No. Compatibility depends on what your washer calls an automatic dispenser. A conventional drawer meters detergent for one cycle and may accept liquid or powder with the correct insert. A bulk auto-dose tank stores detergent for several loads and can restrict you to a particular formula, such as HE liquid. Pods and sheets generally go in the drum or basket, not a normal liquid reservoir. Check the exact washer manual, detergent concentration and compartment markings before filling anything.
First identify which kind of dispenser you have
The word “automatic” is used for two different designs. The distinction determines whether a detergent is compatible.
Single-load detergent drawer
A conventional drawer has compartments that release a measured amount during the selected cycle. You add detergent for that one load, usually in a compartment marked for the main wash. Some drawers can handle either HE liquid or HE powder, but the liquid cup, insert or selector may need to be moved or removed. The drawer is not automatically compatible with every product simply because it is removable.
Bulk auto-dose tank or cartridge
A bulk system holds detergent in a reservoir and meters it over multiple cycles. Its pump and sensors are designed around particular viscosity and concentration ranges. Whirlpool’s Load & Go guidance, for example, says to use only HE high-efficiency liquid detergent in the cited cartridge. LG’s ezDispense guidance allows liquid detergent but excludes powdered, ultra-concentrated and gel-type formulas. A product that works in a single-load drawer can therefore be unsuitable for a bulk tank.

Special pod compartment
A few washers have a compartment specifically designed for single-dose packets. Unless your model expressly provides one, treat a pod or sheet as a drum/basket product rather than a drawer product.

What the major manufacturer instructions actually allow
GE: configure the drawer for liquid or powder
GE’s HE Detergent guidance says to keep the detergent box and insert in place for liquid detergent. For powder, remove both as the instructions describe. The same page says pods and sheets may be used, but they should be put in the basket before the clothes unless the washer has a dispenser designed for them. GE also warns that excessive detergent can create excess suds and residue, and says homemade detergent has not been tested and is not recommended for HE washers.

LG: remove the liquid cup for powder in a drawer
LG’s Detergent and Additive Usage instructions (December 15, 2025) describe HE liquid and powder use in a conventional drawer. Powder requires removing the liquid cup or insert as shown for the particular drawer. LG says a pod belongs in the drum, not in the drawer. The required dose still depends on the detergent label, soil level, load size and the washer’s own limits.
LG ezDispense: liquid-only restrictions are narrower than a drawer’s
LG’s How to Use the Automatic Dispenser article, published by LG USA Support on October 29, 2025, states: “Do not add powdered detergent, ultra-concentrated detergent, or gel-type detergent/fabric softener to the dispenser tanks.” Use the tank’s dosage setting and the level marks rather than filling by guesswork. If the model offers a manual-dispense option, follow the model-specific procedure instead of pouring an excluded formula into the tank.
Whirlpool Load & Go: use HE liquid in the cartridge
Whirlpool’s Load & Go cartridge guidance says: “Use only HE High-Efficiency liquid detergents.” When bulk dispensing is active, Whirlpool directs powder and single-dose packets to the basket rather than the cartridge. The guidance also says to rinse the cartridge when changing detergents or when the washer will be unused for an extended period.

Why “HE” is important, but not the whole answer
High-efficiency washers use less water than many older machines. HE detergent is formulated to produce fewer suds, allowing the washer to tumble, drain and rinse properly. A non-HE or excessive dose can leave foam and residue, interfere with rinsing and, in the covered Whirlpool guidance, contribute to leaking or draining problems. Use the HE designation when the washer requires it, but do not treat that label as a universal approval for every dispenser.

Two bottles can both say HE liquid while requiring different milliliter doses. A bulk pump calibrated for a standard liquid may over-deliver an ultra-concentrated formula, while a thick gel may not flow through the pump correctly. Use the washer’s dose setting and the detergent maker’s instructions together, and never exceed the reservoir’s maximum line.
How to check your washer before adding detergent
- Find the model number. Look on the door frame, lid area, rear label or the washer’s settings screen. Do not rely on the product family name alone; a similar-looking model can use a different insert or cartridge.
- Open the current owner’s manual or manufacturer help page. Search the model number plus “detergent,” “dispenser,” “Load & Go,” “ezDispense” or “pod.” Use the instructions for your region and model revision.
- Classify the compartment. Decide whether you have a one-load drawer, a refillable bulk tank/cartridge or a dedicated pod slot. A removable drawer is not automatically a bulk system.
- Match form and concentration. Confirm whether the compartment accepts HE liquid, HE powder, a packet or another formula. Check exclusions such as “no powder,” “no gel” or “no ultra-concentrated detergent.”
- Set the insert or selector. For a conventional drawer, install or remove the liquid cup exactly as illustrated. Leaving a liquid insert in place while adding powder can block the flow path or cause incomplete dispensing.
- Set the dose conservatively. Use the washer’s dose level, load-size setting and detergent label. Fill only to the marked line; do not top off above it.
- Place packets correctly. Put a pod or sheet in the empty drum or basket before adding clothing when the manual directs that method. Do not drop it into a liquid reservoir.
- Record what is in a bulk tank. If more than one person operates the washer, label the tank with the detergent type and concentration so an incompatible product is not added later.
What to do when changing detergent in a bulk tank
Do not simply pour a new formula on top of the old one. Residual detergent can alter the concentration, thicken in the pump path or create unexpected suds. Follow the model’s cleaning procedure. For the cited Load & Go cartridge, Whirlpool instructs users to rinse the cartridge when changing detergents and after a long period without use. Reinstall it securely, prime or run the required maintenance cycle if the manual specifies one, and then fill with the approved formula only.

If your washer has separate tanks for detergent and fabric softener, verify the labels before filling. A detergent tank and softener tank can have different viscosity limits, and the LG ezDispense warning applies to detergent and fabric-softener products placed in those tanks.

Powder was poured into a liquid-only reservoir
Stop using automatic dosing, remove the reservoir if the manual permits, and clean or rinse it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not force clumps through the pump. Until the tank is clean and the manual confirms the product is allowed, measure an approved detergent manually in the correct compartment.
A pod was placed in the drawer
Remove it before starting the cycle if it is still accessible. For the next load, place the packet in the drum or basket as directed. A pod can fail to dissolve properly when trapped in a drawer’s small water channel, leaving detergent residue or an under-dosed wash.

The washer produces heavy suds
Check whether the detergent is HE, whether the dose exceeds the label or machine setting, and whether detergent was added in more than one place. Run the washer’s recommended rinse or suds-reduction procedure. Repeated suds problems require the exact model’s troubleshooting instructions rather than simply switching to a stronger fragrance or adding more water.
Detergent remains in the drawer
Confirm that the liquid cup or powder insert is in the position shown in the manual. Inspect the drawer and inlet for buildup, make sure the water supply is fully open, and avoid filling above the marked line. If the drawer is configured correctly but still fails to flush, use the washer’s cleaning instructions or arrange service.
The tank was filled with an ultra-concentrated liquid
Do not assume that “liquid” means acceptable. LG specifically excludes ultra-concentrated formulas from ezDispense. Empty and rinse the tank as directed, then use a listed formula or switch to manual dosing if the model supports it.

Pods and sheets are single-dose products, not liquids that a pump can meter. GE and LG place them in the basket or drum, and Whirlpool gives the same direction for packets when Load & Go is active. A special pod compartment is the exception, but its existence must be stated in the model manual.
Homemade detergent has a separate compatibility problem. GE says its homemade formulations have not been tested and are not recommended for HE washers. Ingredients can vary in sudsing, alkalinity, dissolution and residue, so a recipe that appears to work in a bucket is not evidence that it is safe for a washer pump or automatic dispenser.
A simple decision rule
- If it is a conventional drawer: liquid or powder may be possible, but configure the insert exactly as the manual shows.
- If it is a bulk tank or cartridge: use only the detergent forms and concentrations explicitly listed for that tank.
- If it is a pod or sheet: use the drum, basket or dedicated pod compartment specified by the model.
- If the label or manual is silent: do not guess. Measure an approved detergent manually or contact the manufacturer with the model number.
The safe answer is therefore not “any detergent.” It is the detergent form, concentration and dose that your exact dispenser was designed to handle.
