Usually, yes—but not literally any router and modem. A Wi-Fi router can generally connect to a modem or other access device over Ethernet if the router has an Internet/WAN port and the access device is compatible with your ISP and service. If your modem is also a gateway with built-in routing, you may need to adjust its settings to avoid network conflicts.

Why a router and modem can work together

They perform different jobs. A modem or other access device converts the incoming service connection—such as cable, fiber, or another connection type—into Ethernet. The router then uses that Ethernet connection to provide a local network and Wi-Fi. Google explains this division of roles in its modem guidance.

That means the router does not usually need to match the modem’s brand. But a working Ethernet connection alone does not establish that the upstream device is approved for your ISP or suitable for your service.

What must be compatible

The access device and your ISP

First identify what brings service into your home. Depending on the connection, it could be a cable modem, a fiber ONT or Fiber Jack, a satellite terminal, or Ethernet provided by a building. A router by itself generally cannot replace that access device. NETGEAR’s compatibility guidance notes that the modem, ONT, Fiber Jack, or terminal must be compatible with the ISP: check its device-compatibility guidance, then confirm your exact model, location, and service plan against your provider’s current requirements.

The router’s WAN connection

The usual arrangement requires Ethernet from the access device and an Ethernet Internet/WAN port on the router. The port may be labeled “Internet” or “WAN.” NETGEAR’s router setup instructions use this connection pattern. Check that the router has the appropriate port and that its capabilities suit your subscribed service.

Performance expectations

Compatibility and speed are separate questions. A router may connect successfully yet fail to deliver the performance you expect because of the internet plan, device capabilities, or wireless coverage and capacity in your home. Wi-Fi branding alone does not establish the speed a particular modem-and-router combination will provide. The setup guidance cited here does not include controlled speed tests or model-by-model performance comparisons.

Connect a router to a standalone modem

  1. Check the service first. Confirm that the modem is approved for your ISP, location, and plan.
  2. Connect Ethernet. Run an Ethernet cable from the modem to the router’s Internet/WAN port.
  3. Complete router setup. Follow the setup process for your router and confirm that it receives an internet connection.

Use a router with a modem-router gateway

A gateway combines modem and router functions. You can add a separate router, but decide which device should manage the network. The settings available and the exact steps vary by ISP and gateway, so use the instructions for your specific equipment rather than assuming a universal menu path.

Bridge mode on the gateway

When available, bridge mode makes the gateway act as the connection to the ISP while the new router handles routing. NETGEAR recommends pairing gateway bridge mode with router mode on the added router as a setup option. Check your gateway or ISP instructions for whether bridge mode is supported and how to enable it.

Access point mode on the added router

If bridge mode is unavailable or you want the gateway to remain the router, putting the added device in AP (access point) mode is an alternative described in NETGEAR’s setup guidance. Some router features are disabled in AP mode, so check the device documentation before choosing it. Google also notes that a separate router can be used with a combination modem-router, though settings may need adjustment; see its guidance on modems and combination devices.

Why two routers can cause trouble

If the gateway continues routing and the added router also operates in router mode, the network can end up with double NAT. That can complicate some connections and services. Bridge mode or AP mode can address the issue, depending on your equipment and which features you need. The exact remedy is device-dependent; see NETGEAR’s double-NAT explanation and your gateway’s instructions.

Check these details before buying or changing settings

  • Service type: Is your connection cable, fiber, satellite, or building-provided Ethernet?
  • Upstream device: Do you have a modem, gateway, ONT/Fiber Jack, satellite terminal, or wall Ethernet?
  • ISP approval: Is the exact access-device model supported for your location and plan?
  • Ports: Does the access device provide Ethernet, and does the router have an appropriate Internet/WAN port?
  • Gateway configuration: If you are adding a router to a gateway, can the gateway use bridge mode? If not, does the new router offer AP mode, and which features would that disable?
  • Expected performance: Compare your internet plan and device capabilities, then consider Wi-Fi coverage and capacity for your home. A successful connection does not guarantee a particular speed.
  • Total cost: Account for any ISP equipment fee if you are considering replacing provider-supplied equipment.
