Yes. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones work with an iPhone and other Bluetooth-enabled Apple devices. You can pair them with the Bose app, which Bose recommends, or directly from the device’s Bluetooth settings. They can maintain active connections with up to two devices, but audio plays from only one source at a time.
What works with an iPhone
An iPhone can connect to Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones over Bluetooth for wireless audio. Bose documents two supported setup routes: the Bose app and the iPhone’s built-in Bluetooth controls. The Bose app is available through the Apple App Store and is Bose’s recommended way to complete pairing, but installing the app is not required for the basic Bluetooth connection.
The same principle applies to an iPad or Mac with Bluetooth. The headphones do not require a special Apple-only accessory or a wired connection for ordinary listening. However, Bose’s documentation describes Bluetooth multipoint rather than account-level Apple ecosystem handoff. In practical terms, an iPhone, iPad or Mac can be connected within the headphones’ two-device limit, but you should not expect automatic switching simply because all devices use the same Apple account.

- Install the Bose app from the Apple App Store.
- Turn on the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones.
- Open the app and follow its instructions to add or pair the headphones.
- When the app asks, place the headphones in pairing mode by holding the power/Bluetooth control at the Bluetooth position until the Bluetooth indicator flashes blue or the voice prompt announces pairing mode.
- Select the headphones when they appear in the app and complete the on-screen steps.
The app is also the place Bose identifies for managing multipoint, including turning the feature off if you do not want the headphones maintaining two active connections.
Pair directly from iPhone Bluetooth settings
You can complete the connection without the Bose app.
- Open Settings on the iPhone and choose Bluetooth.
- Turn Bluetooth on if it is off.
- Turn on the headphones.
- Hold the power/Bluetooth control at the Bluetooth position until the Bluetooth indicator flashes blue or the voice prompt indicates pairing mode.
- Under the list of available devices, select the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones.
- Wait for the iPhone to show the headphones as connected, then play audio to test the link.
Bose explicitly recommends its app but also says the device’s Bluetooth settings can be used to complete pairing. Therefore, declining to install the app does not prevent iPhone compatibility.
Connect an iPad or Mac as a second device
The first- and second-generation owner’s guides describe multipoint connections to up to two devices at once. A typical arrangement is an iPhone plus an iPad, or an iPhone plus a Mac. Pair the second Apple device using its own Bluetooth settings or the Bose app while the first device is already connected.

“Connected” does not mean that both devices can send sound simultaneously. Bose states that the headphones can play audio from only one device at a time. The second connection stays available so you can move between sources without pairing from scratch.
How switching between two Apple devices works
Switching is a manual audio-stream change, not Apple-style automatic handoff.
- Pause audio on the device that is currently playing.
- Open the second device and start playback there.
- The headphones switch the active audio stream to the second connected device.
For example, pause a podcast on the iPhone before starting a video on the iPad. If the first source continues playing or an app keeps an audio session active, the headphones may remain focused on that source until it is paused.

First generation versus second generation
Bose announced QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) on September 10, 2025. Generation matters when you are checking Bluetooth and codec specifications; do not assume that a specification listed for the second generation applies to the original model.
| Feature | QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (1st Gen) | QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone pairing | Supported through the Bose app or the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings, according to Bose’s product information. | Supported through the Bose app or the device’s Bluetooth settings, according to Bose’s product information. |
| Multipoint | Up to two active device connections; one audio source at a time. | Up to two active device connections; one audio source at a time. |
| Bluetooth specification | Not stated in the cited Bose material. | Bluetooth Core 5.4. |
| Codecs listed by Bose | The cited material does not establish a complete codec list. | SBC, AAC and aptX Adaptive. |
| Apple-specific automatic handoff | Not claimed by Bose’s cited guides. | Not claimed by Bose’s cited guides. |
The two generations share the important iPhone-use behavior documented in the owner’s guides: two devices may remain connected, while only one device supplies audio at a time.
What the codec information means for iPhone users
For second-generation headphones, Bose lists SBC and AAC alongside aptX Adaptive. AAC is the codec commonly relevant to Apple Bluetooth audio, while SBC is a broadly supported fallback. Bose ties the special aptX Adaptive behavior to Snapdragon Sound-certified devices, and its support information discusses that capability in the context of compatible Android devices.
Do not buy or configure the headphones on the assumption that an iPhone will provide aptX Adaptive or Snapdragon Sound benefits. The available Bose material does not promise that behavior for iPhone, iPad or Mac. It also does not provide a complete Apple codec matrix, so the safe conclusion is simply that Bluetooth audio pairing works; the exact codec selected is not established here.

Apple operating-system requirements
Bose’s publicly described pairing information does not state a minimum iOS, iPadOS or macOS version for QuietComfort Ultra Headphones. Do not rely on an invented version number. If your Apple device can use its Bluetooth settings and the headphones enter pairing mode, follow the normal pairing process; consult Bose or Apple support if a specific operating-system compatibility question remains unresolved.
The absence of a published minimum in this material does not mean every historical Apple device is guaranteed to work. It means that Bose’s cited documentation does not establish a precise cutoff that can be quoted responsibly.

Confirm pairing mode
The headphones must be actively discoverable. Turn them on and hold the power/Bluetooth control at the Bluetooth position until the Bluetooth indicator flashes blue or the voice prompt says they are in pairing mode. Merely powering them on is not the same as placing them in pairing mode.

Check which device is using the connection
When two devices are connected, only one can play audio. Pause playback on the first device before starting it on the second. This is especially important when an iPhone is playing quietly in the background while you are testing an iPad or Mac.
Review multipoint settings
If the headphones keep reconnecting to an unexpected device, open the Bose app and check multipoint. You can manage the feature or turn it off, then maintain a single active device connection while troubleshooting.
Common expectations that do not match Bose’s documentation
- Automatic Apple handoff: Bose documents Bluetooth multipoint and manual stream switching, not automatic handoff across an Apple account or the entire Apple ecosystem.
- Simultaneous playback: Two devices may be connected, but audio comes from one device at a time.
- Required app installation: Bose recommends the app, but the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings can complete pairing without it.
- Guaranteed aptX Adaptive on iPhone: Second-generation specifications list aptX Adaptive, yet Bose ties its Snapdragon Sound behavior to certified devices and discusses compatible Android hardware. Treat it as a compatibility-dependent feature, not an iPhone promise.
- One codec list for both generations: The first and second generations have different specifications. Identify the generation before applying codec or Bluetooth claims.
Which setup should you choose?
| Your situation | Best route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want Bose’s guided setup and connection controls. | Bose app | Bose recommends this route, and the app can manage multipoint. |
| You want the quickest connection without installing an app. | iPhone Bluetooth settings | Bose says the device’s Bluetooth settings can complete pairing. |
| You regularly move between an iPhone and iPad or Mac. | Enable multipoint | Up to two devices can remain connected, with manual audio switching. |
| You want only one predictable source. | Turn multipoint off in the Bose app | The app provides the documented control for disabling the two-device behavior. |
| You are evaluating second-generation codec claims. | Check the source device’s compatibility | aptX Adaptive and Snapdragon Sound are not established as iPhone features. |
Bottom line for iPhone and Apple-device owners
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones are compatible with an iPhone and other Bluetooth-enabled Apple devices. Pair through the Bose app or through Settings > Bluetooth; the app is recommended but optional. The headphones can stay connected to up to two devices, yet switching requires pausing the current source and starting playback on the other. That is Bluetooth multipoint, not automatic Apple ecosystem handoff. For second-generation models, Bluetooth 5.4, SBC, AAC and aptX Adaptive are listed, but aptX Adaptive’s Snapdragon Sound behavior should not be presented as an iPhone capability.
