Usually, yes—but “works” can mean game audio only or both audio and microphone chat. Wired gaming earbuds with a compatible 3.5 mm headset plug are the simplest option for PS5 and Xbox controllers. PCs can use 3.5 mm, USB, or supported Bluetooth profiles after you select the correct input and output devices. Nintendo Switch is more conditional: its 3.5 mm port can provide listening audio, while microphone and voice-chat support depends on the connection, whether the console is docked, and the game.
What compatibility actually includes
Earbuds have two separate jobs: playing sound and sending microphone input. A set may produce game audio while its microphone is unavailable, routed to the wrong device, or blocked by a game or system setting. Check these independently before deciding that a platform is incompatible.
- Audio output: You can hear the game, menus, and chat.
- Microphone input: The console or computer detects the earbud microphone.
- Voice chat: The game or party service permits chat and is using that microphone.
Connection method matters as much as the earbud itself. A 3.5 mm cable, USB audio device, USB wireless receiver, and Bluetooth connection follow different compatibility rules. A product advertised as Bluetooth-compatible is not automatically suitable for Bluetooth microphone chat on every console.
At-a-glance platform guide
| Platform | Most straightforward connection | What to verify | Main chat limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | 3.5 mm earbuds plugged into the DualSense headset jack | Earbuds must be a compatible headset with microphone wiring; USB support depends on the device | Third-party Bluetooth wireless headsets are not supported directly |
| Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One | 3.5 mm headset plug in the Xbox Wireless Controller | Controller jack size and microphone-compatible plug | Some older Xbox One controllers use a 2.5 mm port and may need an adapter |
| Windows PC | 3.5 mm combo jack, USB audio, or supported Bluetooth | Windows and the game must use the intended playback and microphone devices; microphone permission must be enabled | Bluetooth profiles and device names vary by product |
| Nintendo Switch | 3.5 mm for handheld listening; USB audio for some docked setups | Whether the specific connection and game support microphone chat | The Switch 3.5 mm port does not support a microphone according to Corsair’s compatibility guidance |
Using gaming earbuds on PS5
Connect through the DualSense controller
The simplest wired setup is to insert the earbuds into the 3.5 mm headset jack on the DualSense controller. PlayStation’s PS5 FAQ says the integrated jack accepts a headset, earbuds, or another compatible audio device, and that a wired headset can be used to chat with friends in multiplayer games. This route carries both game sound and, when the earbuds are wired for headset use, microphone input.

- Plug the earbuds fully into the DualSense headset jack.
- Open Settings > Sound > Microphone on the PS5.
- Set Input Device to the controller-connected headset if it is not selected automatically.
- Use Adjust Microphone Level and speak normally to confirm that the input meter responds.
- Under Settings > Sound > Audio Output, check that output is routed to the headset and adjust the controller volume.
If you hear the game but friends cannot hear you, the earbuds may be headphone-only, the plug may not carry microphone wiring, or the PS5 may still be using another input. Check the mute button on the DualSense and the in-game chat channel before replacing the earbuds.
USB and wireless options
PlayStation states that most USB and analog headsets are supported. A USB headset or a model with a PS5-compatible USB receiver can therefore be a practical alternative to the controller jack, but support is model-specific. Confirm that the manufacturer lists PS5 support for the exact connection you intend to use.
Do not plan on pairing ordinary third-party Bluetooth earbuds directly with a PS5. Sony’s FAQ says third-party Bluetooth wireless headsets are not supported. A wireless product must instead use a PS5-compatible USB receiver or another connection explicitly listed by its manufacturer.

Using gaming earbuds on Xbox
Plug into the controller
For Xbox Series X|S and compatible Xbox One controllers, the normal wired path is the controller’s 3.5 mm headset jack. Microsoft’s Xbox Stereo Headset documentation describes this connection for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows devices with a 3.5 mm jack. Earbuds need a headset-style plug with microphone support, not a headphone-only plug.
- Insert the earbuds into the controller’s headset jack.
- Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings > General > Volume & audio output.
- Check headset volume and chat mixer controls.
- Enter a party or the game’s audio settings and verify that your voice indicator reacts when you speak.
Some Xbox One controllers have a 2.5 mm audio port rather than the later 3.5 mm socket. Corsair notes that an adapter may be required when the plug does not fit. Check the physical controller you own instead of assuming every Xbox One pad has the same connector.
Service and account requirements
Xbox’s product information notes that some voice-chat features on supported consoles may require a paid Game Pass tier. The requirement depends on the account and service feature in question, so check the current Xbox rules for the specific multiplayer or chat function you are trying to use. A correctly connected microphone cannot bypass an account-level restriction.

Using gaming earbuds on a Windows PC
Choose the right physical connection
A desktop or laptop may have one combo headset jack or separate headphone and microphone jacks. A single-plug earbud set needs a compatible combo jack; a computer with separate ports may require the appropriate audio/microphone adapter. USB earbuds or a USB audio receiver avoid that analog-port issue, while Bluetooth works only when the computer and earbuds support a suitable audio and microphone profile.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Select playback and microphone devices
- Connect the earbuds or receiver and wait for Windows to finish detecting it.
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, choose the earbuds or their USB audio device.
- Under Input, choose the matching microphone and speak to watch the input meter.
- Open the game or chat application’s audio settings and select the same devices there; many games do not automatically follow a later Windows change.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and allow microphone access for Windows and the game or chat app.
Epic’s PC troubleshooting guidance specifically calls for selecting the intended sound device and granting Fortnite microphone permission. Those checks apply broadly, although individual games label their menus differently.
Why USB device names can be confusing
Some gaming-earbud systems expose separate USB endpoints, such as “Game” for playback and “Chat” for communications. Skullcandy’s PLYR instructions illustrate this arrangement. If Windows or the game selects the chat endpoint for all audio, game sound can become quiet or disappear; if it selects only the game endpoint, the microphone may not be available. Treat these names as product-specific examples rather than universal Windows labels.

Using gaming earbuds on Nintendo Switch
Handheld mode: listening is easier than talking
In handheld mode, plugging analog earbuds into the Switch’s 3.5 mm port is generally the straightforward way to hear game audio. Microphone behavior is different. Corsair’s compatibility article explicitly says the Nintendo Switch 3.5 mm port does not support a microphone. Therefore, earbuds that work perfectly for listening may not provide voice input through that port.
Microphone support can also vary by game. A title may use a separate smartphone-based chat system, restrict chat to a particular accessory, or provide no voice chat at all. Check the game’s own support instructions before treating an analog microphone failure as a hardware defect.

For docked play, a USB headset, USB receiver, or USB-to-3.5 mm adapter can be a useful troubleshooting route. Epic’s Fortnite support recommends those USB options when docked players experience voice-chat problems with a 3.5 mm headset. This is Fortnite-specific guidance, not a guarantee that every Switch game or every Switch model will accept every USB audio device.

Bluetooth on Switch
Bluetooth audio support does not establish that microphone chat will work. The Switch, earbuds, and game must all support the required Bluetooth behavior, and latency or chat availability can differ from wired and USB connections. Use the exact model’s platform matrix rather than relying on a general “Bluetooth” label.

| Connection | Strength | Where it is useful | What can go wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5 mm analog | Simple, wired, and normally low-latency | DualSense and Xbox controller jacks; compatible PC ports; Switch listening | Wrong plug wiring, incompatible jack size, or no Switch microphone support |
| USB cable or USB audio device | Digital audio and a separate microphone path | PC, PS5, and some docked Switch setups | The console or game may not support that exact headset, receiver, or microphone |
| USB wireless receiver | Wireless connection designed for a listed console or computer | PS5, PC, and supported docked-console configurations | Receiver may be platform-specific even when the earbuds also support Bluetooth |
| Bluetooth | Convenient wireless audio on supported devices | Supported PCs and devices that list the exact earbuds | Microphone profiles, latency, and console chat support vary; PS5 does not support third-party Bluetooth headsets directly |
Troubleshoot audio or chat failures
You hear nothing
- Reseat the plug or receiver and confirm that the connector is fully inserted.
- Check the platform’s output device and volume controls.
- On PC, confirm the game did not switch to speakers after the earbuds were connected.
- With USB devices, try another supported port and reconnect before launching the game.
You hear audio, but the microphone is missing
- Confirm that the earbuds include a microphone and use a headset-compatible plug.
- Check the selected input device on the console or in Windows.
- On PS5 and Xbox, inspect the controller mute control and chat mixer.
- On PC, allow microphone access in Windows and in the game or chat application.
- On Switch, remember that the 3.5 mm port’s microphone limitation may be the cause; try a documented USB route for a supported docked game.
The microphone works in the system but not in the game
Open the game’s voice settings, enable chat, and select the intended channel. Fortnite documents one additional conflict: its voice chat will not work while the player remains in Xbox or PlayStation Party Chat. Leave the console party or switch the game’s chat mode before testing again.
Friends hear echo or very low volume
Lower speaker volume, reposition the inline microphone, and check the platform’s microphone-level control. If the issue appears only in one game, compare that game’s input sensitivity and chat-volume settings with the system settings.

What to check before buying earbuds
A claim such as “works with all platforms” is not enough. Ask whether it means audio playback only or full microphone chat, and whether the claim applies to every connection mode. A useful category search is “wired gaming earbuds with microphone and 3.5 mm TRRS headset plug.” Then verify the exact model against this checklist:
- PS5 support through the DualSense jack, USB, or a listed wireless receiver.
- Xbox controller compatibility and the controller’s actual jack size.
- PC support for your computer’s combo or separate ports, USB device, or Bluetooth profile.
- Switch behavior in both handheld and docked modes.
- Whether the microphone works in the games you play, not merely in a system audio test.
- Inline mute and volume controls, fit, isolation, and replaceable tips if those features matter to you.
Manufacturer compatibility tables are more reliable than a retailer headline. If a product page lists several platforms but does not identify the connection used for each one, treat the microphone and chat behavior as unconfirmed until the maker specifies it.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for each platform
- PS5: Compatible wired earbuds work through the DualSense jack for game audio and multiplayer chat. Use a listed USB receiver for wireless; ordinary third-party Bluetooth pairing is not supported.
- Xbox: A microphone-equipped 3.5 mm headset plug in a compatible controller is the normal solution. Check older controllers for a 2.5 mm port and verify any account requirement for the chat feature.
- PC: Nearly any connection can work when the hardware, Windows input/output selection, game settings, and microphone permissions all line up.
- Nintendo Switch: Analog earbuds are suitable for listening, but 3.5 mm microphone support is not available according to Corsair’s guidance. Docked USB solutions can help in supported games such as Fortnite, but no single setup works universally.
