDIA’s instructions specifically call for checking that displays are connected and turned on before configuring them.
- If you are using a USB-C dock or DisplayPort MST hub, check that the port, dock or hub, and display chain support video output and the required display configuration.
