Yes. Several business Wi‑Fi access-point families can provide wireless service without a separate, dedicated controller appliance. The exact experience depends on the product’s operating mode: each AP may be configured independently, one AP may host a virtual controller for a cluster, or the AP may run an autonomous software mode.
Those choices are not interchangeable. Standalone operation can remove coordinated features such as fast roaming, mesh, and centralized updates, while an AP-hosted controller still performs a controller role even though you do not buy separate controller hardware. Check the exact model, hardware revision, firmware, region, and supported mode before deploying.
What “without a controller” actually means
“Controller-free” is an imprecise term. It can mean no dedicated controller hardware, no central management at all, or an AP that contains the controller function. The distinction determines how you configure devices and which features remain available.

Per-AP standalone management
In standalone mode, every access point is configured on its own management page or through the vendor’s mobile app. TP-Link states that Omada EAPs can work independently without an Omada Controller. Each EAP receives an address from the router or gateway, and you configure its wireless network name, security settings, and other options separately. The management interface is local; this mode is not the same as cloud-based fleet management.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Standalone operation is practical when you have only a few APs and can tolerate repeating changes. If you change a password, guest setting, or radio option, you must apply that change to every AP yourself.
Virtual controller hosted by an AP
HPE Aruba Networking Instant Mode uses a different design. One AP in the group acts as the primary virtual controller while also serving clients. Other APs join the cluster, so you get coordinated configuration without buying a dedicated controller appliance. The controller role still exists; it simply runs on an AP. AirWave can provide additional remote, centralized management for that environment. See the Instant Access Points documentation for the architecture.
Autonomous software mode
Cisco documentation for its 800-series wireless devices describes an autonomous mode in which settings are maintained locally on the AP. That contrasts with Unified Wireless mode, which depends on a wireless LAN controller. The cited Cisco material covers older products and software generations, so it should not be treated as proof that every current Cisco AP supports autonomous operation. Verify the current model’s documentation before purchasing.
Architecture comparison
| Architecture | Where configuration lives | Dedicated controller hardware | Coordination across APs | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone APs | Each AP’s local web page or app | No | Manual; settings are not automatically synchronized | Small installations with simple requirements |
| AP-hosted virtual controller | Controller function runs on one AP in the cluster | No | Centralized within the supported cluster | Deployments needing coordinated settings without a controller appliance |
| Autonomous AP mode | Local AP configuration and software | No | Depends on the product; documentation must be checked | Specific legacy or product-specific deployments |
| Dedicated or cloud controller | Controller appliance, software, or vendor service | Sometimes | Centralized management, monitoring, and policy features | Larger or feature-intensive networks |
The table describes management architecture, not radio performance. The available features, licensing, and limits vary by model and firmware.
What you still need for a controller-free AP
Removing a controller does not make an AP a complete network. The AP still needs a wired path to the LAN and a source of power.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Network connectivity: For an Omada EAP in standalone mode, TP-Link says the AP should be connected by Ethernet and obtain a valid IP address from the router or gateway. You then open that address in a browser or discover the AP in the Omada app. Follow the model-specific instructions in the standalone EAP setup guide.
- Power: The required method may be a PoE switch, a PoE injector, or a power adapter. The supplied material does not establish a universal power requirement, so check the selected AP’s specification sheet and installation guide.
- Upstream network services: Your router or firewall still normally supplies DHCP and routes traffic to the internet. A controller is not a substitute for those functions, and eliminating one does not eliminate the need for a gateway.
- Administrative access: You need the AP’s local address, administrator credentials, and a way to reach its management page from the same LAN or an approved management network.
Features that can disappear in standalone mode
Independent configuration is not feature-equivalent to controller management. TP-Link’s standalone limitations guide lists several capabilities that are unavailable when EAPs are configured individually. The guide is the authoritative reference for supported Omada models and firmware; its statement is explicit:
“Omada APs can work independently without an Omada Controller.”
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
The same document qualifies that standalone APs have limited functionality. It identifies these examples as unavailable in standalone configuration:
- Mesh networking
- Fast roaming based on 802.11k/v/r
- AI roaming
- Some captive-portal methods
- Private pre-shared keys (PPSK)
- Access-control lists (ACLs)
- URL filtering
- Scheduled firmware upgrades
That list changes the decision for many offices. If users move between rooms during calls, fast roaming may matter. If an AP cannot be connected by Ethernet, mesh support may be essential. If visitors need a branded sign-in page or employees require per-user wireless keys, the standalone feature set may be insufficient. Confirm the exact limitation for your model rather than assuming every EAP behaves identically.
How many APs can you manage this way?
There is no universal industry cutoff at which a controller becomes mandatory. TP-Link recommends standalone operation for a small number of EAPs and describes “typically less than three APs” as its guidance for Omada. That is vendor guidance for that product family, not a rule that applies to every business AP.

The practical limit is determined by coordination work rather than a magic device count. With two APs, duplicating an SSID and password may be manageable. With several APs, every change must be repeated and verified, increasing the chance of mismatched security, channel, VLAN, or guest settings. A controller or AP-hosted cluster becomes more valuable when you need consistent policy, centralized status, backups, or coordinated firmware updates.

Setting up an Omada EAP in standalone mode
TP-Link documents both app and browser setup. The labels can vary by hardware revision and firmware, but the workflow is:
- Connect the AP by Ethernet. Attach it to the LAN through the appropriate switch, injector, or adapter, and power it according to the model’s instructions.
- Provide an IP address. Ensure the router or gateway is running DHCP, or assign the static address required by your network design. The AP must have a valid address before you can manage it.
- Discover the AP. Use the Omada app or locate the address in the router’s DHCP-client list, then open the AP’s local management page in a browser.
- Run the initial setup. Set the administrator credentials, wireless network name (SSID), security method, and Wi‑Fi password. Use a security mode supported by both the AP and your client devices.
- Apply network-specific settings. Configure management addressing, VLAN or guest options that the standalone firmware exposes, radio channels, transmit power, and time settings. Avoid assuming that a setting available in controller mode is present here.
- Repeat for every AP. Configure each unit separately, using identical SSID and security values if you want clients to see one network. Because there is no central synchronization, verify each AP rather than assuming the first configuration propagated.
- Test from several locations. Walk between coverage areas, confirm that clients obtain addresses, test guest isolation or VLAN behavior if used, and check that the intended APs are reachable for future administration.
An AP that is currently adopted by a controller will not expose the normal standalone page. TP-Link says to forget the AP in the controller or reset it before returning it to standalone mode. A reset erases the existing configuration, so record the required settings and plan an outage before using that option.
When an AP-hosted virtual controller is the better choice
An AP-hosted cluster is useful when you want one configuration interface but do not want a separate controller appliance. The primary AP holds the virtual controller role, and the other APs join it. This can provide coordinated SSIDs, policies, and upgrades within the product’s documented limits.
Plan for the controller AP’s failure behavior. Ask the vendor what happens if the primary unit is powered off, replaced, or loses connectivity, and how another AP is promoted. Also check whether the cluster requires a particular firmware family, whether all hardware revisions can join, and whether remote management needs an additional service.

Do not confuse HPE Aruba Networking Instant Mode with HPE Aruba Networking Instant On. The Instant On operating-modes guide describes an app- and web-oriented setup with internet access, firewall-port, and onboarding prerequisites. That is a separate product family and management model from the AP-hosted virtual-controller architecture described for Instant Mode.

Configuration consistency
Standalone APs are easy to start but easy to drift. A typo in one SSID, VLAN, or encryption setting can leave clients with inconsistent behavior. Maintain a written configuration record and use a repeatable checklist for every unit.
Monitoring and troubleshooting
Without a central dashboard, you inspect APs one at a time. Client counts, signal information, event logs, and alarms may be split across separate interfaces. Decide how you will identify a failed AP, preserve logs, and document which switch port feeds each device.
Backups and recovery
Export configuration files when the firmware supports it, store them securely, and record the AP’s hardware revision. A replacement unit may require a different image or may not accept a backup from another revision. Reset procedures can remove the only copy of a working configuration if you have not documented it.
Firmware maintenance
Controller mode can coordinate upgrades; TP-Link lists scheduled upgrades among the features unavailable in standalone configuration. In a standalone deployment, schedule maintenance manually, upgrade one AP at a time where possible, and verify client connectivity after each change.

Internet dependence
Local standalone management can continue on the LAN without a vendor cloud service, while some app-oriented products require internet access for onboarding or management functions. Determine whether your chosen mode needs outbound firewall access and whether you can administer it during an internet outage.
Common pitfalls and fixes
The AP cannot be found
Confirm link lights, PoE or adapter power, switch-port configuration, and the DHCP lease. A management VLAN or firewall rule may prevent your computer from reaching the AP even though clients can use it.
The AP was previously controller-managed
It may still be adopted and therefore hide standalone controls. Remove it from the controller, or perform the documented reset and repeat initial setup. Expect the reset to erase settings.

Identical SSIDs do not create controller-grade roaming. In standalone mode, clients make the roaming decision and the APs may lack 802.11k/v/r coordination. Recheck whether your model supports those functions outside controller mode; TP-Link lists fast roaming and AI roaming as unavailable in standalone configuration.
A feature shown in a guide is missing
Check the exact model number, hardware revision, region, and firmware branch. Product families can share a name while exposing different management modes. Use the vendor’s current documentation rather than relying on a guide for another AP.
A decision checklist
- Do you need more than a few APs, or can you manage each one separately?
- Are mesh, fast roaming, guest portals, PPSK, ACLs, URL filtering, or scheduled upgrades requirements?
- Will every AP have Ethernet and an approved power source?
- Can your staff maintain a configuration record and perform manual firmware updates?
- Does the product offer an AP-hosted cluster, and what happens if the primary AP fails?
- Does setup require internet access, specific firewall ports, or a vendor service?
- Are the model, hardware revision, firmware, and regional documentation aligned with your planned deployment?
Bottom line
Business-grade Wi‑Fi does not automatically require a separate network controller. Supported APs can run independently, form a cluster with an AP-hosted virtual controller, or use a product-specific autonomous mode. The trade-off is management and feature depth: standalone APs suit small, simple networks, while coordinated roaming, mesh, policy control, monitoring, and scheduled maintenance usually justify a controller or controller-like architecture. Choose by documented operating mode and required features, not by the word “business” on the box.
